Meredith Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Wendy Hanna-Rose Interim Department Head, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School ii Abstract Herpesviruses are widespread in the nature infecting almost every animal species. They are significant pathogens for human health and agriculture. Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) causes millions of chronic infections in humans, whereas Marek’s disease virus 1 (MDV-1) is a herpesvirus of poultry of great economic importance. Clinical outcomes of HSV-1 infections are diverse, ranging from surface lesions, keratitis, to severe and potentially lethal encephalitis. Similarly, MDV-1 causes nervous system disease and lymphomas in chickens with mortality approaching 100% in absence of vaccination. Both HSV-1 and MDV-1 are alphaherpesviruses and contain a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) genome as their genetic material. Using high throughput sequencing (HTS) and comparative genomics, this dissertation seeks to explore the genetic basis of transmission, spread and virulence of these viruses.

  • 2018 Canoe Sprint & Marathon Handbook
£6 2018 Canoe Sprint & Marathon Handbook NEW for 2018 - Racing Coach Award At the start of 2014, the British Canoeing Coaching Strategy Group initiated a review of our qualifications. This resulted in proposals to revise the structure, with a phased approach to the development (and implementation) of the various components. The first phase focused on the Club Activity Assistant, piloted at the start of 2016. This was followed by developments within the Leadership strand, including a new Paddlesport Leader Award, rebranding of the 4 and 5 Star awards, and the introduction of a Guide scheme; all launched April 2017. This next phase focuses on the development of the qualifications previously pitched at UKCC Level 2. The development is, in the main, focused on a restructuring and creating discipline specific pathways available across all disciplines. This will significantly change the prerequisites and the pathway through taught and assessed elements. Direct entry to the Racing Coach Award, removal of the portfolio and specific deliverers. The ‘Coach Awards’ will supersede the current Level 2, Moderate/Advanced Water Endorsements, and Discipline Support Modules. The qualifications are designed for people whose core function is to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve paddlesport skills within the discipline chosen. This will include coaching beginners new to the sport, or paddlers looking to develop their skills in the given discipline/environment. CONTENTS Sprint and Marathon Racing Calendar 2-5 Useful Addresses 6-8 Paddle-Ability 9 Paddlesafe
