    Outlaws and Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ‘70s Capsule Bios of Pivotal Artists Kris Kristofferson—Along with Tom T. Hall, John Hartford, and Mickey Newbury, Kristofferson elevated the language of country music in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Equally inspired by two key Williams — William Blake and Hank Williams — he was integral in merging the street-level counter-culture with the mainstream. He wrote country classics including “”For the Good Times” and “Sunday Morning Coming Down” as well as Janis Joplin’s rib-rattling rock statement, “Me and Bobby McGee.” He also sang progressive anthems including “Jesus Was a Capricorn.” Willie Nelson — Nelson struggled in the 1960s as he sought to match his songwriting success (“Hello, Walls,” “Crazy”) with progress as an entertainer. Depressed by his inability to do this, he lit out for his native Texas in 1971 and emerged as a uniter of rednecks, hippies, and freaks. In Texas, he found a flowering culture that embraced artistry and eschewed cultural labels. He became, and remains, a Buddha-like figure who is loved and revered by people of varying political and musical perspectives. Waylon Jennings — “It’s the same old tune: fiddle and guitar/ Where do we take it from here?” Waylon sang, in a song that answered those very same questions. Jennings, a Texas native, came to Nashville in the 1960s and was dissatisfied by a glossy “Nashville Sound” that he said fit him “like syrup on sugar.” He fought and won creative freedom and recorded some of the greatest and most distinctive songs in country music history.

Het is namelijk geen verzameling oude countryhits van Jim Lauderdale, maar een gloednieuw afgeleverd werkstuk dat, in samenwerking met de mij onbekende Odie Blackmon, werd gemaakt. Beiden schreven - op één na – de liedjes en deden de productie. In Amerika zal dit album waarschijnlijk hoge ogen gooien bij publiek en pers, hier te lande zal alleen de verstokte liefhebber van ouderwetse country & western, in een enigszins vernieuwde outfit, even opkijken. Dus vermoed ik dat deze bespreking tegen vele dovenmansoren zal zijn gericht. Dat valt wat mij betreft goed te snappen, omdat luisteren naar driekwartier Honky Tonk immers een tamelijk zelfkastijdend tijdverdrijf is. Daar kan het uitnodigende openingsnummer van deze cd Honky Tonk Mood Again, het grote koor aan muzikanten en de heldere productie niet veel aan verhelpen. Ook al zijn er een paar nummers met een lichte folk- en bluesinvloed, het blijft té country & western. Waarmee ik het traditionele countrygenre in het algemeen en deze cd in het bijzondere niet wil diskwalificeren. Hooguit valt er wat aan te merken op de smaak van ondergetekende. Maar ja, daarover valt in wezen altijd te twisten.     Javier Campos Calvo-Sotelo Apocalypse as Critical Dystopia in Modern Popular Music ABSTRACT The last book of the New Testament has inspired countless narratives and cultural pro- ductions. In the realm of popular music, the Apocalypse has been embraced as syn- onymous with imminent catastrophe, generating a dystopian discourse. As a tool for analysis, the concept of “critical dystopia” has built a useful means of connecting apoc- alyptic menaces, re-enchantment of the world, and social protest. At the same time, “authenticity” is a sacred dimension within rock, an antidote to commercialism and a key notion of doomsday scenarios. This article has two parts: first, a conceptual review of the state of the questions and debate involved; and second, an exposition of selected songs, followed by a summary of their main traits.
