    SEMAPHORE February 2019 The LIST meeting will be held on Friday, February 15th, 8pm at the Historic Van Bourgondien House in West Babylon. This house is located at 600 Albin Avenue in West Babylon. The LIRR West Babylon Team Yard is located approximately 1/4 mile NW from the house also on Albin Avenue. Immediately adjacent to the house are soccer fields with a large parking lot for our use. Parking is also on site at the rear of the house down a long drivway. Albin Avenue is just off Arnold Avenue. Arnold Avenue begins at Route 109 on the north, just south of Sunrise Highway and on the south end it is off Great East Neck Road.     Breaking Through How smart partnerships overcame decades of resistance to modernize America’s busiest commuter railroad By Elizabeth Moore By Elizabeth Moore March 11, 2019 Breaking Through: How smart partnerships overcame decades of resistance to modernize America’s busiest commuter railroad Dear Reader, t is with great pleasure and pride that the Rauch Foundation has under- written this excellent case study by Elizabeth Moore that tells the long and complicated story of how the 3rd Track on the Long Island Rail Road finally came to be. This is a story that we hope will resonate with many other leaders around the country, as it reveals how a sustained, cross- I sector effort with business, philanthropy, education and research institu- tions, labor and numerous nonprofit organizations were combined with the power, leadership and determination of New York State’s governor Andrew Cuomo, to bring to fruition a project that was widely considered impossible. There were definitely substantial individual contributions: • New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who exercised the full range of his powers to make this happen, including and importantly listening to the concerns of the villages most impacted by the project. • Kevin Law, the President of Long Island’s major business group the Long Island Association and David Kapell, former mayor of Greenport and currently consultant to the Rauch Foundation, were a formidable team for developing strategy and orga- nizing the on-the-ground work as well as providing day-to-day leadership. • The Long Island Index Advisory Committee who provided wise counsel for more than 15 years. • Our researchers: Ann Golob, Director of the LI Index project for over 12 years, for her leadership, creativity and quality control over the entire Index project; and our researchers the Regional Plan Association and HR&A Advisors, who compiled strong, substantive reports.

Steamboats traveled between coastal cities, but were more limited in their routes than stagecoaches and averaged the same amount of travel time. Desire for faster travel times, specifically between New York City and Boston, accelerated technological advancements that led to the development of a fledgling railroad network in New England by the second quarter of the nineteenth century.

    Descriptive Notes Descriptive Notes Winter 2003 The Newsletter of the Description Section of Winter the Society of American Archivists 2003 From the Chair Chris Prom Maynard Brichford, a former president of SAA (and retired archivist at my institution), once commented that archivists tend to regard every inventory as preliminary. Likewise, descriptive standards — and the work of the Description Section — are always a work in progress. At the heart of this evolution lies the work undertaken by SAA, its staff and, in particular, the members of the Description Section. I was recently reminded of SAA’s fundamental role in this process while contemplating an oversight on my part, the fact that I have not yet ordered my copy of SAA's reissued edition of Muller, Feith, and Fruin's Manual for the Arrangement and Description of Archives. (In spite of procrastinating, I will have ordered it by the time you read this.) We rely on SAA to provide us the tools we need to do our jobs, whether they are classic texts or new tools. But we cannot afford to take a passive role in SAA. As members of a voluntary professional organization, we must get involved. We must use SAA to build on the foundations of descriptive theory and practice laid down in our seminal descriptive standards. After all, these standards — MARC-AMC, APPM, and EAD — were themselves developed largely through work undertaken in SAA. Today, we must actively participate in the Description Section and associated bodies like the EAD Working Group, the EAD Round Table or SAA committees. Volunteers in these bodies and elsewhere develop and make available the tools which pay dividends in our day-to-day work.

Our aim is to place the Island's record within the framework of history, reflecting as well as contributing to the principal phases of national life. By “Long Island” we mean its four components - Nassau, Brooklyn, Suffolk, and Queens; our concept of “national life” traverses the great chain of experience from pre-colonial times to the present. As we are proud to be sponsored by the State University of New York at Stony Brook, so are we pleased that our Boards comprise a cross section of academic and cultural centers. We hope to serve as a magnet, attracting original studies by known or first- time writers who meet our standards of scholarship, style, and substance. Most issues will offer interpretive studies of varied topics and periods. Occasionally our focus will be on a single crucial concept, as in the Fall of 1989 we examine Long Island as Island - the Sound, Bay, and bridges, the whalers and fishers, the shipbuilders, traders, and mariners. We set to work with no preconceptions, no plan to gloss or glorify.
