Well the RSC has put together a fantastic set of resources that explores the science behind some of the most memorable scenes. Helping to engage students by putting a different spin on what they have learnt in class, these four information sheets explore whether the science on the show would work in real life!

STEM /Berkshire will be hosting a Powerful Practicals Session at the University of Reading with the aim of equipping our STEM Ambassadors with the skills to run some off-the-peg activities.

This is a great opportunity for STEM Ambassadors and Teachers to get together to try out four fun activities that can easily be transferred to a classroom as a STEM Enrichment activity.

Science and Technology Day

When: Thursday 23rd October, 9am-3.30pm Where: Wellington College, Crowthorne Details: Students from 11 different schools will be attending a Science and Technology day at Wellington College, engaging in a variety of different activities. One of these activities will be a "What's My Line?" networking event, to run five times over the day. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Please bring a prop from or related to your work to use as a conversation starter. We're also looking for one STEM Ambassador to give an inspirational talk at the end of the day about science or technology. Gold CREST Mentor – NEW!

When: Ongoing Where: Email or visiting the Howard of Effingham School, Effingham Details: The school are seeking a mentor for three of their Year 10 students that have come-up with a concept for an App which can be used as an educational resource for teachers and parents of students with additional educational needs. They presented the concept at the Big Bang heats where the students thoroughly impressed the judging scientist and engineers throughout the day and walked away winning four competition categories: - The Thales South East Young Engineer of the Year - The Eurotherm Prize for Commercial Potential - The NSEC Junior Engineering/ Technology - The Young Engineers for Britain Engineering Excellence Award The students are now wishing to develop a prototype of their app which they would like to present at the Big Bang Finals which will be held at the NEC in Birmingham. The school are looking for an STEM Ambassador with programming skill or knowledge of app design who can assist the students with the creation of their prototype. Ideally it would be someone who could meet the students on a Tuesday evenings between 3pm and 6pmbut this is not essential. Careers Talk

When: 4th, 5th (9.40am-10.40am) or 7th November (2pm-3pm) Where: Baylis Court School, Slough Details: The school would like a female STEM Ambassador who has studied maths at University to speak to year 11’s about why studying maths at a higher level is important. Computing Talk – NEW!

When: Tuesday 11th November, 8.15am – 3.30pm Where: Lynch Hill Enterprise , Slough Details: The school are looking for STEM Ambassadors to come along and give talks to the year 7 students on computing with the focus on one of the following topics: Scratch, Python, Wearable, Greenfoot, or Drone Programming. The event will likely last all day and you are welcome to stay for the whole day, but it is not required. If you are interested in giving a computing talk, please contact us on [email protected] to volunteer.

Careers Convention

When: Wednesday 12th November, 6pm-9pm Where: Reading School, Reading Details: Reading School is to hold its annual Careers Convention on Wednesday 12 November 2014 and I am writing to request your support in advising our students on careers in STEM subjects. The aim of the evening is to give the students, the youngest of whom will be fourteen years of age, together with their parents or guardians, an opportunity to talk informally with people working in different career areas. The Careers Convention will commence at 7.00 pm and will finish at 9.00 pm. Each adviser will have a table and chairs and space can be made available for display stands, which may be set up from 6.00 pm. A light buffet will be available in the Refectory for advisers from 6.00 pm onwards and there will be an informal briefing at 6.45 pm. What’s my line?

When: Tuesday 18th November, 10.50am – 1.30pm Where: Oakwood School, Horley Details: The school will be holding a Careers Speed Networking Session where groups of about 6 students will meet STEM Ambassadors and try to guess their profession. Once they have guessed their career, they would like the STEM Ambassadors to give them information about the job, how to get in and future progression etc… They would like STEM Ambassadors to arrive at school for 10.50am for refreshments and a briefing. The event ends at 1.30pm but guests are welcome to stay for lunch. No preparation required. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please contact [email protected].

Science Challenge – NEW!

When: Monday 24th November, 8.15am – 3.30pm Where: Lynch Hill Enterprise Academy, Slough Details: The school will be running a Science Challenge day for their year 7 students and are looking for STEM Ambassadors to support in the running of the IET Faraday Challenge (http://faraday.theiet.org/stem-activity- days/faraday-challenge-days/). The Science of the Sky

When: Any Tuesday morning in November/December Where: High Close School, Wokingham Details: The theme of next terms cross-curricular lessons is 'Sky'. The school would like STEM Ambassadors to attend a morning lesson to give an engaging workshop/activity focusing on the Science of the Sky. This can be from Space travel to Flight to Meteorology. The lessons run from 9:00am until 12:40pm on Tuesdays but you do not have to be there for the whole morning. ‘First Edition’ STEM Event – NEW!

When: Wednesday 17th December, 8.30am – 1.30pm Where: Upton Court Grammar School, Slough Details: The EDT will be delivering a hands-on STEM activity with the pupils and they would like STEM Ambassadors to assist the pupils with the activity by encouraging them to think outside the box to solve problems and complete the activity on time. Also, they would like the STEM Ambassadors, whilst walking around the different groups, to informally speak with the pupils about their own experiences of STEM both in their industry and the courses that have taken them to their chosen career. Lastly they would like those who volunteer to assist as Competition Judges and in the setting up/tiding away for the event. Chemistry Careers Talk

When: Flexible dates: January 15th, 22nd or 29th 2015, March 5th, 12th or 19th 2015, April 16th , 23rd or 30th 2015 Where: King Edward’s School, Witley Details: The school would like a STEM Ambassador to come into the school for approx. 1hr to give a Careers Talk on what pursuing Chemistry can lead to and the different careers opportunities that are available. Careers Day

When: Tuesday 10th February 2015, 10am-6.30pm Where: Tomlinscote School and Sixth Form College, Camberley Details: The school are holding a Careers Day where they have in excess of 100 Employers, Unis and Colleges that attend. The school would like to extend this to include a ‘STEM Interactive Learning Zone’ and would love to invite STEM Ambassadors to be part of the event and bring some ‘hands on’ items. Preserving British Wildlife

When: Any time between 16th – 25th March 2015 (National Science Week) Where: Ridgeway Primary School, Whitley Details: The Science coordinator at The Ridgeway Primary School is looking to organize a set of activities for National Science Week during the week 16th to 20th March 2015. The theme they are looking to use is Preserving British Wildlife and would like a STEM Ambassador who is interested in local wildlife and conservation to speak to the kids. Working Lunch

When: Flexible date, 1pm-2pm Where: Tomlinscote School and Sixth Form College, Camberley Details: The school would like to provide an opportunity for students to talk to a professional in an informal setting. Genuinely interested students will meet with the guest (a STEM Ambassador) and ask questions regarding their career, qualifications/training needed etc... STEM Club Support

When: Wednesdays, 3.10pm-4pm Where: Oakbank School, Wokingham Details: The school are running a STEM club on Wednesday afternoons and would like inspiration and support for a fantastic bunch of KS3 students.
