President’s Corner Tim Lyons

That's another season done & dusted. As with most seasons, there will be some of us delighted with our performances, some of us a little disappointed and some of us wondering what we were thinking when you pulled on the spikes this year. Whichever category you fell into I hope you'll be back again next season to do it all over again (there is of course another category of those who don't do much because they are getting old and are always injured).

The club has continued to grow with almost 200 senior and 680 junior members. Of course success on the track and in the field has come our way but space doesn't permit individual performances being mentioned. At the recent AGM and Trophy Night, a number of athletes received awards and they are listed elsewhere in this newsletter. I do want to acknowledge the contributions made by our club coaches who provide their time and expertise to large numbers of members. We are indeed fortunate to have their services. Unfortunately we lose the services of longstanding middle distance coach, Dave Leeder, who is moving interstate. Dave has been coaching since he was associated with the old Perry Lakes Little Athletics Centre and has nurtured the development of hundreds of athletes over the years. He will be sorely missed and we wish Dave the best of luck in the future. We are interviewing for replacements!

I also want to thank your Committee for their work over the season. They are responsible for arranging social events, scholarship grants, fundraising and coaching. Sally McCormick has been a terrific club secretary/ uniform officer and I want to thank her for her efforts.

I hope that members will support all fundraising efforts next season. That will include the Corporate Mile Event, which will be held in October 2013. The Club faces a significant financial challenge as from the end of the 2012-13 season. For the first time we are being charged for ground usage. I anticipate this will add at least $5,000 to the Club's expenses over the next 12 months. We will need to find those extra funds if we are to maintain the same level of support for members and coaches. We need to raise more funds, for example, through the sale of clothing. If you don't have one of the white long sleeved polos, then now is the time to buy one. We have the support of the Friends of UWA Athletics who have generously allowed us to retain the revenue from future sales of the fabulous Club history published late last year, "The Fat Man's Odyssey". The committee will organise other events throughout the season designed to relieve you of some cash, so please support those efforts. !

! '! UWA Little Athletics Update By Nadine Talcon

The 2012/13 Summer Season for UWALAC is officially over. On the back of record numbers for summer, the winter Cross Country has also started off with a large crowd of enthusiastic young runners. Our winter training started Monday April 8.

The Zones Championships -heats and quarter finals which enable athletes to qualify for the State Championships were held on the weekend 9/10th March. Perth metropolitan Little Athletic Centres are divided into four Zones. UWALAC is currently in Zone 4 along with Hamersley, Joondalup and Ridgewood. The venue for this 2-day competition was McGillivray Oval. For those not making the States it is a great chance to compete against athletes from other centres. Many UWALAC athletes gave it a go and did really well.

The State Championships were held on March 23/24 at the WA State Athletics Centre.UWALAC athletes did a fantastic job competing in very hot conditions on Sunday February 9 in the Multi's. The forecast 42 degrees saw many athletes pull out from competition. Despite the warm weather many of our athletes set multiple PB's and finished in the top 10 in their age groups. The following UWALAC athletes received medals for their efforts, a fantastic achievement.

17 Boys - Joshua Billington - Silver

16 Boys - Jonathan Tapley - Silver

14 Girls - Ashlee Hardisty - Gold

12 Boys - Austin Aves – Bronze

! )! National Junior Championship Report By Jonas Aranda

The 12th March saw the annual Australian Junior Championships come to Perth. The excitement was evident months prior to competition as athletes aimed for qualification times, distances and heights in order to secure their spots on the team. For such a large scale event to be held on Western Australian home turf was in itself a tremendous advantage to WA athletes, as they could feel comfortable and secure in the stadium, while also having the spectacular support from family, friends and coaches in the grandstand to cheer them on, hence creating an atmosphere like no other.

These championships provide an opportunity for athletes to compete against some of Australia’s finest in their respective age groups, with athletes coming from across Australia and in some cases, as far as New Zealand. For many athletes this was their very first major championships and while it may have been daunting at first, the experience is one to never be forgotten. In an instant that nervous sensation is transformed into a sheer rush of adrenalin, and the sudden realisation of being at a National Championships puts an athlete in a state of euphoria. There were of course many highlights from WA athletes, but like every competition, there were those who came away feeling disappointed. In my opinion, while every effort can be made to ensure a smooth training regime and preparation, there will always be moments of success

! *+! and moments that would rather be forgotten. I think it is important for young athletes to reflect not only on the result, but on the experience of the event and the personal dedication and commitment to training leading up to the competition. No matter what event, I commend all athletes on their performances at the championships and I hope many personal bests were achieved over the six days. I feel that such a prestigious competition can only further motivate WA athletes to want to run, jump and throw at that next level.

Finally, a special mention goes to three of our very own UWA athletes who achieved automatic qualification to the World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine. Amy McCormick blitzed her field in the Under 18 Women’s 2000m steeplechase to win gold in a time of 6:39:58 while Henri Brown and Nina Kennedy soared over the bar to also win gold in their respective pole vault age groups. I wish all these athletes well and I hope the experience is one of great success.

Thanks to all the coaches and officials

! **! My life as an athlete in Rome By Louise Soia

It’s almost a year since I left little old Perth for La dolce vita (the sweet life) to go and live in Rome, Italy. My adventures started with an 8 week, 15 flight, food massacre through , France, Spain, and north of Italy, Portugal and Greece. I then moved into my apartment in the centre of Rome, me and my Italian Flat mate, Anna, who insisted she was not aggressive...hmmmm. The time for some Rome athletics competitions was to begin.... My daily routine, not sure if you would call it a routine, consisted of getting up a leisurely hour hmm maybe 9..930..possibly 10, getting a caf (Macchiato) from my favourite cafe, Panella’s, heading out for a casual run to the coliseum and back, which I can reassure you every time I ran past it was so surreal, especially at night with it all lite up and even more so at 6am when there are no tourists and the sun was still rising, just beautiful! (I would strongly suggest if Barely standing after a cross country you go to Rome make sure you go for a jog in run in the hill of Rome. the morning, Rome is so much more beautiful when the tourists are not out!)

I would then head down to the gym, and after a workout I would head out for some lunch a number of coffees before hitting the track for my training session.

Whilst in Rome I competed in 4 competitions and a number of “cross country” runs, getting a personal best in my 400m of 58.0” and a random competition of 1km in 3.12”. What I loved about competing in Rome, the track was next to the coliseum and circus maximus (the chariot races where held here) and the Italian women, they would bake biscuits every competition and yell Va via (go!!) Luisa!!!!! Even though I hardly knew them. My life as an athlete in Rome was the best experience of my life, the running through the ancient city, A panalini from Panellas, Rome.. drinking coffee endlessly and diving into as mmmm Coffee ! *"! much food as possible. But all this came to an end after 6 and a half months, endless coffee, 39 flights and memories to last me a lifetime, but I will always call Perth home!

For anyone heading to Rome please drop me an email and i can send you through a cheat sheet for Rome, the best restaurants, bars and tourist hot spots!

Rome by night There is even a moisturiser after me..lol

The not so well maintained track in Rome
