Page 4 CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

The past 2012-13 athletic year has again proved very successful for Athletics WA (AWA). The grass roots of the sport has continued to grow and with this growth comes all the associated benefits of greater financial security, improved competition and scope to provide stronger leadership and management.

The leadership and management skills of the CEO of AWA, Wayne Loxley cannot be understated in the growth and development of our sport. Acknowledgement must also be noted of the support Wayne received from his team and all the volunteer officials who can also lay claim to the current success of athletics.

AWA’s registrations continue to grow and although not as significant as the year after AWA’s move to the WA Athletic Stadium still equates to a ten percent growth. This growth of registrations and weekly competitors augurs well for the future of athletics.

AWA hosted the Australian National Junior Championships in March David Van der Walt 2013 and this event proved to be the biggest Junior Championship Chairman ever held in Australia. This event was combined with the ‘Healthway Go for 2 & 5’ Perth Track Classic and highlighted a great evening of athletics. Supporting this event was a field of approximately 175 volunteers from around Australia who contributed to the success of the week of national and international athletics in WA. The Board of AWA acknowledges the support of the State Government through ‘Eventscorp’ in enabling this event to be held in WA. Accompanying the junior athletes at the Championships were many families who had the opportunity to appreciate and enjoy an extraordinary State.

Following this week of athletics AWA hosted the Bankwest Gallipoli Fun Run at Kings Park in April 2013. This event is now becoming a major attraction on the community fun run calendar and again highlights the leadership and management of the AWA team. Special mention must be made of the team at Bankwest whose creativity and generosity to the WA community has enabled the growth and success of this event. AWA has again displayed the ability to conduct major events of state and national significance.

During the year, AWA and Little Athletics have continued to work together under the banner of the Community Athletics Council of WA. It is now fair to state that this model has now been discussed and considered for national implementation. The Council has been recognised on a State basis, which has enabled a number of joint developmental and transitional programs to be implemented for the betterment of the sport. Results to date have been promising and provide great encouragement for the future of the Council.

This has been a very busy and productive season and I must thank the members of the Board for their personal contributions and commitment. The Board has now achieved a balance and mix of independent professional skills enabling sound governance, which must be the envy of other sports.

AWA now faces the very pleasing challenge of coping with the ever increasing growth of the sport in the forthcoming year.

Finally, on behalf of the Board of AWA, staff, officials and athletes I wish to express our appreciation to the Government of WA, The Minister for Sport the Hon. Mr Terry Waldron and the Department of Sport and Recreation for their ongoing support for creating many funding opportunities enabling the growth and promotion of athletics.

Page 5 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

It is with pleasure that I can report another successful year from a governance, membership and financial perspective.

I would however like this report to promote more than these commercial indicators as athletics in WA has never been in a healthier, more positive position. It is also an opportunity to use the term athletics in its broadest sense with Little Athletics in a similar position with record registrations and an effective, communicative administration led by Executive Officer Samya Monaco who has been a pleasure to work with.

The presence of the Community Council of WA continues to forge strong links between little and senior athletics that enable the sport to deliver a range of development programs and lead the way in this area.

In the past 12 months, we have focused on supporting our clubs with Wayne Loxley the appointment of personnel to coordinate and promote the best Chief Executive Officer sharing of resources and transition from junior to senior athletics.

The magnitude of the growth of senior athletics in WA can be gauged by the fact that weekly competition numbers actually exceed the total number of registered athletes, prior to moving to the WA Athletics Stadium in 2009.

The successful transition program was again supported by the excellent work by Lindsay Bunn and his team in the delivery of the Indigenous Development Program that continues to provide outstanding results throughout regional WA with many of these athletes making their way to compete in the WA All Schools.

There continues to be a strong emphasis on the education and development of coaching and officiating at all levels. The new coaching framework was well accepted and it is a landmark for the sport to finally have someone dedicated to the recruitment and support of officials in Marion Buchanan.

This year contained perhaps the biggest week in WA athletics history with Perth hosting the week long National Junior Championships culminating in the Go for 2 & 5 Perth Track Classic. The National Juniors attracted a record number of athletes including more than 300 from WA which is triple the size of our previous teams.

Athletics WA is now better resourced to focus on High Performance than ever with the support of the Australian Sports Commission and Athletics Australia enabling us to establish the Target Talent Program that supports the elite youth and their coaches. Testimony to this talent is that WA contributed 20% of the Australian team to compete at the World Youth Championships in Ukraine in July.

The presence of this outstanding young talent was further highlighted on the local front with Bri Ilarda, Chartt Miller and Amy McCormick breaking 40 year old state records in the 3000m, 1500m and 2000m respectively.

Athletics WA continues to receive fantastic support from corporate and government agency partners that facilitates the effective delivery of athletics to the broader community and they include the Department of Sport and Recreation, Healthway, Bankwest, Youngs Holden and our media partners Radio 6PR and The West Australian.

Page 6 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

I would like to take this opportunity of making special mention of Bankwest for their expertise and energy in assisting us in developing the Bankwest Gallipoli Run which has reached record numbers and generates another revenue stream for the sport while also contributing to two deserving charities in the RSL and Legacy.

I would also like to again thank our hard working team of John de Bes, Kylie Wheeler, Jayne Mitchell, Marion Buchanan and Alex Malcolm for their contribution in their respective roles throughout the past year.

Alex leaves us as he obtains an opportunity to progress in his chosen field in the media and we wish him well and look forward to his dulcet tone continuing to be the voice of commentary at our competitions.

I am pleased to advise that we have been able to expand our management team with the appointment of Steve Stingemore as Operations Manager and his experience in the sport will be invaluable to our administration team and general membership.

It is also with confidence that I declare the uniqueness of our diverse board that contains a range of professional skills whose fundamental aim is to support the administration in achieving our strategic and operational aims and I would like to personally thank Chairman Dave Van der Walt for his leadership in this area.

As with each year, I leave the final accolade to our fantastic, energetic and ageless group of officials who continue to support our administrative team and members where ever possible and I personally feel indebted to them for their continued support.

Thank you!

Page 7 GO FOR 2 & 5 PERTH TRACK CLASSIC

The 2013 Perth Track Classic culminated the biggest week of athletics in Western Australia which included hosting the National Junior Championships for the first time.

In front of a record crowd of more the 4600, the 2009 World Champion Dani Samuels continued her good form with yet another IAAF World Championships A-Qualifier to win the women’s discus at the Go for 2&5 Perth Track Classic, as three of her Australian Flame teammates achieved B-Qualifiers and (GBR) won the much-anticipated men’s .

Opening her account with 60.86m, Samuels series was consistent with her remaining throws of 59.66m, 59,88m, 61.06m and a foul leading to her winning mark in the final round to take victory from Kim Mulhall (Vic, second, 52.17m) and Taryn Gollshewsky (Qld, third, 51.58m)

Joining Samuels in the mix for IAAF World Championships selection after achieving B-Qualifiers was Liam Zamel-Paez (Qld, ), (WA, javelin) and (Qld, ).

Zamel-Paez, who has missed much of the last two Australian seasons as a consequence of injury, soared a new personal best of 2.29m to win the men’s high jump and record his first qualifier.

London Olympic Gold Medallist A 2010 representative and three-time national champion, Zamel-Paez featured at the Greg Rutherford sailed over 2.10m, 2.16m and 2.21m before Perth Track Classic passing until his winning mark to edge out IAAF World Junior Championships representative (NSW, second, 2.23m).

Returning to the thrower’s runway after a monster 62.53m best effort at the Track Classic, Mickle as a Western Australian was a local draw card at the Go for 2&5 Perth Track Classic. Keen not to disappoint her home crowd, she hurled 60.11m with her third throw to take a clear victory from Australian under 20 champion Wasie Toolis (Qld, second, 45.12m).

“Any competition with a six as the first number is a good result. We’ve taken the foot off the pedal these past two comps and to see some bigger throws as a consequence is a good result,” Mickle said.

Boyd’s start in Perth was her first since returning home to Queensland to train under the guidance of her father Ray Boyd.

Page 8 GO FOR 2 & 5 PERTH TRACK CLASSIC

Relishing the still conditions, the Australian record holder entered the competition last at 4.25m before battling it out with 2012 Olympic debutant Liz Parnov (WA, second, 4.40m) at 4.50m to win. Boyd’s third attempt clearance cemented her success, but when the bar was raised to the IAAF World Championships A-Qualifying mark of 4.60m she stumbled.

In a disappointing result, Olympic silver medallist (Qld) was forced to withdraw from the men’s long jump after experiencing cramp as he ran in to jump.

This left the British record holder and Olympic champion Greg Rutherford (GBR) to battle it out with Commonwealth Games medallist Ignisious Gaisah (GHA) across the six-jump series, with Rutherford soaring 7.89m (w: 0.0) to narrowly defeat the Gaisah (7.76m, w: 0.0).

“This is very disappointing. Obviously so many people were looking forward to seeing me jump against Greg tonight and for me I was keen to close out a long preseason and get back to jumping,” Watt said.

“I would have loved to jump against Mitch because he is one of the best in the world and it’s a shame we couldn’t deliver.” Rutherford added.

On track, 2011 IAAF World Championship representative (NSW) edged closer to the women’s 400m qualifying mark for the IAAF World Championships when she crossed in 52.89 to win.

A new personal best, Rubie’s performance is her first below the magic 53-second barrier and edges her closer to her first open age individual berth on the Australian Flame team.

“I’m getting there. I’m very excited. It’s only the middle of the season, I have pretty much done a PB every time I have raced and I couldn’t be happier considering I am most comfortable running in and Sydney and events there are still to come,” Rubie said.

Alana Boyd clears an early height on the way to winning the Womens Pole Vault at the Go for 2 & 5 Perth Track Classic

Page 9 LONDON OLYMPICS

Five Athletics WA athletes competed at the 2012 London .

Steve Hooker returned as the defending champion from and the Olympic record-holder. Hooker qualified for the final in London with a sole clearance at 5.50m.

Unfortunately in the 14-man final Hooker failed to clear a height. His Olympic crown and Olympic record went to Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie, who cleared 5.97m to win gold from German pair Bjorn Otto (5.91m) and Raphael Holzdeppe (5.91m).

Reigning Commonwealth champion in the women’s pole vault Alana Boyd competed in London alongside Liz Parnov.

Boyd progressed to the final after clearing 4.55m in qualifying but Parnov missed the final after failing to clear a height.

Boyd finished 11th in the final clearing 4.30m with her third attempt but failing with all three jumps at 4.45m.

Jennifer Suhr of the United States won gold with a leap of 4.75m.

Kim Mickle competed in the women’s javelin, but missed the final after throwing 59.23m in reacts after he failed in his qualifying. Mickle finished 17th overall behind final attempt in the Mens Pole Vault at the Czech gold medallist Barbora Spotakova London Olympics (69.55m).

Ben Offereins competed in the men’s 4x400m relay. Offereins ran in the heat alongside , Brendan Cole and .

The Australian team finished fifth in their heat in a time of 3:03.17 and missed the final.

Page 10 STRIVE TRACK AND FIELD SEASON

The 2012/13 Strive Track & Field season started on the 26th of October 2013 and concluded 7th April 2013. During the season the WA Athletics Stadium played host to 17 Strive programs. Friday night was again athletics night however for the second season we conducted the last meet prior to Christmas on the Thursday evening which seems successful and the final meet of the season on the Sunday morning.

All the Championship events were again held at the WA Athletics Stadium. These included the WA All Schools, WA State Championships, Combined Events State Championships, State 10km walk and the John Gilmour State 10km.

Member numbers were up by roughly 100 members on last season almost entirely due to an increase in the juniors. This was quite likely Kylie Wheeler a result of WA hosting the Australian Junior Championships. What Competitions Manager was most promising though was the increased attendance at the Strive competitions.

As always there were some exceptional results during the season including a number of interstate athletes who broke 28 All Comers records at the Australian Championships. However special congratulations go to the following WA athletes who broke records:

• Shannon McCann: Open Women’s 100m Hurdles 13.31 (State) Sydney

• Amy McCormick: U18 Women’s 2000m Steeplechase 6:39.58 (State & All Comers)

• Bri Ilarda: Open, U20 & U18 Women’s 3000m 9:28.0 (State)

• Chartt Miller: U18 Men’s 1500m 3:48.33 (State)

• Tarinah Nazaroff: U16 Women’s 3000m 9:47.65 (State & All Comers)

WA State Championships This season saw another trial of format for the State Championships. Once again the age groups combined in a return to the ‘all ages’ championships but they were contested over two weeks, Thursday 14th, Friday 15th and Friday 22nd February. There was an increase in competitor numbers with 465 athletes competing and this would be most likely due to the increased number of juniors competing in a bid to earn selection or preparing for the Australian Junior Championships.

Page 11 AUSTRALIAN ALL SCHOOLS 2012 REPORT - HOBART

Friday 30th December – Sunday 2nd December 2012 A team of 74 athletes represented Western Australia at the Australian All Schools which was hosted by Athletics Tasmania. The majority of the team flew over on the Thursday and accommodation was at the University of Tasmania overlooking the Derwent River. The weather conditions were extremely windy on the Saturday and only slightly better on the Sunday. Extra-curricular activities included a trip to the top of Mount Wellington, a visit to the modern art gallery MONA and refreshment breaks at Salamanca Bay.

The athletes are to be commended for the way they handled the weather conditions and were able to put in some magnificent individual and relay performances. For the first time Western Australia won the Small States Shield John De Bes which is a wonderful achievement. Congratulations to the athletes and a big thank you to the parents and coaches for their support. Development Manager Western Australia wins the Small State Shield.

WA Athletics Stadium - 12th-17th March 2013 The Australian Junior Championships was hosted by Athletics WA in Perth for the first time. Over 1500 athletes from interstate and overseas participated in the six day championships.

Local athletes took advantage of this rare opportunity to compete at a national level on their home track. The WA team grew to a massive 311 competitors which highlights the travel problems we have when sending teams to the east coast. It was pleasing to see an increase in the U/14 & U/15 age groups.

The focus is always on the medal winners and it was pleasing to see the WA Team pick up 70 individual and 4 relay medals. The most pleasing result in terms of development is that on 213 occasions WA athletes finished in the top 8 showing how much depth we have in this state. Congratulations to all the coaches who have worked hard to get their athletes to the National Juniors and well done to team managers - John de Bes & Jayne Mitchell.

Page 15 TARGET TALENT PROGRAM

Target Talent Program 2012-2013 Report It is pleasing to see the current athletes in the Target Talent Program (TTP) achieving the high standards set by Athletics Australia’s HP Matrix. This year four athletes achieved the matrix and all squad members were above 98% of the matrix. Another objective of the TTP is to provide a pathway for promising juniors to progress on to WAIS scholarships and then to Australian representation. Congratulations to 2011/12 TTP Squad members, Nina Kennedy and Emma Philippe on their WAIS scholarships selection.

Seminars & Workshops Giving coaches the opportunity to update their knowledge in an informal manner is seen as a very important aspect of coach development. A variety of ways were implemented to allow coaches to access the latest information and also to meet with other coaches and share ideas.

Coaches Breakfasts.

Two breakfast meetings were organised at the Department of Sport and Recreation in Leederville. The DSR provide their meeting room free of charge. Jill Taylor, AA Coaching Manager spoke at the first breakfast about the coaching framework. Chris Perkin, Eagles & WAIS physiotherapist conducted a presentation on “Injuries and the young athlete” at the second breakfast. Over twenty coaches attended each session. Each presentation was videoed and coaches could access this through the AWA website.

Annual report season 2012-2013

OFFICIALS - PARTICIPATION In moving forward to achieve a greater depth and quality of officials AWA has made considerable changes to the structure governing the recruitment, training and retention of officials during the summer 2012 - 2013 track and field season.

Athletics Australia also realising the need to recruit and train more officials formed the Athletics Australia Officials Advisory Committee, to which AWA Board member Stephen Stingemore was appointed. The intent of this Committee is to recruit and identify potential officials for the being held in Queensland. Flowing on from this appointment, Fiona Brown was appointed as AWA’s Education Officer assisted by Jennifer Wheatley.

Under the auspices of the Community Athletics Council of WA Marion Buchanan was appointed as the Officials Coordinator for both AWA and WALA.

This group now forms the basis for the future recruitment and training Marion Buchanan of officials to deliver greater ‘Participation’ and professionalism by Officials Coordinator volunteer officials.

In recognition of the role that officials play in the , AWA’s next phase is to create and formalise an ‘Officials Club’ dedicated to the management and needs of officials.

This season a strong emphasis has been on the education and development of officials resulting in educational and awareness seminars being presented on track, jumps, throws, general and walks. These seminars were well attended with an average of 22 officials at each session. Supporting the seminars were accredited officials, Lindsey Glass (throws practical) Jeanette Robertson (track and general) Bruce Wilson and Marion Buchanan (walks).

As part of the development program a ‘Mentor’ system based on competency has been developed where officials work at a competition site with their mentor and are provided with timely and relevant feedback.

The aim is to provide the officials with increased knowledge and to assist the implementation of Athletics Australia’s new Joint Officials Education structure currently being developed.

AWA officials recently upgraded their Athletics Australia qualifications by successfully completing examinations in various disciplines and further examinations are being held in May and June.

Although only recently implemented the officials’ new structures has resulted in new regular officials with others involved on an irregular capacity. The emphasis on education and development has resulted in a refreshed energy within the officials’ community and with new recruits joining resulting in a renewed vitality at competitions.

The highlight of the 2012 – 13 seasons was the Australian Junior National Championships combined with the Perth Track Classic held in Perth during March 2013. Underpinning the success of this competition were 175 officials from around Australia. Key official roles were awarded to the following local officials, Fiona Brown, June Streeter, Marion Buchanan, Carol Hale, Bob Chalmers and Geoff Garnett. These key officials were supported by local officials and volunteers.

Page 19 OFFICIALS

Western Australian officials also officiated at the National All Schools in Hobart, Schools Knockout in Launceston, AA Classics in Hobart, Melbourne and Adelaide, National Open Championships in Sydney, 20km and 50km National Road Walking Championships in Hobart and Melbourne. It is evident that AWA officials are recognised for their dedication and knowledge in these appointments.

However, the efforts of AWA officials is most importantly recognised for their loyalty and commitment to the ‘Strive Track and Field’ competitions conducted weekly during the summer season. This competition hones not only the athlete’s skills but also enables the development and training of officials.

It is difficult to sufficiently reward and recognise the efforts of all the officials but during the past season the following officials were formally recognised:

Page 20 CLUBS

Club Development A key priority for Athletics in WA this year was to improve the capacity of our clubs to provide value in membership for athletes of all ages and ability levels and to improve the transition from junior to senior athletics. This philosophy was endorsed by the Community Athletics Council and they have coordinated this development.

A Little Athletics centre and the senior club operating as one, sharing the same training ground, uniform and coaching expertise is the perfect model. But not one size fits all, particularly with junior sport and the strong reliance on volunteers, so Jayne Mitchell was appointed as regional clubs officer in 2011 to coordinate this exercise.

Jayne completed an audit of the Little Athletics centres and senior club with a view to recommending which areas to focus on and subsequently three Club Managers were appointed to work specifically with a selected Little Athletics Centre to develop this model with a senior club.

The best sharing of resources and transition from junior to senior Jayne Mitchell athletics is the main aim of this program and managers were Coach Coordinator and appointed at North Beach (Paul Edmiston), Canning Districts (Wes Clubs Officer Salisbury) and Kingsway (Alan Savage) in an endeavour to support athlete, coach and volunteer development. Each manager worked to achieve the objectives of the program within the respective needs and parameters of their club and there was solid progress made across all three clubs.

We will continue to promote this program with the support of Little Athletics WA through the Community Athletics Council.

Long Term Athlete Development Club Development Officer, Jayne Mitchell continued to meet with clubs in order to facilitate the development of Senior clubs at the Little Athletics level. The most advanced clubs are Bayswater/Embleton, Darling Range Sport College, Yanchep LAC, Narrogin LAC and Kingsway.

Page 21 GO FOR 2 & 5 TRANSITION PROGRAM

Introduction The 2012/13 season has seen increases in participation of transition age athletes 14-17 year olds culminating in a very successful Australian Junior Championships March 2013.

Increase in memberships The graph indicates the increases in transition age athletes participating in State All Schools, and State Junior Championships and the trend for the following season. The increase in numbers of transition age athletes competing at Strive Competitions this season has also peaked with 300 athletes in U18 and below. These events were promoted by AWA and LAWA to maximize participation. All School participants were sent a free entry voucher into the strive competition. Numbers were monitored and 104 vouchers presented.

Go for 2 & 5 Little Athletics Challenge Series

The second year of offering this competition to transition age (14-17) athletes has proven to be a success. Two/three clubs were invited to compete in a point scoring competition prior to the Strive Competition. Athletes competed in three events and the winning team progressed to the Grand Final which involved a total of four clubs. Approximately 230 athletes competed over the five competitions with many of them staying on afterwards to compete in the senior Strive competition. This successful competition will continue next season. The LA Centres included Hamersley, Baldivis, Southern Stars, Bayswater, Joondalup, Narrogin, Rockingham, Kingsway & Melville.

Each athlete received a free voucher to return to compete in a Strive competition, plus Healthway donated some drink bottles and merchandise.

The winning team of each round was awarded a gift voucher donated by Sports Specialist for their Centre and the Grand Final winners were presented with a perpetual trophy and replica to take home.

Pathways for Athletes

This season an athlete progression guide was developed to give a clear vision of which pathways are available for every athlete. This was produced by the LAWA Development Officer and the Clubs Officer. It has enabled athletes to see a long term participation plan and this document will be included in the information given at the start of each season to transition age Little Athletes.

Page 22 CROSS COUNTRY SEASON

Cross Country Season 2013 Athletics WA’s (AWA) cross country season now incorporates the Bankwest Gallipoli Fun Run, which is held before Anzac day each year in Kings Park. This is becoming a feature event of the community fun run calendar and attracted approximately 2 500 competitors this year. This event is reported separately within the annual report.

AWA’s State Championship events now solely compromises the winter seasons.

The State Short Course Championship opened the season in May at Perry Lakes with strong fields entered in all age groups. Linda Spencer won the women’s event followed by Kate Fitzsimons and Hannah Castle. The men’s event was won by Christopher Dale followed by Stuart Caulfield and Yunus Mohammed.

Linda and Christopher were eligible to win the $250.00 incentive offered to any senior athlete who won both the Long and Short Course events.

The next major event was the State Championship, which is conducted by the WA Marathon Club on behalf of AWA. The winners and ‘State Champion’ were Roberto Busi and Tina Major. Both Tina and Roberto were invited to attend the Kobe Marathon in Japan to represent the State. This event which attracts a field of over 80 000 is being held in November 2013.

Following the Marathon the State Long Course was conducted in June also at Perry Lakes and again attracted very competitive fields. The men’s event was won by Joshua Tedesco from Thomas Bruins and Scott Tamblin. Joshua came from behind to win from Thomas in the last 3 km lap and make amends for his lap miss count at the 2012 race. Linda Spencer became the first person to win the cash incentive prize by winning the women’s event from Kate Fitzsimons and Lauren Spencer.

At the State 10 km road championship conducted by the WAMC in July, Kate Fitzsimons broke her run of second places with a strong win from Michelle Rodgers and Mathilda Connell. Marc See won the men’s race from Joshua Tedesco and Paul McKay in a very competitive time.

The winter season produced some very exciting and competitive races and was well supported by athletes.

The dedicated cross country officials again ensured the events were conducted in a friendly and welcoming environment.

The successful partnership between the WAMC and AWA continues to work harmoniously to provide successful events, which helps to promote middle and long distance running in WA. The efforts of the WA Marathon Club and their officials is greatly appreciated and welcomed.

The ongoing support of the athletes and their supporters for their commitment to the Cross Country season is, as always, acknowledged and appreciated.

Page 23 BANKWEST GALLIPOLI FUN RUN 2013

Bankwest Gallipoli Fun Run 2013 Sunday 21 April 2013 The Sunday before Anzac Day is firmly becoming established and known as the Bankwest Gallipoli Fun Run in Kings Park to recognise the ANZAC spirit. The event has grown from very humble beginnings to a major event on the community fun run calendar. In partnership with Bankwest and Athletics WA (AWA) the event has received overwhelming promotion with colourful graphics appearing around every corner and bus.

Promotion for the event started in January 2013 with immediate results. Competitors started to enter the event months out from the race day. The early signs were the race was going to be bigger and better than ever.

This year Bankwest advertised the first 1 000 entries were to receive a free race tee shirt but this was quickly extended to every runner. Entries continued to grow and closer to race day it was apparent the event was going to exceed the event capacity. Due to the popular demand of the event no on day race entries were permitted.

This year pre-race day collection of the race packs was organised at Bankwest in Murray Street Perth and the office of AWA. This pre-race distribution worked very efficiently and is worthy of consideration in 2014.

At the close of entries approximately 2 000 entries had been received, which included many family entries groups.

Page 24 BANKWEST GALLIPOLI FUN RUN 2013

Approaching race day conflicting weather reports were the only major concern but fortunately the weather remained cool with no rain. To accommodate the more competitive runners the 4 and 8 km races were separated enabling a faster and safer competition. At 8.30am the race patron, Mr John Gilmour, started the 4 km run for 884 runners after the playing of the ‘last post’.

The first through the Bankwest arch and the winner of the men’s 4 km race was Chris Dale followed by Jonas Aranda and Chris de Boer. The winner of women’s 4 km race was Mathilda Connell followed by Tarinah Nazaroff and Hannah Castle.

At 9.00 am following the ‘Last Post’ ceremony 990 competitors started the 8 km race.

The women’s 8 km race winner was Amy McCormick with Tina Major second followed by Rochelle Rogers. The men’s 8 km race winner was Roberto Busi with Thomas Bruins second followed by Andrew Govus. This was a very exciting race but was won by strong and determined running by a very excited and emotional Roberto Busi.

A total of 1874 competitors participated in the 2013 Bankwest Gallipoli Fun Run.

The winners of each race received a generous cash prize.

The event was concluded with presentations by Mr Paul Vivian, (Bankwest) and Josh Kennedy (West Coast Eagles and Bankwest Ambassador) in welcome sunshine.

A lasting memory from the 2013 race is the sea of Bankwest orange merging with the green of Kings Park. The ‘orange’ Bankwest tee shirt added a ‘blast’ of colour to the event.

Regardless of the success of the ‘race day’ more importantly were the funds raised on behalf of the race beneficiaries, RSL, Legacy and AWA, which has been generously matched and increased by Bankwest. Bankwest generously matched the registration fee for the first 1 000 entries for the race beneficiaries.

Thanks to the eagerness and support of Bankwest, Botanical Gardens and Park Authority and all the long serving volunteers the Bankwest Stephen Stingemore Gallipoli Fun Run continues to grow exponentially. The 2013 event was Out of Stadia Coordinator a great success and all bears well for 2014.
