Page 3 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

It is with pleasure that I prepare this report after another successful year for Athletics WA, a year that was highlighted on the international scene with the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the World Junior Championships in Eugene USA.

WA was well represented by our females in Glasgow with eight girls being selected. Congratulations to Kim Mickle (Jav), Shannon McCann (100m H), Lyndsay Pekin (400m H, 400m Relay) Ella Pardy (T37/38), Madison de Rozario (T54 1500m), Liz and Vicky Parnov (PV) and Zoe Timmers (HJ). Kim Mickle again led the way on the podium winning Gold and continuing her outstanding performances at the international level.

Nina Kennedy and Emma Philippe (), Ella Solin (400m H) and Jordan Makins (800m) all will have gained invaluable experience through their experience of competing at the World Juniors. While not finishing with a medal, Nina Kennedy again confirmed her bright future by equalling the Australian Junior and Youth Records with David Van der Walt 4.40m and she has had an amazing 12 months. Chairman

WA were also well represented at this year’s IAAF World Relay Championships in the Bahamas where Lyndsay Pekin and Brianna Beahan competed in the women’s 4x400m and 4x100m respectively.

At the local level Athletics WA hosted the National Cross Country Championships in Albany in August which was an outstanding success!

Our sincere appreciation to the City of Albany as their genuine interest in partnering with Athletics WA enabled us to take this national event to regional WA where the many visitors from the East were able to witness the history and beauty of WA’s oldest city for the first time. The on- going support of Healthway is also acknowledged as the major sponsor.

The event was an outstanding success and as with all athletics events, relied on the efforts of many volunteers who continue to contribute to our sport. I would like to thank all the staff and volunteers and in particular, note the effort of our Operations Manager Stephen Stingemore for his outstanding coordination and management.

From a whole of sport perspective, the Community Athletics Council continues to facilitate support in the areas of coaching, officiating and the transition of athletes. This delivers benefits to both Little Athletics and senior athletics.

The Council has also benefited from the inclusion of the new WALA Chairman Teresa Blackman who provides a refreshing appetite for the sport to consider new strategies to bring both levels of the sport closer.

The Department of Sport and Recreation has given the Council an ultimatum to seriously consider a whole of sport approach or risk the loss of current funding. Consequently the Council Chairman, Domenic Staltari has met with the WALA and AWA boards separately and tabled a number of recommendations for the sport to consider implementing over the next two years. These have been approved by both boards which provides great optimism for the future of the sport.

Page 4 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

This year a loss of some sponsorship dollars resulted in Athletics WA hosting the inaugural Auction with the Stars which combined an entertaining sport panel with a brief auction while enjoying dinner. It was a fantastic night and thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance and thanks to our Chief Executive and his staff for their organization.

At a national level we are buoyed by the appointment of a new Chief Executive at Athletics Australia in Phil Jones. Phil comes with a strong sporting executive background after a successful stint at Sailing Australia and we look forward to Phil engaging with the Member Associations in a more positive manner than has been the case in recent years.

In accordance with our constitution, after having served as Chairman for the past four years I will vacate the position at this year’s Annual General Meeting. I would like to thank my fellow board members who bring a range of personalities and expertise to the table and have made my time as Chairman so enjoyable.

David Van der Walt

Chairman

Page 5 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

To avoid overlap with the Chairman’s report, this year my report will address specifically the pillars of our Strategic Plan, allowing the Chairman to offer an overview of the organisation’s activities and performances for the past year.

Leadership

This year the Athletics WA board endorsed a Board Governance Charter that details the role of the board and the management team and appears on the website for all members and stakeholders to read. In summary it offers the following.

The performance of the organisation is driven by board-endorsed strategies that are developed and implemented by the CEO and management team. That team consists of four full time and seven part time employees who service a range of seasonal activities and events. Athletics WA’s board comprises eight members who deploy a range of professional and commercial Wayne Loxley skills to maintain an effective governance framework that ensures Chief Executive Officer the sport is administered at a consistently high standard.

This year we have continued our strong relationship with our major stakeholder and partner in Little Athletics through the Community Athletics Council. With the support of the Department of Sport and Recreation the Council has endorsed a series of key recommendations for the whole of sport to undertake in the next 12 – 18 months. This agreement provides great optimism for the future of the sport.

At a national level, the Chief Executives of all Member Associations of senior athletics and their colleagues from Little Athletics convened the first Athletics Summit in Melbourne in February. This was an enlightening and positive meeting where for the first time the whole of sport discussed strategies and methods of improving the delivery of our sport. It has been agreed these will be convened regularly with the next to be held in in September.

Participation

The appointment of David Smith as a part time social media consultant to drive our participation programs this season has been a key part in growth across all areas. This growth includes general membership, particularly in the all important transition age and Athletes with a Disability.

We have continued to promote and support our coaches and officials through a strong education and personal development program, coordinated by Lyn Foreman, Jayne Mitchell, and Fiona Brown.

In remote and regional WA, our Indigenous Development Program also continues to develop under the guidance of coordinator Lindsay Bunn and his athletes who assist in the delivery. A major step forward this year was the establishment of an Athletics Academy in Broome and the signing of a Memo of Understanding.

Page 6 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

Competition and Events

Athletics WA conducted an online survey of the Strive Track and Field competition this season which revealed a very positive response from our membership. Questions relating to programming and timetabling, officiating, results service and entry process were all rated very good / good by more than 70% of members with 82% of respondents rating their overall competition experience as very good / good.

Athletics WA hosted the Go for 2 & 5 National Cross Country Championships in August and for the first time took these Championships to regional WA. More than 1,000 competitors and 2,500 visitors embarked on Albany for the best part of a week, enjoying the hospitality and beauty of the oldest settlement of WA and a very successful event. We have never experienced anything like the support received from the City of Albany before and combined with the support of major sponsor Healthway created an enjoyable experience for all. I would like to congratulate Operations Manager Stephen Stingemore for his management of the event.

Our very successful Bankwest Gallipoli Run series this year was expanded to the regional areas of Bunbury and Albany which we plan to consolidate over the next few years. The Perth leg proved to be another major success with 2000 participants. Our major partner Bankwest continue to provide amazing support for this event and this year were joined by Channel Nine and the Sunday Times in the event promotion.

High Performance

After just over twelve months in the role, Development Manager Mel Tantrum has had a remarkably positive impact on our High Performance program.

The number of athletes in the Target Talent Program have increased which has resulted in an increase in the number of these young talented athletes being selected in Australian Junior, Youth and Underage teams.

Mel has also introduced the A Squad which comprises athletes 20 years of age and over who have the potential to be selected in a senior Australia team in the next 3 years. With support from DSR these athletes are able to benefit from specialised strength and conditioning in an endeavour to compliment their physical development.

Mel’s influence has also seen positive results in the paralympic area with a 50% increase in AWA athletes competing at state and National championships.

Commercial

Although disappointing to lose our major sponsor of the Perth Track Classic in Healthway, we were fortunate that Jandakot City came to the rescue and enabled us to host another successful event. Thanks to David Van Der Walt and his board for their generous support, the Jandakot City Track Classic provided a number of elite performances, highlighted by our own Nina Kennedy breaking the World Junior Pole Vault Record.

Page 7 CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

Other events contributing to the financial viability of the organisation included the National Cross Country Championships in Albany which were kindly supported by the City of Albany and Healthway, the Bankwest Gallipoli Run and the inaugural Athletics WA Auction with the Stars. This night was compered by Tim Gossage and was generously supported by our own National Champion Kim Mickle, West Coast Eagle Josh Kennedy and elite cricket coach Mickey Arthur.

My personal thanks to all who attended and in particular major sponsor Matso’s, the Floreat Bowling Club and all donors of auction items that enabled us to raise some important funds.

From an overall perspective, our sincere appreciation to our major partner in the Department of Sport and Recreation, Healthway, Bankwest, Youngs Holden and media partners The West Australian and Radio 6PR.

As a second tier sport our challenge is to compete against the industry heavyweights who thrive on financial windfalls provided by television and media opportunities that are not open to track and field, the bedrock of all athletic competition.

Foundation

Our key objective in this area was to provide the appropriate people and effective processes to achieve all other objectives and fittingly this allows me to close by thanking all my staff. Without naming individuals as they all appear in the directory of this report, I would like to again acknowledge their contribution.

As expressed at the commencement of this report, the key to an organisation retaining motivated and satisfied staff is for a board to allow the staff to approach their work in an independent manner. On their behalf I would like to thank our board for their support and guidance over the past year.

On a personal level I would also like to sincerely thank our Chairman David Van Der Walt who is standing down from the role after fulfilling his four year term. David has been a supportive, clear thinking and generous Chairman during this time and of great personal assistance.

Finally, as in every year, the final tribute is to all of our officials who contribute enormous amounts of their time to allow our members to pursue their athletics dreams no matter what the level – thank you!

Page 8 XX COMMONWEALTH GAMES

The 2014 Commonwealth Games commenced in Glasgow on Wednesday 23 July, with athletics competition spanning seven days from Sunday 27 July. The competing Australian athletics team was 98-strong, the largest ever to compete in the green and gold offshore.

Western Australia were well represented with eight athletes selected. The all - female cast included Kim Mickle (Jav), Shannon McCann (100m H), Lyndsay Pekin (400m H, 400m Relay) Ella Pardy (T37/38), Madison de Rozario (T54 1500m), Liz and Vicky Parnov (PV) and Zoe Timmers (HJ). Congratulations to all on a fantastic achievement!

Kim Mickle won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games women’s javelin final in a memorable evening session of Day Four of the athletics at Hampden Park in Glasgow (SCO).

Mickle, the 2013 IAAF World Championships silver medallist and a favourite for gold, made her intentions clear right from the outset. Her very first throw of the competition broke the Commonwealth Games women’s javelin record as it landed at 62.97m. The record didn’t last long however as she then broke it with her second throw of the competition which went even further. Her second attempt reached 65.96m, a distance that no one else in the event could match. Mickle threw 61.45m on her third attempt and fouled her three remaining attempts on purpose but it didn’t matter as she had won the gold even before taking her final throw.

“I’ve dreamed of this moment – well literally I’ve visualised it – for the last month,” said a delighted Mickle after the medal ceremony. “Every single night I’ve pictured myself on top of the dais. So I was just saying before I hope I don’t wake up in ten minutes … and it was another dream.

“It was the way I scripted it in my head, though for it to actually happen the way I felt it should of is pretty sweet.”

When asked about her first record-breaking throws Mickle said “That was a case of ‘make sure you get one out’ and nice and comfortable. The second one, once I knew that (first one) was out, that’s when I unleashed.”

Page 9 XX COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Mickle’s victory was all the more remarkable because she had been carrying a painful ‘turf-toe’ injury during the competition.

“I unfortunately hurt it about four days ago pretty badly and I was trying and trying and trying … because obviously a toe, it kind of sounds a bit pathetic, but it was my turning pivot foot and it’s really sore so unfortunately I had to put a bit of local anaesthetic in their just to numb it up and now it’s run out and I’m in immense pain. But it’s all worth it. Like I say, it’s only a toe. I’ve got nine other toes.”

Shannon McCann performed extremely well in her first international competition at this level reaching the women’s 100m hurdles Final and finishing eighth in 13.60.

Zoe Timmers (WA) cleared 1.78m to finish equal tenth in the women’s high jump final.

In the heats of the 4x400m relay, the Australian women’s team of Anneliese Rubie (NSW), Caitlin Sargent (Qld), Jess Gulli (Vic) and Lyndsay Pekin (WA) ensured they advanced by finishing second in their heat in a time of 3:32.40.

Jodi Elkington (NSW) won the women’s T37/38 long jump in emphatic fashion with our own Ella Pardy finishing ninth with 3.62m for 252 points (-2.5).

Unfortunately Madi de Rozario withdrew from the wheelchair race due to DV

IAAF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The largest ever team of 61 Australians competed at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene (USA) from 22nd – 27th July with four Western Australians included.

Nina Kennedy and Emma Philippe (Pole Vault), Ella Solin (400m H) and Jordan Makins (800m) all gained invaluable experience from competing at this level which augers well for the future of athletics in WA.

In the pole vault, Kennedy equalled the Australian Junior and Youth Records with a leap of 4.40m, finishing fourth behind Russian Alena Lutkovskaya who won with a new championship record of 4.50m.

“I did the best I can and in the end I didn’t medal, but I got 4.40m and two PBs, I am so, so happy.” said Kennedy.

Kennedy is still eligible for the next edition of the championships and was looking forward to the opportunity.

“I am in the youngest age group so maybe I can come back in Kazan in 2016 and medal there.”

Unfortunately Philippe had to withdraw from the pole vault final due to injury but she has had a fantastic year and the rivalry between her and Kennedy will be a feature of Australian athletics for years to come.

Solin performed admirably finishing 6th in her semi-final, running 60.62 and Makins finished 4th in his heat with a time of 1:51.02.

Page 10 93RD AUSTRALIAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Forty-six of the best athletes from the West entered the 93rd Australian Athletics Championships held at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (formerly known as the QE2 Stadium – host venue of the 1982 Commonwealth Games). As well as vying for the title of Australian Champion, athletes were also aiming for selection for the IAAF World Championships to be held in Beijing in August and the IPC World Championships to be held in Doha later this year.

Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medallist and WAIS athlete Kim Mickle was the stand out performer for Western Australia, claiming her 10th Australian Title and confirming her selection in the Australian Flame Team bound for the IAAF Beijing World Championships. Mickle easily progressed from the heats with an automatic qualifying first throw of 55.23m in the Women’s Javelin on Friday morning. In the finals on Saturday, it was a close battle with South African Sunette Viljoen who threw a best of 63.29m. Mickle, coached by Grant Ward, scored her best throw of 61.02m in unfavourable winds to retain her title of Australian Champion and book her seat to Beijing.

In the women’s pole vault, Nina Kennedy placed second behind Alana Boyd (Qld), clearing 4.20m. Matthew Cowie, from the Grant Ward stable, also claimed the silver medal in the Men’s Shot Put.

Our Para-athletes won four of the eleven WA medals, with Ella Pardy claiming two silvers in the Ambulant 100m and 200m. It took a world record breaking performance to beat Pardy, and 13 year old new-comer Isis Holt (Vic) did just that. Both athletes should be on the selector’s list when the IPC World Championships Team is announced. Brad Scott performed well in his favoured 1500m while Madi de Rozario was back in action at the Australian titles, claiming the bronze in the 800m wheelchair event.

Thomas Brennan cleared 2.15m in the men’s high jump to claim the bronze medal, while in the mutli’s, Ella Solin and Poppy Schwass both finished on the medal dais in the Open and U20 Heptathlon respectively. A full list of WA medal winners and finalists can be found here:

Page 15 2015 AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS, SYDNEY NSW

A team of 168 Athletics WA athletes travelled to New South Wales for the 2015 Australian Junior Athletics Championships held at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Stadium from 11-15 March 2015. WA athletes compete in 329 events across the 5-day program in U14 to U20 age groups. As well as national championship status, athletes were chasing selection for the 2015 World Youth Championships, 2015 Commonwealth Youth Championships, National U17 and U19 Squads and the State TTP and Talent ID Squads.

Forty-two athletes elected to stay with the WA State Team Management, with staff providing team management, meals, and ground transport for these athletes. Accommodation was secured at Lane Cove River Tourist Park, 15 minutes from the stadium. Team Management included Mel Tantrum (Team Manager), David Smith (Assistant Team Manager / Social Media), Anne Stingemore (Assistant Team Manager / Relays), Paul Burgess (Pole Vault Coach), and Robert Harper (Team Physiotherapist).

While in Sydney, Athletics WA provided the services of Team Management for all WA athletes, coordinated the relay teams, and Team Physiotherapist Rob Harper performed over 100 treatments. A team photograph was taken at the pre-departure team meeting in Perth and also during the competition at the track. A medal winners’ photograph was also arranged following the conclusion of the competition. Team atmosphere was enhanced by all athletes receiving two WA Team t-shirts and by encouraging all WA athletes, coaches and parents to sit together in the grandstand near the finish line.

The coordination of relay teams once again proved to be a huge undertaking. Sincere thanks to Anne Stingemore and Maria Taylor who coordinated all of the teams. Anne and Maria were supported by four coaches who assisted with coaching and managing relay teams including Donelle McInerney, Russell Mathanda, Tony Walters, and Lyn Foreman. WA was represented in 13 of the 14 relays and our teams won three medals (two gold and one bronze).

Social Media was heavily utilised during the competition with our #TeamWA2015. Medal winners, results and updates were communicated via our social media sites and this was well received by athletes and parents during the competition. Thank you to David Smith for his outstanding work in this area.

Western Australia won a total of 77 medals (27 Gold, 23 Silver and 27 Bronze), easily surpassing the 13 gold medals won in 2014. Clare Gibson (High Jump) was selected on the 2015 World Youth Championships to be held in Cali, Columbia. Ben Chamberlain (3000m), Grant Szalek (High Jump) and Lachlan McDermott (100m) were selected for the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa, while Abby D’Sylva (1500m & 2000m SC) and Amy Tolcon (100m & 200m) were selected for the 2015 Oceania Championships. Page 19 JANDAKOT CITY TRACK CLASSIC

Seventeen-year-old Nina Kennedy (WA) was the toast of international athletics, with her performance of 4.59m to win at the Jandakot City Track Classic in Perth, the biggest ever leap by an under 20 aged athlete outdoors.

Eclipsing the previous best ever mark by one centimetre, the performance was also an Australian under 20 record and a qualifier for the open-aged IAAF World Championships in Beijing (CHN), where the young-gun will likely be the youngest on the Australian Flame team.

“Oh my god, I’m speechless,” Kennedy said.

“My main goal was 4.50m, and when I cleared that I decided that I had nothing to lose so I took the bar to 4.59m and just hoped that I could do it. The crowd really helped me for sure. It has just given me so much confidence, all my training has paid off and there are still so many opportunities to come.”

“I just have to work toward Nationals now, and then hopefully I’ll have the chance to go to the World Championships. That’ll be amazing. I’m still a junior, and with World Juniors not until next year the chance to go to Beijing is now a reality, and then next year I think I can do better than just mix with the girls my age.”

Coached by Alex Parnov at the Western Australia Institute of Sport, Kennedy is an IAAF World Youth and IAAF World Junior Championships finalist. She had already bettered her career best in 2015 on one other occasion, with a leap of 4.41m coming last month.

Kennedy’s fellow home-town hero Kim Mickle (WA) also delivered one of the performances of the night in the women’s javelin.

Hitting a world leading mark of 63.87m on her second attempt, the Commonwealth champion and Australian record holder Mickle was able to out-class her Glasgow 2014 teammates of Kelsey Lee-Roberts (ACT) and Kathryn Mitchell (Vic) to achieve her first qualifier for the IAAF World Championships.

“That was great. I was really hoping to hit a qualifier, and when we first rocked up out there tonight I thought that it was going to be very hard to get given the conditions. The body isn’t feeling great and the preparation hasn’t been wonderful at all so to throw that throw was probably a miracle,” Mickle said.

On the track, national record holder Melissa Breen (ACT) won the sprint double of the women’s 100m and 200m. Stopping the clock in 11.41 (w: +2.8) in the shorter sprint, Breen returned to the track in the final event of the night to win the 200m in a time of 23.75 (w: +2.8).

Michelle Jenneke (NSW) made it two wins from two starts this Australian Athletics Tour in the women’s 100m hurdles. Stopping the clock at 13.11 (w: +2.3), the performance was her second fastest ever after the personal best of 13.04 she ran at the Canberra Track Classic.

Page 20 ATHLETICS WA SEASON

Strive Competition The 2014/15 Strive season consisted of 16 Interclub meets from the 24th October 2014 through till the 20th March 2015. While Friday night remained the regular interclub competition night, the popular Thursday night leading up to Christmas was supported by Thursday night competition before the long weekends. This seemed to be successful and we will continue to trial and monitor their success. As always there were some exceptional performances throughout the season. Ranging from athletes making huge improvements on their personal bests to those WA athletes bettering records. During the Jandakot City Track Classic there were five All Comer records broken by interstate guests however a special congratulations go to the following WA Athletes who broke records:

Page 24 SOCIAL MEDIA

Over the last twelve months Athletics WA has utilised social media to better communicate and engage with members and sponsors. Comprising five social media campaigns, we have been able to grow our social media databases and increase awareness of our events and the sport.

Athletics WA's biggest track and field event of the year was the Jandakot City Track Classic, the WA stop on the Athletics Australia Tour. As a way to activate online engagement for this year's Jandakot City Track Classic we created a social media countdown using Social Media frames to highlight the event and the athletes taking part. In addition to Athletics Australia’s content, our social media frame campaign improved event awareness by over 160%. The campaign was boosted by Nina Kennedy’s World Junior record breaking Pole Vault jump, with the video of her jump being watched over 73,000 time on Facebook.

One of the year’s biggest social media campaigns was the #OurStory social media initiative, which we ran in conjunction with the 2015 Bankwest Gallipoli Run series. Utilising Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, the campaign aimed to share the stories and names of people who have defended Australia while honouring the ANZAC spirit through their brave sacrifices. The campaign was successful in promoting the event with over 12,000 Facebook users seeing the initiative in the first week. As well as the #OurStory initiative, we created a social media hub for the event to help drive social engagement. The campaign was an overall success, with social media engagement increasing by 50%.

The year’s most successful campaign was #TEAMWA2015, which supported the WA team traveling to Sydney for the 2015 Australian Junior Athletics Championship. Over the five days of competition over 30,000 people saw the content, with people engaging with the posts over 6,500 times.

As well as our social media campaigns, we have been able to activate social media and marketing opportunities for new and existing sponsors, such as the Youngs Holden Athlete of the Month, a program that has reached over 8,000 Facebook, Twitter and Instagram followers.

We look forward to working with our members and sponsors to help further our success in social media over the next twelve months.

Page 25 TARGET TALENT PROGRAM

The Athletics WA Target Talent Program (TTP) is a high performance pathway program funded and regulated in partnership with Athletics Australia. It is strongly aligned with the activities of the Athletics Australia High Performance Department and has been established to: • Be the early talent identification element of Athletics Australia’s High Performance Department as part of the AIS Winning Edge strategy; • Encourage the best young athletes in the State by inviting them to be part of the State level squad and participate in development activities; • Encourage the best local coaches by giving them the status and opportunities associated with being a State TTP Coach; • Create meaningful contacts between State Coaches and the best young athletes in the State and their personal coaches; • Create a national pool of identified coaches in each event group (e.g. State TTP Coaches for Sprints & Hurdles, Endurance & Walks, Jumps, and Throws) who can model best practice at the local level.

By identifying and engaging Western Australia’s best junior athletes and coaches through development opportunities, the 2014/15 TTP aimed to encourage athletes and coaches to achieve their potential and to represent Australia at youth, junior and senior levels. In 2015, this included the National U17 and U19 Squads, the IAAF World Youth Championships in Colombia (July) and Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa (September) for U18 athletes.

A total of 31 athletes were included in the 2014/15 AWA TTP program. The program focused on athletes born in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999.

Eight state TTP Coaches were appointed within four event groups (Sprints & Hurdles, Endurance & Walks, Jumps, and Throws) and acted as points of contact for TTP squad athletes and their personal coaches.

2014/15 Talent ID (TID) Program

The Athletics WA Talent ID (TID) Program is a high performance pathway program funded by the WA Department of Sport and Recreation and Athletics WA. It is strongly aligned with the activities of the Athletics Australia High Performance Department and underpins the national Target Talent Program (TTP). The TID Program has been established to:

• Be the early state-based talent identification element of Athletics Australia’s High Performance Department as part of the AIS Winning Edge strategy; • Encourage the best young athletes in the State by inviting them to be part of the Talent ID squad and participate in state development activities; • Encourage the best local coaches by giving them the status and opportunities associated with being a State Development Scholarship Coach.

By identifying and engaging Western Australia’s best junior athletes and coaches through development opportunities, the TID program aims to encourage athletes and coaches to achieve their potential and to represent Australia at youth, junior and senior levels. In 2015, this includes the IAAF World Youth Championships in Colombia (July) and Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa (September) for U18 athletes.

The 2014/15 TID program focused on athletes born 1995 – 2001.

State Development Scholarship Coaches were appointed within four event groups (Sprints & Hurdles, Endurance & Walks, Jumps, and Throws). Sixteen State Development Scholarship Coaches were appointed.

Throughout 2014/15, athletes who meet inclusion criteria and their personal coaches were invited to attend AWA TID Squad Days which incorporated a combination of relevant event group training clinics and both general and event-specific education workshops.

Each year this report is commenced with a paragraph highlighting the value of officials to the sport of athletics and again it is necessary to raise this critical element to our sport. Officials are the lynch pin which holds this sport together principally for the athletes to strive and obtain their personal goals. However, it is important prior to commencing this report to highlight that officials also have a personal goal, whether it be obtaining national or international appointment or just for the joy of being part of this sport.

With the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games fast approaching in 2018 the officials’ development pathway has played an important role in the education both theoretically and practically of our officials. Athletics WA is actively promoting and assisting our officials in their goal of achieving Commonwealth Games selection. The next round of National Championship events is significant for our officials to display their officiating and team work attributes.

During the past season Athletics WA has conducted in excess of 20 athletic competitions, including a number of multiple day events, which required the attendance of approximately 50 officials each day. This is a fantastic effort from our dedicated and unselfish band of officials. Athletics WA endeavours to provide as much comfort as possible for the officials during competitions but it is never sufficient or adequate enough to properly reward their contribution to the sport.

The education of officials is always crucial but prior to the Commonwealth Games selection process it is critical to ensure that our officials are on a level playing field with their interstate and international counterparts with whom they are competing. Selection for the Commonwealth Games as an official is just as competitive as for athletes and coaches.

Athletics WA’s Officials Education Officer, Fiona Brown, has for a number of years been assisting our officials to attain the requisite standard to best enhance their selection potential. During the past season 65 officials have participated in 12 education seminars covering a wide variety of athletic disciplines. Three officials have obtained the much desired Level 3 qualification standard during the past season.

This, combined with the work undertaken by Athletics WA with WA Little Athletes in educating Little Henri Courtis is a long serving Athletics WA Official. Athletics’ Officials is very encouraging

Page 35 OFFICIALS

for the future of officials in WA. During the first part of the 2015 -16 season Athletics Australia will be releasing the much anticipated Level 1 on-line education package, which will be available to educational facilities, Little Athletics and new Athletics WA officials. This program will not only enhance the skills of new officials but will have the flow-on effect of improving athletes and coaches through a better understanding of the rules and regulations governing the sport.

Athletics WA has once again provided the bulk of officials for Athletics Australia’s Tour meet in Perth, ‘The Jandakot City Track Classic’, proving that WA officials have the skill and ability to perform at a national level. This was supported by the number of WA officials who were selected to officiate at the Australian Junior Championships and Senior Championships by Athletics Australia.

Athletics WA’s officials are keenly sought by schools for their local and district school carnivals, particularly, photo finish and results services. Athletics WA has negotiated an improved rate of payment for officials and promoted the need for officials to be engaged directly via Athletics WA rather than the previous ad hoc arrangements.

Athletics WA is heavily reliant on the recruitment of volunteer officials to conduct weekly track and field competitions and out of stadia events. During 2015 and 2016 AWA will be hosting the following National and International championships; 1. Australian Junior Championships over 5-6 days 2. World Masters Championships over 12 - 14 days - 200 officials and an additional 200 field volunteers required.

AWA intends to start a recruitment program for officials, particularly for the World Masters by engaging a person to attend Regional locations encouraging country officials to attend the Championships who are already partially trained and experienced.

During February 2015, the WA Officials’ Club was incorporated but has yet to formalise the selection and endorsement of the committee.

Athletics WA will continue to promote and pugnaciously advance equality for officials with athletes and coaches in funding and development.

Page 36 GO FOR 2 & 5 CHALLENGE SERIES

As the aim of this Series is to introduce new athletes to senior competition which may involve some disciplines that are not offered at Little Athletics, it is important to conduct some transition clinics prior to competition.

Again the focus this season has been on High jump (Fosbury Flop), Starting Blocks, Javelin (heavier weight implement), 200 metre Hurdles (different number of hurdles), Steeplechase, Hammer and Pole Vault (completely new events for little athletes).

Not only did the connection with these events add new interests for some athletes, the coaches were able to offer continued instruction if requested, all assisting in the transition of athletes in the sport!

With the success of the previous Challenge Series since its inauguration in 2012/13, the Series this season was offered to all Little Athletic Centres to compete as a challenge for a place in the Grand Final.

There were three lead up qualifying events with three centres in each and was very well supported and free to the participants. Consequently there has been an increase in participation at the Strive competitions for these age groups coming through.

Each round attracted between 100-120 athletes with drink bottles and other promotional gifts being awarded to the athletes participating.

Next season the intention would be to offer these events again and introduce some “Come and Try” clinics in the “off season”.

With a 50% increase in numbers in 2013/14, and a further increase in 2014/15 this is proving to be a highly enjoyable competitive event. The athletes feel more confident to compete in the senior Strive competition as a result and parents are very supportive of the concept.

Page 37 GO FOR 2 & 5 INDIGENOUS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

This long standing program continues to promote athletics and the benefits of a healthy diet to the youth in remote and rural Western Australia. In partnership with Healthway and with support from Athletics Australia’s Athletics for the Outback Program, Athletics WA service a range of isolated communities and schools throughout the North-West.

Coordinated by Lindsay Bunn, this unique program is delivered by athletes coached by Mr Bunn as a requirement of being under his tutelage. The program was delivered throughout the Kimberley, Gascoyne and Pilbara regions involving just under 1400 children.

In the metropolitan area, the program focuses on the needs of the Culturally and Linguistically Disadvantaged (CaLD) children. There are six sessions per week available for squad participants which are held at McGillivray Oval, WA Athletics Stadium and the Balga Recreation Centre involving just under 1200 children attending coaching sessions on a regular basis.

Achievements • Developed a strong strategic partnership with indigenous sports organisation Garnduwa to promote athletics throughout the Kimberley Region. • Developed the Broome Senior High School Athletics Academy, signing a Memorandum of Understanding. • Successfully planned the promotion of junior athletics in Carnarvon and the Gascoyne Region involving a strategic partnership with the local PCYC and Carnarvon College. • Continued to develop good strategic partnerships with Garnduwa, Wirrpanda Foundation, Carnarvon PCYC, Carnarvon College, Clontarf Academy and Broome Senior High School, laying a foundation for a sustainable athletics programme well into the future • Broome Senior High School Athletics Academy now has 29 registered athletes with 13 of them having completed their Level 1 Athletics Coaching Certificate. • At WA All Schools Championships and WA State Championships the CALD/IDP Squad won 21 medals, including 8 Gold.

Page 38 CROSS COUNTRY SEASON

OUT OF STADIA

During the past 12 months Athletics WA has been fortunate to be able to further broaden our reach into the out of stadia arena. The 2014 – 15 season has been the most productive, to date, for AWA in promoting athletics and working in partnership with sponsors and other recognised not for profit organisations. Our Cross Country season continues to provide winter competition for middle distance runners but competition numbers remain fairly constant.

The following events were conducted by Athletics WA during this reporting period:

CROSS COUNTRY SEASON Perth Half Marathon State Championship

Athletics WA’s Cross Country season overlaps two annual reporting periods. This first event during the 2014 – 15 period was the Perth half marathon, which is one of several events conducted by the WA Marathon Club on our behalf.

The winners were:

Men: 1. Josh Tedesco 1 hr 07 mins 42 sec Women 1. Visnja Jareb 1 hr 23 min 25 sec 2. Francisco Sanzana 1 hr 11mins 49 sec 2. Kira Flanagan 1 hr 23 min 43 sec 3. Oskar Booth 1 hr 16 mins 22 sec 3. Katey Gibb 1 hr 23 min 50 sec

Josh Tedesco has now won this event for a number of years and it was great to see the close race amongst the women.

State Short Course Cross Country Championship

The next was the State Short Course Championship conduct in May at the Perry Lakes Reserve. The weather was great and runners exhibited some very exciting races. The results are as follows:

U16 Women 2k: K Nazaroff UWA, 7.13; T Chitty JTC, 7.42; G Toth JTC, 7.48 U16 Men 2k: L Pidcock MLV, 6.40; K Tibballs UWA, 6.42; B Williams C/BURN, 6.52 U18 Women 2k: T Cayley AWA, 7.52; Niamh Wilkins UWA, 8.23 U18 Men 4k: B Chamberlain UWA, 12.40; L Graves UWA, 13.11; K Metzner AWA, 13.32 U20 Women 4k: T Nazaroff UWA, 15.10; S Steinbeck JTC, 15.15; E Van der Meer JTC 15.23 U20 Men 4k: M Ramsden BHAC, 12.49; M Smith BHAC, 13.16; D Cecchi AWA, 13.18 Open Women 4k: J Jason UWA; 16.08; N Smith AWA, 16.25 Open Men 4km: C Dale AWA, 12.27; R Busi CND, 12.39

Competitor numbers in the younger age group are very encouraging but the senior events certainly lack depth. This in part can be contributed to the major community runs either side of the Short Course, which offered substantial prize money. Although in different age groups the race between Ben Chamberlain and Matt Ramsden enthralled the crowd gathered. Community road races are certainly having a big impact on the competitor numbers at cross country events.

Page 39 CROSS COUNTRY SEASON

State Marathon Championship

Hosted by the WAMC on Sunday 14 June 2015 on a two lap course along the Swan River, the race started early in the chill of the morning but finished on a glorious sunny winter day. Marathon running has become extremely popular and the attendance of runners and supporters certainly once again proved Western Australian’s love of running.

The men’s marathon was won by C O’Neil in a time of 2 hrs 31 mins and 6 seconds, followed by B Hart in 2 hours 40 mins and 26 seconds and in third was J Roberts 2 Hours 40 mins and 29 seconds. Chris O’Neil led from start to finish but a close tussle took place for second and third.

The women’s marathon was won by V Jareb in a time of 3 hours and 5 seconds, followed by R Lloyd in 3 hours 5 mins and 7 seconds and then C Oosthuizen 3 hrs 13 mins and 40 seconds. Visna Jareb had a comfortable win and took out the half and full marathon double.

The WAMC does an excellent job of hosting the marathon on behalf of AWA and the WA Masters.

State Long Course Cross Country Championships

The last out of stadia event for the season was the State Long Course Cross Country Championships held at the Perry Lakes Reserve on Sunday 28 June 2015.

Once again the weather was good for running and a reasonable attendance of competitors saw some exciting races. The junior age groups dominated the numbers with seniors’ events lacking the quantity of competitors. AWA senior middle distance runners have a raft of events available and for this event a number were competing overseas bypassing both the State and National Cross Country Championships.

Ben Chamberlain leading Matt Ramsden on the first of two laps, before breaking away in the final one kilometre for a sound win in his age group.

Page 41 BANKWEST GALLIPOLI RUN SERIES

Bankwest Gallipoli Commemorative Run Perth Sunday 19 April 2015

Athletics WA is privileged to be part of the Bankwest Gallipoli Run conducted annually the Sunday before Anzac Day in Kings Park. Athletics WA is honoured and proud to be part of a partnership between WA RSL, Legacy and Bankwest, particularly, this the 100 year remembrance commemoration of the Gallipoli campaign.

The 2015 Bankwest Gallipoli Run was once again blessed with great weather, which enhanced the beautiful and scenic Kings Park parklands. What a fantastic morning for a great run. Nearly 2000 participants gathered at the start line and participated in a very moving and poignant ‘last post and reverie’. At 7am the gun was fired and the runners streamed up the vista in a sea of Bankwest orange in the new special commemorative race shirt for the event.

With the permission of Botanical Parks & Garden Authority (BPGA) a new course was created, which provided an added scenic component to the race along Forrest Drive overlooking the Swan River. Athletics WA will be seeking approval for this course for years to come! The Bankwest Gallipoli Run in Kings Park brings families together each year in a community event that commemorates the ANZAC’s. The new more scenic course has been designed covering the 5 and 10 kilometre races for this special run.

The commemorative crosses project was an outstanding success and certainly added that special touch to the event. School children and participants were provided with the opportunity to be part of ‘The Australian War Memorial’ and ‘WA RSL’ commemorative cross project. Over 3000 white crosses were distributed to school students in WA and were placed in a unique spot at the start / finish area before being distributed alongside the Kings Park’s memorial plaques. The white crosses will then be distributed world-wide on graves of the First World War Australian soldiers.

The winners were:

Mens 5 kms Womens 5kms

1. Christopher Dale - 14 mins 02 secs 1. Natalea Smith - 17 mins 20 secs 2. Ben Chamberlain - 14 mins 11 secs 2. Kiarra Nazaroff - 17 mins 34 secs 3. Neil Berry - 14 mins 45 secs 3. Savannah Steinbach - 17 mins 45 secs

Page 42 BANKWEST GALLIPOLI RUN SERIES

Some fantastic results on a very fast course. Roberto Busi (No 2547) is now a four times winner of the event and has never looked like being challenged over the years. Christopher Dale (No 47) in the 5km event has now also put together a string of victories over the shorter distance throughout the winter program.

Generous cash prizes were presented to the winners along with new running shoes donated by The Athlete’s Foot Subiaco.

A very pleasing aspect of this event was the large increase in RSL members who participated following the lead of RSL President Mr Graham Edwards.

Volunteers started gathering at the race area at 5am and with the aid of some new and bright torches everything was ready to go at start time. A fantastic effort by a group of dedicated volunteers. The support of the local army cadets certainly lightened the load of the volunteers and special thanks to Eldon George for his tireless efforts in marshalling the cadets each Gallipoli Run.

A special mention to new sponsors for the 2015 Perth Gallipoli Run, The Sunday Times and Channel 9 – a great effort much appreciated by all concerned. Finally in concluding a very special thank you to Bankwest and the Bankwest team who have provided extraordinary support for the ‘Cause’ which have enabled a considerable donation to be made to WA RSL and Legacy each year.

Page 43 BANKWEST GALLIPOLI RUN SERIES

Bankwest Gallipoli Commemorative Run Bunbury 7 September 2014

This event was our first Regional run of the Bankwest series and was conducted as a trial for future events. The event was held deliberately on this date, ‘Father’s Day’, to honour all the fathers who fought in the Gallipoli campaign. A fast and scenic lap course over 4 kilometres was designed, which highlighted the ‘Cut’ at the Port of Bunbury. The race started and finished at the South West Water Based Activities centre. The co-operation and support of the local community groups was fantastic. AWA would not be able to host regional events without the support of local community groups, athletics groups and local Government. The Bunbury Port Authority willingly allowed AWA to conduct the event within the Port Authority and co-ordinated additional parking facilities for entrants on private land.

The weather was threatening for most of the week but Sunday morning other than a big bit of wind the weather was kind. The event was started with the last post and reverie and off went the competitors.

Competitor numbers were very pleasing for a first time event in Bunbury and certainly bodes well for the future. It was noticeable that it was very much a family event with a sprinkling of competitive runners.

The winners were: Mens 4 kms Womens 4 kms

1. Chris Owens - 12 mins 53 sec 1. Courtney Butlion - 15 mins 26 sec 2. Zac Jones - 13 mins 56 sec 2. Hayley Gulberti - 18 mins 06 sec 3. Bailey Taylor - 14 mins 04 sec 3. Emma Innes - 19 mins 12 sec

Bankwest Gallipoli Commemorative Run Albany October 2014

This event was specially requested by the City of Albany to coincide with the special 100 year commemoration of the World War 1 fleet departure from Albany. Although not originally scheduled AWA were very happy to oblige the City of Albany. The City of Albany was still going through its transformation for the commemoration ceremony, which required adjustment to the proposed course in April 2015.

The event started on a windy morning on the southern side of Mount Clarence before finishing at Middleton Beach in glorious sunshine. Competitor numbers were very encouraging and with the special commemorative shirts created for the runs, displaying the WA RSL logo, the race was a visual parade of Bankwest orange.

Perth based runner Ethan Heywood put a fine display of tough front running easily winning the 8 km race and astonishing locals at his level of fitness and speed.

Page 44 BANKWEST GALLIPOLI RUN SERIES

The winners were as follows: 8km Men Women

1 Ethan Heywood Liana Annison 2 Jack Dunn Tracey Moss 3 Adrian Marchesi Stevie Donohue

4km Men Women

Presentations were made to all place getters and with the new sponsorship from The Athlete’s Foot Subiaco all winners received a pair of new running shoes as well as prize money.

Bankwest Gallipoli Commemorative Run Albany April 2015

Sunday 26 April 2015, the day after Anzac Day in Albany, approximately 220 participants took part in the Bankwest Commemorative Gallipoli Run. The percentage of entrants who competed against those that entered was almost 100 percent, which clearly shows the determination of the community of Albany. The Bankwest Commemorative Gallipoli Run is a community run and this was certainly on show in Albany with participants of all ages, shapes and sizes competing.

After a long day before, commemorating the courage and sacrifices of all our service men and women in the Gallipoli campaign, run participants made a personal physical sacrifice by competing in either the 5km or 8km race.

The event started this year in the new Stirling Terrace precinct under the large inflatable Bankwest arch at 8am. The day started off cool but slowly warmed up to a magnificent sunny Albany day.

Page 45 BANKWEST GALLIPOLI RUN SERIES

The new start line presented the 5km participants with a long gradual hill to start with before entering the undulating Scenic Path along the base of Mount Adelaide and finishing at Middleton Beach. The 8km participants had the more daunting challenge of running half-way up Apex Drive Mount Clarence, a very very steep incline before the downhill run to the Scenic Path.

It was great see local participants take the major places in all event classifications. The 5km race was won by Lachlan Hansen (male) and Christine Murray (female) and the 8km by Jacques Contier (men) and Andrea Campbell (female).

The race started as a sea of orange with participants wearing the Bankwest shirt and ended with a sea of orange with participants sitting in the coffee shop adjacent the finish drinking and socialising with friends and family. Well done Albany.

A special thanks to all the local volunteers and the Athletics WA team who set-up and officiated at the event.

Major sponsor Bankwest must again be applauded for the courage to host this event in Albany during this special commemoration of War World 1 campaigns.

Bankwest’s GM Customer Communications Nichole Banks and Wayne Loxley present a cheque to RSL President Graham Edwards.

Page 46 GO FOR 2&5 CROSS COUNTRY AND RACE WALKING CHAMPIONSHIPS

2014 Go for 2&5 Australian Cross Country and Race Walking Championships

Each year a different state is allocated by Athletics Australia the opportunity to host the Australian National Aged and All Schools Cross Country Championships (the titles). Western Australia last hosted the event in 2007 at the Perry Lakes and Reabold Reserves in Floreat. All previous events hosted by WA have been metropolitan based with the preference either Perry Lakes or Kings Park.

In 2014 Athletics WA accepted the challenge to conduct the event in Regional WA and with the support of the local government the event was awarded to the City of Albany. The Great Southern Grammar hosted the major championship events on the Saturday, with Walks at Middleton Beach on Sunday and the Australian All Schools Relay Championships on the Monday at the Albany Race Course.

The titles were conducted in August 2014 and competitors, support personnel, families and officials arrived at the location a minimum of two days prior to the first day of racing and departed the day after the last competition. Opportunities were provided for local athletes to participate, outside the normal qualifying standards, resulting in heightened community involvement.

Prior to and after the competition day the event received wide local media coverage with AWA staff regularly promoting the event on the ABC regional radio and via local news outlets. This, combined with local educational and local Government activities strongly promoted the Go for 2&5 message to the Albany community.

The 2014 Go for 2&5 Cross Country and Race Walking Championships was an outstanding success for all concerned and resulted in significant local, State and National media involvement.

Approximately 1200 competitors, including 65 para-athletes, took part from all around Australia and New Zealand. Combined with supporting staff and families a further 2000 – 2500 persons attended during the competition weekend resulting in substantial commercial and social benefits for the town.

AWA athletes represented the State of WA with great pride and success but the performance of Amy McCormick in winning the Australian Under 20 women’s race against a strong field was the standout performance for WA.

Page 47 GO FOR 2&5 CROSS COUNTRY AND RACE WALKING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The sheer joy and relief of winning the Australian Under 20 Women’s Title is evident in the photographs taken of Amy crossing the finishing line.

Setting the standard for the performance of the WA team was Jackson Hamilton’s performance in winning the boys 11 years para-athlete race. A fantastic first up result for WA.

The performance of WA athletes was the best for many years with the senior men’s team of Joshua Tedesco, Scott Tamblin, Ethan Heywood and Christopher Dale finishing second and the senior women’s team of Kate Fitzsimons, Ariane Huston, Lauren Shelly and Hannah Castle equalling this result. This would be a first for WA! Other notable performances were Kate Fitzsimons winning the Under 23 Australian women’s title and Ethan Heywood finishing second in the men’s event.

Amy McCormick and Matthew Ramsden (Third under 18 men) both went on to represent Australia at the World Cross Country Championships in China.

Not to be outdone WA walkers also achieved some outstanding results on the Sunday competition. The continued success of Declan Tingay winning the Under 16 5000 metre walks provides great optimism for the future of walking in WA. It is worth noting that the 2014 Go for 2&5 Australian Cross Country and Race Walking Championships hosted by the City of Albany was a great success commercially for the Albany community and resulted in arguably the best ever result achieved by a WA team.

Premised on the outstanding success of Athletics WA’s involvement in Regional WA and with future support from Healthway a great potential exists to promote the health message directly to the broader Western Australian community in events of this nature.
