I study their taxonomy using traditional microscopic and histological techniques and their genetic interrelationships and systematics using ribosomal DNA sequences. I also investigate the effects of extrinsic factors on aquatic environments by using parasite prevalence and abundance as a proxy for total biodiversity in aquatic communities and for assessing food web dynamics. I am also interested in the epidemiology of viral diseases of crustaceans. The Bathymetric Distribution of the Digenean Parasites of Deep-Sea Fishes

The bathymetric range of 149 digenean species recorded deeper than 200 m, the approximate depth of the continental shelf/slope break, are presented in graphical form. It is found that only representatives of the four families Lepocreadiidae, Fellodistomidae, Derogenidae and Hemiuridae reach to abyssal regions (>4,000 m). Three other families, the Lecithasteridae, Zoogonidae and Opecoelidae, have truly deep-water forms reaching deeper than 3,000 m. Bathymetric data are available for the Acanthocolpidae, Accacoeliidae, Bucephalidae, Cryptogonimidae, Faustulidae, Gorgoderidae, Monorchiidae and Sanguini- colidae showing that they reach deeper than 200 m. No bathymetric data are available for the members of the Bivesiculidae and Hirudinellidae which are reported from deep-sea hosts. These results indicate that only seventeen out of the 150 or so digenean families are reported in the deep sea. Study of the digenean parasites of deep-sea fishes has lineation of deep-sea records in the context of the data- been spasmodic and scattered. Bray Department of Life Sciences, The Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, SW7 5BD, UK ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Keywords: The developments in the study of digeneans of deep-sea fish in the 21st Century are documented and discussed. Deep-sea Most recent work has been on the bathyal fauna (i.e. 1,000m-2,999 m depth), with virtually nothing on the Digenea abyssal fauna (i.e. deeper than 3,000 m). The one study on hydrothermal vent digeneans has indicated that these Teleosts regions probably harbour a distinctive fauna. The demarcation of the deep-sea fauna is blurred at the poles, Abyss where the cold-adapted fauna appears similar to the shallower bathyal fauna. The abyssal fauna, however, Bathyal appears distinct, possibly due to adaptations to variable or ultra-high pressures. The digenean fauna of bath- Diversity ypelagic fishes is depauperate. Recent phylogenetic studies reinforce the view that the typical deep-sea faunahas radiated in the deep-sea. Encroachment into the deep from shallow water is relatively rare. Overall, the digenean fauna in the deep-sea is distinctly less diverse that the equivalent fauna in shallow waters. A major conclusion is that our understanding of the deep-sea digenean fauna is poor, and that much further work over a much wider area is needed. 1. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract An integrative taxonomy approach is used to characterise the diversity of gorgoderid trematodes that parasitize freshwater fishes of the subfamily Goodeinae in central Mexico. Records of Phyllodistomum sp. and Dendrorchis sp. from the urinary bladder of goodeines have been previously published, although the identification at species level was not achieved. A few specimens were collected and fixed to conduct a scanning electron microscopy study, and to obtain sequences of a mito- chondrial (COI) and nuclear (28S rRNA) gene, to be analysed in the context of the molecular phylogeny of gorgoderid trematodes. Based on the new findings, two new species of Phyllodistomum Braun, 1899 are described. Phyllodistomum cribbi n. sp. was found in Zoogoneticus quitzeoensis (Bean), Allotoca zacapuensis Meyer, Radda & Domínguez- Domínguez, Hubbsina turneri de Buen and Z. -

Morphological analysis of the Gorgoderidae specimens revealed characteristics resembling the sub-species Plesiochorus cymbiformis elongatus rather than the Plesiochorus recently synonymised Plesiochorus cymbiformis. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of the ITS2 region also showed Plesiochorus cymbiformis that P. c. elongatus was distinct from P. cymbiformis and related taxa. Further analysis of the ITS2 revealed sub- Plesiochorus elongatus stantial differentiation between P. cymbiformis from the USA and Brazil and the newly sequenced P. c. elongatus from Brazil, while a previously unspecified Plesiochorus sp. from the USA closely related to the novel Brazilian P. c. elongatus was reconciled as a USA isolate of P. c. elongatus. Based on both the morphological and molecular data it is suggested that P. c. elongatus should be referred to as Plesiochorus elongatus and be considered as the second species in the genus. -
