  • The Last Days of Judas Iscariot
THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT BY STEPHEN ADLY GUIRGIS DIRECTED BY DAVID VEGH C A S E W E S T E R N RESERVE UNIVERSITY // CLEVELAND PLAY HOUSE MFA ACTING PROGRAM DECEMBER 2 - 6 // ONLINE PERFORMANCES DEAR FRIENDS WELCOME to the CWRU/CPH MFA Acting Program’s first remote production,The Last Days of Judas Iscariot by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis. The Class of 2022 has adjusted to a very different training model since last March, with the majority of their classes transitioning to remote experiences. Despite the unforeseen challenges and continuous adjustments, our training continues, discoveries are made, breakthroughs occur, and productions — which serve as the application of training — take place. Last spring, the cohort performed its dress rehearsal of Middletown, giving a heartfelt single performance for an invited audience, only to learn within hours that Cleveland Play House was forced to close its operations due to the growing pandemic. This fall, our students have the chance for their work to be seen by a wider audience beyond Cleveland, which might include friends and family who might not have had the chance to see them perform otherwise. The class also has the opportunity to grow more comfortable with filmed media which, along with live theatre, will hopefully be part of their futures. The upcoming spring will see recruitment of a new class, and that too will happen in a different fashion with preliminary auditions taking place remotely. We will see once again hundreds of candidates from across the country and increasingly from across the world.

  • The Woman Behind the Anthem: the Late Helen Reddy Was Simply "Mum" to Traci Donat - She Shares Her Life Story
The woman behind the anthem: The late Helen Reddy was simply "Mum" to Traci Donat - she shares her life story Elaine Lipworth © Provided by Bauer Media Pty Ltd The late Helen Reddy's daughter Traci Donat speaks about her mother's legacy in an article published by The Weekly just weeks before Helen's death. UPDATE: A few weeks after this article went to print in the October 2020 issue of AWW, Helen Reddy passed away aged 78. Taking to her official Facebook page, Helen's children, Traci Donat and Jordan Sommers, confirmed her death in a statement. This article, from her daughter Traci's eyes, pays tribute to the iconic singer's legacy. Dazzling in a flowing magenta gown, Australian singer Helen Reddy's smile was equally bright as she strode on stage to accept the Grammy Award for her global hit, I Am Woman, on March 3, 1973. Having beaten out stiff competition in the form of icons Barbra Streisand and Aretha Franklin, the 31-year-old thanked her husband, Jeff, "because he makes my success possible". Then, without missing a beat, she continued, "And I would like to thank God, because she makes everything possible". Polite applause followed, but many in the crowd were visibly shocked. The televised ceremony was held in Nashville that year, the traditionally conservative home to country music, and the atmosphere in the city's Tennessee Theatre was tense. For while the singer's words, spoken with conviction, delighted her fans, not everyone appreciated them. Courageous and audacious in equal measure, Helen, who was the first Australian to win the prestigious award, had earnt a place in music history.

At the newspaper's height, circulation was approximatly 18,000 copies. The original editorial collective included Denis Lemon (editor), Martin Corbett - who later was an active member of ACT UP, David Seligman, a founder member of the London Gay Switchboard collective, Ian Dunn of the Scottish Minorities Group, Glenys Parry (national chair of CHE), Suki J. Pitcher, and Doug Pollard, who later went on to launch the weekly gay newspaper, Gay Week (affectionately known as Gweek). Amongst Gay News' early "Special Friends" were Graham Chapman of Monty Python's Flying Circus, his partner David Sherlock, and Antony Grey, secretary of the UK Homosexual Law Reform Society from 1962 to 1970. Gay News was the response to a nationwide demand by lesbians and gay men for news of the burgeoning liberation movement. The paper played a pivotal role in the struggle for gay rights in the 1970s in the UK. It was described by Alison Hennegan (who joined the newspaper as Assistant Features Editor and Literary Editor in June 1977) as the movement's "debating chamber".
