  • The Evolution of Malaysian Cartoon Animation
THE EVOLUTION OF MALAYSIAN CARTOON ANIMATION Faryna Mohd Khalis Normah Mustaffa Mohd Nor Shahizan Ali Neesa Ameera Mohamed Salim [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT A cartoon can be defined as an unrealistic style of sketching and or funny figures that can make people laugh. Aside from entertainment purposes, cartoons are also used to send messages without a serious tone and indirectly telling something sarcastically. In April 2019, Malaysia was shocked by the headline that ‘Doraemon’ had been selected to represent the Japanese themed cartoon exhibition in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2020. Malaysian art activists, specifically those who has a cartoon animation background, were very upset and expressed their dissatisfaction with the news. Local legendary cartoonist Datuk Lat also showed his disappointment and made a stand that a local cartoon character should have been chosen to represent Malaysia. Therefore, this research aims to illustrate the development of Malaysian cartoons from when they first started in newspapers, until their existence today in the form of animation on digital platforms. In sequence, Malaysia produced cartoons in newspapers, magazines, blogs, television and cinema, whereby this is in parallel with the development of technology. From hand- drawn art for ‘Usop Sontorian’ to digital animation for the film ‘Upin dan Ipin’, Malaysians should be more appreciative and proud of our local cartoons rather than those from other countries. Keywords: Local identity, Characteristic, Animation, Comic, Character design. Introduction Cartoons are fundamentally known as entertainment for kids. But due to cultural values, technological development and education, our cliché perception has changed to that cartoons are actually a source of effective communication for all ages (Muliyadi, 2001, 2010, 2015).

But before reaching stardom, every one of them went through intense trainings for years. FIGHT FOR SUCCESS Produce X 101 is a popular reality TV programme in South Korea. The show allows viewers to explore how trainees fight their way to become K-pop successes. To qualify as the show's 11 finalists, 101 trainees from several music labels were required to team up to perform as a group, but as individuals they still had to stand out in order to gain votes from Korean viewers. During the show, all trainees were guided by professional singing and dancing coaches who helped enhance their skills. Since 2016, Produce X 101 created four famous temporary pop groups: I.O.I, Wanna One, IZ*ONE and X1. Kongthap Peak, an aspiring actor from Channel 3 and singer from Chandelier Music, was the only Thai trainee who had participated in Produce X 101's latest season, which ended in July.

The research methods included documentary analyses and interviews with mass media scholars, TV station executives, and advertising agency representatives. Most of the popular TV programs at present are copyright shows purchased from overseas, in the forms of purchases of the copyrights of finished programs as well as the copyrights of format programs; most of which were game shows, reality shows, and drama series. The characteristics of the international trade of the TV programs in Thailand included (1) trade of TV programs in the content market, (2) exchanges of TV programs between Thai and international TV stations for broadcasting, and (3) international co-productions of TV programs. Three factors that influenced TV stations in Thailand to purchase foreign TV programs were (1) changes in technology, (2) changes in consumer behavior, and (3) business survival. Therefore, the international trade of TV programs is another solution for TV stations and TV program producers in Thailand to reduce production costs, increase revenues, and expand the audience base worldwide.

  • Competitive Dynamics in the Online Video Streaming Industry
STREAMING WARS: COMPETITIVE DYNAMICS IN THE ONLINE VIDEO STREAMING INDUSTRY Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics Master’s thesis 2020 Authors: Korhonen Aleksi & Rajala Janne International Business & Entrepreneurship Supervisor: Lamberg Juha-Antti ABSTRACT Authors Korhonen, Aleksi & Rajala, Janne Title of thesis Streaming Wars: Competitive Dynamics in the Online Video Streaming Industry Discipline Type of work International Business & Entrepreneurship Master’s thesis Time (month/year) Number of pages 06/2020 118+3 Abstract Digitalization and advances in technologies have changed the world in the past few dec- ades. This has affected consumer behaviour and developed new, more dynamic, indus- tries as well. As a result, competition is fiercer than ever, and competitive advantages are only temporary. This thesis builds on the literature of strategic management and compet- itive dynamics by exploring the competitive interaction of companies in the Subscription Video-on-Demand industry. We seek answers to how competitive advantages are pur- sued within the industry and how the strategic decisions of the companies differ from more traditional industries. To answer this, the press releases of several publicly listed U.S. based SVoD companies were collected and analysed through qualitative content analysis. After that, the connec- tions between the competitive actions were linked through event structure analysis to un- derstand how rivalry affects the companies within the industry. The results show that in contrast to traditional industries, competition in the growing SVoD industry revolves around content, which is enforced through resource building, co- creation, and to some extent, market expansion.
