The year started with a significant change to the way we register players, and the methods of payment, with an impact on players, club officials, and BWHA staff. Discussion and decisions around the use of the IMG database consumed much time and effort, until the way forward was clear and agreed. It highlighted the need for us to be able to communicate changes clearly with members, and the need for multiple ways to do this. Our winter fixture season was as busy as ever, with the following activity: • Ran hockey fixture competitions for juniors, seniors and masters, at four turf venues and two grass venues, for over 3,300 registered players. Player numbers have increased marginally over previous years, with growth in junior numbers making up for the slight decrease in senior numbers. • Sent 20 teams to compete at State Championships for Super League, Opens, U18, U15, U13 and Masters as well as 4 teams competing in the U11 Southern Cross at Downey Park. We have seen an increasing number of complaints arising from sideline spectator behaviour, and will need to work more closely with clubs in the coming year to manage this better. It is not, and cannot be, the sole responsibility of BWHA management committee to police sideline behaviour – clubs must manage their spectators, reinforce good behaviour, and deal with bad behaviour. We all need to work together to do this more effectively. We continue to work with Brisbane Hockey Association (BHA) and Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club (KWSHC) to administer the Brisbane Hockey Management Group (BHMG), which manages the Burringbar turf facility. The increasing age of this facility and its infrastructure, together with the ever-increasing costs of water and electricity, means that insufficient funds are able to be retained for future turf replacement, and alternate sources of funding will need to be sought. Part funding secured for a second turf is also at risk if proposed grant submissions are unsuccessful. The popularity of Hockey Zone, with the filming of hockey games, and coaching and umpiring techniques and skills, continues to grow, and thanks to Paul Mills and his team for their commitment and dedication.
