5 2014 BWHA Annual Report PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Every year brings its unique rewards and challenges, and 2014 was no exception. It has been a credit to all members and staff of our association that we have managed to deal with them all, and in doing so continue to successfully run the largest hockey association in Queensland.

Our winter fixture season seemed busier than ever, with the following activity:

• Ran hockey fixture competitions for juniors, seniors and masters, at four turf venues and two grass venues, for over 3,200 registered players. • Sent 20 teams to compete at State Championships for Super League, Opens, U18, U15, U13 and Masters as well as 4 teams competing in the U11 Southern Cross at Downey Park.

Numbers were down for our summer outdoor social competition, and this may reflect the increasing interest and availability of summer indoor competitions, and/or busier lifestyles. However, where possible we will continue to offer a variety of summer hockey programs. We continued to work with Brisbane Hockey Association (BHA) and Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club (KWSHC) to administer the Brisbane Hockey Management Group (BHMG), which manages the Burringbar turf facility. The increasing age of this facility and its infrastructure, together with the ever-increasing costs of water and electricity, means that sufficient funds are difficult to retain for future turf replacement. This may well cause us some further challenges in years to come.

The popularity of Hockey Zone, with the filming of hockey games, and coaching and umpiring techniques and skills, continues to grow. With the increasing cost of showing content on TV, the alternative providers Aurora and Bris31 were utilised this year, as well as ongoing use of YouTube. We were again able to film JT games thanks to the generosity of Powell Industrial, and we welcomed our new Division 1 sponsors White Lady Funerals.

We persevere with our efforts to construct turf fields at Downey Park. This year we commissioned a Feasibility Report, and we are trying to complete the additional reports required as pre-requisites for a Development Application.

The appointment of Regie Fisher as Member Development Manager and Amy Ryan as Development Officer has signalled a change of focus in member development to work with players across all age groups, and umpires. The success of these appointments is evidenced by the positive feedback we have received from a wide range of members.

It would be remiss of me though, to not flag with you all the particular challenges we also face:

• Our volunteer base is shrinking, not just at association level, but also at club level. It seems that many believe that “BWHA should do it”, perhaps not realising that they are themselves BWHA. This was particularly evidenced this year in that we could not form a junior committee – but the positive that came out of this is that a workable, improved alternative was found.

• The cost of playing hockey is still rising, and will continue to do so while we increasingly have to pay people to perform roles that were done by volunteers in the past. Added to

6 2014 BWHA Annual Report this are the ever-increasing costs of water and electricity which particularly impact on the turf hire costs.

• Getting messages and requests out to members remains a challenge. We will continue to use tools such as Facebook, email, SMS texting and websites to communicate news, information and requests as widely as possible.

• Spectator involvement – we need to remember that we all play the game of hockey for enjoyment, and that we rely on volunteer umpires and officials to support this. They all deserve our respect. This year we introduced a Duty Manager at Downey Park Saturday morning fixtures to assist with fielding queries and following up concerns – and we will continue this practice into 2015.

Whilst the year has been hectic we can be very proud of our achievements, and the way we have reacted to opportunities and challenges. I would particularly like to thank all the members of my management committee for their efforts, consideration, passion, and good humour. To our dedicated volunteers at club and association level – thank you, because without you we would not be able to exist. And last but certainly not least, my sincere thanks to Kath Proctor and all the BWHA staff for their ongoing support and tremendous work effort.

Dr Karin Walduck

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Planning for two synthetic surfaces at Downey Park has continued this year. This process has now been underway for almost three years and is probably looking as positive as it can given the difficulties of the site at Downey Park. Flooding, landfill and amenity issues are being resolved with a view to developing a final concept that will go to Council for a development application. All going well it is hoped that a DA will be lodged in early 2015.

An application has been made to the Queensland Government under the ‘Get Playing Plus’ funding scheme. We have requested the full amount to construct two turfs (up to $4 million) on Downey Park. Outcomes of this funding scheme should be known late 2014 or early 2015. We are also meeting with the Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing, the Hon. Steve Dickson, in early November to discuss funding for an upgrade of Downey Park (which will also include the turfs). This meeting will also include Downey Park Netball Association and Brisbane Softball Association with a view to master planning the park into an international standard facility with contemporary facilities.

It has been another long year planning and lobbying for the additional turfs and we cannot grow our competitions until we have more turf availability. I’d like to recognise some hard workers who have helped BWHA out on this project to date either at no cost or at minimal cost. Their contributions are noted and very much appreciated. They include: Tony Battams (Solaris Designs), Tony Loveday (RMA Engineers), Rob Kirkwood (STI Polytan) and Hannah Tohill (Wolter Consulting Town Planning).

I hope by the end of 2015 that we have something much more substantial to report and perhaps even some action on construction on the park.

Christine Blanchard

7 2014 BWHA Annual Report SECRETARY’S REPORT

As our 2013 season concluded, much was happening in the background at BWHA. After 15 years BWHA’s Regional Director of Coaching (RDC) Sharyn Simpson left our employment to pursue other challenges in hockey. Sharyn’s extensive hockey knowledge and unique understanding of the size and structure of BWHA would be hard to replace. We cannot thank Sharyn enough for her hard work, talent and expertise and we wished her well for the future.

BWHA Management looked at the RDC role and with Hockey Queensland also looking to update their coach network structure; we took over the major employment responsibility of this role, with HQ now only providing financial support through the State Government funds for coaching staff. Interviews were conducted and Regie Fisher was appointed to the new position of Member Development Officer (MDM). This is a fresh position creating opportunities for all members of the association. Regie has brought a new energy and enthusiasm to this position and provided many new and multi-levelled opportunities for BWHA members in 2014, well done Regie.

To compliment this position a fulltime Development Officer (DO) was appointed – Amy Ryan. The DO’s role was expanded to include umpire development an important area of our sport in urgent need of support. With funding from the State Government’s “Get Going” Grant Scheme we were able to provide many umpiring development initiatives in 2014. Amy worked with Lesley Bennett and the Umpire and Technical Committee to improve opportunities and development of our umpires. Thanks Amy, Lesley and committee for your work in this area.

The Annual General Meeting was held in November 2013 and while well attended, a number of important positions were not filled. We had no nominations for a Junior Committee and many selection committees remained incomplete. The Management group remained stable and welcomed new member Kris Birch to the Team.

Kris took on the important “Volunteer Management” role and has been working in the background in 2014 to understand the problems and requirements of the many positions in BWHA. She is working on position descriptions and procedures to assist our volunteers in the future. Thanks Kris for your enthusiasm and commitment in 2014, we look forward to your continued work in this area.

While everyone asks “what do we do” in the off-season, I can only advise we in the BWHA Office are busy all year round. While the weekly fixture requirements may have concluded the planning, bookings and preparations for the following season keep us all well occupied from October to January each year. Calendars, forms, budgets, tour bookings, development trials and training programs as well as summer hockey, schools and fields and equipment maintenance form the biggest part of our workload during this time. Management meet about 30 times a year to make decisions and create the strategic directions for the association, and it is the small number of dedicated year round staff who work in the background to support our volunteers. Thank you to Sue, Lisa, Regie, Amy, Noala and John for all your hard work, good humour and support.

8 2014 BWHA Annual Report In December a small Christmas Party was held for Staff, Management and Life Members to thank them for their hard work throughout the year. To keep the costs as low as possible this event is held at Downey Park and self- catered, so thank you again to the staff for making this possible. The office traditionally closes for 3 weeks over the Christmas – New Year period but Noala and John continue to work on the grounds during this period.

The BCC Australia Day Sport Award was won by Sonya Fisher in January 2014 a fitting reward for all her hard work for BWHA. She is the current Treasurer managing our finances and sourcing grants to supplement our income, has worked constantly to engage and network with our local politicians, is the BWHA Liaison for Hockey Zone, umpires and does technical duties at the highest level as well as holding a full time job that requires constant travel. In this busy world, busy people can and still do put their hands up to volunteer. Thank you Sonya for all your hard work.

Hockey Zone was again a great marketing tool for hockey, thanks to Paul Mills for his drive, enthusiasm and talent to grow and improve the show. Thank you to all our sponsors especially White Lady Funeral who came on board this year sponsoring our Division 1 competition and Powell Industrial who do so much for our junior development. Play Works, Just Hockey and Brisbane Money Management also continue to support hockey and we sincerely thank them.

Following feedback from our members a new website was completed in January ready for the new season. The web site was designed to be more readable on smart phones and user friendly to find information. The web site was well received with minor adjustments made during the year. Unfortunately in September this year the company who built the site folded and we are working to ensure the facility remains up to date and usable for the future. Lisa in our office also worked with Michelle Dunning on Management to create a workable facebook page. In this modern time this is possibly the best tool to distribute information. Our facebook page is “Brisbane Wmns Hockey”, why not add us and get all the latest information. Thanks Michelle and Lisa for all your work with improving communication with our members.

Our first Council Meeting in January was well attended and the Administration Folders given out. It has been decided this will be the last year a physical folder of all forms will be given out. The electronic age makes this paper form redundant. Calls were put out to try and fill the vacant volunteer positions for 2014, unfortunately with very little response.

The Hockey Australia – IMG Database came back online in February and was supposed to have corrected the many problems we have experienced with the databases. Alas this was not the case and the database continues to give us major grief. Sue Barsby is as well-trained as any person in Queensland on the database and to say at times she has been totally exasperated, would be an understatement. Thank you to all clubs and members who have worked with Sue to get all members online. We hope some better reports will be available in 2015.

In February Hockey Queensland (HQ) appointed a new CEO and welcomed Louisa Begley to the fold. BWHA has by necessity a close relationship with HQ, as the major user of the State Hockey Centre and the largest association in Queensland. Louisa has in her short time at the helm faced some major challenges and we wish her well in all pursuits.

9 2014 BWHA Annual Report Our working bees in March were interrupted by rain and so some clubs did tasks at the end of the season to fill their obligations. Thank you to all clubs for their support with this. We only have two casual staff looking after the 15 fields at Downey and Rasey Park and we cannot possibly get all the work done without volunteer support. This year Andrew Brodie volunteered to assist with the weekly mowing and Ange and Kris whipper snipped to support our maintenance schedule – many thanks for your efforts. Thanks to Meg and her workers paid and volunteer for all your hard work in 2014. Unfortunately we received very little rain during the season and the fields did dry out, despite the best efforts of the grounds committee.

It was determined in March with no Junior committee to run fixtures, that all Junior matters would be dealt with by the Management Committee and clubs would be rostered on each week to fill the many and varied functions required to make hockey happen at Downey and Rasey Park each week. And while this seemed daunting to start with, it did provide some bonuses. With each club rostered on, they learnt what happened behind the scenes, the workload was spread and ideas and suggestions to improve things were provided. A “Pink Bib” Duty Supervisor role was introduced to walk the fields at Downey & Rasey Park to try to encourage adherence to rules and correct behaviour by all using the park. Unfortunately we still have a number of people who do not understand that sport is for fun, fitness and friendship, for the most part run by volunteers doing the best they can. The only real downside was that BWHA Management – 9 women who already carry the highest voluntary workload for the association now had another role to play – supervising on Saturday mornings. Thanks to all Management but special thanks to Kris, Meg, Deb, Lesley, Jenny and Christine who carried the bulk of this workload and Bronwyn Morris from Norths who also assisted as a Supervisor throughout the year. Thanks Bron.

Our other constant challenge was the Canteen, without a convenor it looked destined to be a significant added workload to our volunteers. Karin Walduck (President) and Sue Barsby (Staff) got us underway, but thankfully Dom Sanders came on board as the convenor and what a success she was. As a player she left for her game each afternoon, but she ensured everyone was organised and prepared in her absence. We also had some amazing junior staff (many hockey players) who did a great job in our two canteens. It is so essential to have our canteens fully operational and making a profit. All money generated goes back into our sport. We would love Dom to return as convenor in 2015, but we appreciate this is a long day when you are playing, so if you know anyone who may be interested in this position please let me know. Thank you to Karin and Sue for your support of the canteen and Olivia and Abby who acted as supervisors when needed. To improve stock control and money management new scanning cash registers were purchased for the Downey Park Canteen in 2014.

In 2013 we also said goodbye to long time Saturday Administration Assistant, Charli Hawson. Charli finished her studies in 2013 and found fulltime employment. We were pleased to welcome Joanne Harten to this position in 2014. This is a demanding role, answering questions, giving directions, entering results on the database, opening and closing the facility. Well done Joanne on filling this role and thank you to Lorraine Carroll who filled in when Joanne wasn’t available.

The turf fixtures commenced in March following gradings, and the grass fixtures in April. Thank you to Jenny Heron and Deb Wark from Management and the Fixture and Grading committees of all levels for your hard work. It is never easy, and not everyone can be pleased when difficult 10 2014 BWHA Annual Report decisions need to be made. The start of the season was very disrupted especially for the turf with School holidays, Easter, then Open, Masters, Schoolgirls and Super League Tournaments – the season was very stop, start. Clubs have indicated that they wish to play through these dates where turf is available in the future and clubs will need to utilise players from lower teams to fill up to allow this to happen.

Last year Denise Byrne finished her long association as the bar attendant at Downey Park, she is such a character, an outstanding sports woman and valuable member of the BWHA family. Thankfully Ian Watt and Mary McNeil offered to step into the position and looked after the bar most weeks of the season. It is disappointing to have such limited use of the facilities on a Saturday. We need to get the message out to all seniors who play at Downey Park – the clubhouse is yours and you are welcome to come upstairs, have a drink (water/softdrink/it doesn’t have to be alcoholic), have a snack and/or simply sit down with your team and have a chat after the game. You are most welcome.

When Netball commenced their season the parking became a major issue with two very large sports (hockey & netball) using the same area. We have held talks with Netball and the BCC to try to come up with some solutions for the future. We will try to open up the vacant blocks on Northey Street to allow for more parking and the BCC are planning to do some traffic management in the area to improve the traffic flow. We appreciate this is a major concern to users of Downey Park and we will continue to work with all stakeholders to improve the situation.

As mentioned the early part of the season was very busy with the Open’s Tournament, then the Masters and then the Super League. In amongst this was the State U18 and U15’s and the Southern Crosses for U13 and U15 and Schoolgirls. The selectors, coaches, managers, umpires and development staff all had a very busy time. Thank you to all involved - Regie, Amy, Sue and Maria for organising uniforms, equipment, payments and all tour requirements. And to our volunteer officials we could not provide these development opportunities to our members without you – thank you.

June saw our U13 & U15 teams attend state championships and acquit themselves very well. The U11 development and selection process began ready for the U11 Southern Cross at Downey Park. Each year we ask for your assistance to give our players opportunities to develop. We need coaches, managers and umpires to allow all teams to compete at State Championships. Please consider what you could do to assist us in the future.

During the year “themed” Council Meetings were held to discuss issues of major importance to clubs. These included juniors and umpiring – we hope to have more themed meetings next year to allow member clubs to have their say on what direction they want the association to take. A meeting was also held to discuss the trial “Points Cap” system introduced in 2014, this trial will continue in 2015.

We unfortunately held 3 Judiciary’s in 2014, thank you to the members who provided their time to sit on these panels. It is important in this day and age to remember sport is for fun and while being the best you can be is important, the volunteers who run the sport do the best they can and respect and adherence to the codes of conduct and the rules of the game are essential for 11 2014 BWHA Annual Report all to enjoy our great game. Special thanks to our Hon Solicitor for all your assistance and wise counsel during the year.

August again saw BWHA (with BHA) host a most successful U11 tournament. What a wonderful day and congratulations to all involved. Once the U11 Southern Cross is held we know the end of the season is approaching, the U7 & U9 carnival and the semi-finals. This is an exciting and anticipated time. Thank you to the umpires who officiated all year and special congratulations to those selected to umpire during the finals series. While you may not always feel supported and appreciated, we cannot have a game without you and you are our most valuable asset.

After 18 months we finally saw the shed erected behind the clubhouse to house our major grounds machinery out of flood level. The bulk of money to pay for this was through a Disaster Mitigation Grant from the State Government $25,000 received in 2013 and BWHA put $12,000 towards the projects, this grant also covered the replacement of the canteen benches to stainless steel and the conversion of the development equipment cupboard to cages under the clubhouse. Thank you to the state government for their support with this. It was disappointing that it took so much time and money to gain BCC approval to erect this shed, but it is now up and getting full use before the wet season starts.

Christine Blanchard continues to work through the process to get 2 artificial turf fields at Downey Park. Downey Park is the home of women’s hockey in Brisbane and like our neighbours Netball and Softball who also call Downey Park home, this is a unique venue that caters for thousands of women playing sport every year. We need first class facilities to continue to grow in our sport. Christine is working through every hurdle thrown at her and we could not wish for a better advocate and leader to see this project through to completion. Thanks Christine for your dogged determination.

Thank you to our Archives Committee for continuing to document and catalogue our long and proud history. And thank you to our Life Members who continue to assist the association in so many ways.

Our President Karin Walduck continues to lead our association and the Management group with vision and practical initiatives. We are lucky to have such an accomplished leader. Thank you Karin for your support and work for BWHA. It is often work behind the scenes that no one knows about, but is ultimately for the benefit of hockey and we thank you for it.

Congratulations to our members who have celebrated the many joys that life can provide in 2014, for those that have suffered loss or heartache, know that your hockey family is here to support you.

While our association continues to grow, the demands to provide professional style service on a volunteer sport budget is constantly under pressure. We always keep uppermost in our decisions and planning the objects for which the Association was established:

• to foster, promote, manage and control the game of for women and girls throughout the Brisbane area and in any other surrounding districts which from time to time become affiliated; • to plan, develop, construct, maintain, manage and promote the use of facilities for the 12 2014 BWHA Annual Report development and playing of the sport of hockey; • to identify, select, train and educate all talented members in all areas of the sport of hockey.

We cannot always provide everything people want or demand, all we can do is the best we can for the majority of our members. We need your support to continue to provide this.

Thank you to our many members past and present who have given of themselves to make BWHA what it is today. Every single person can contribute simply by being part of the solution and not the problem.

Thank you to BWHA Management for your outstanding service to BWHA and to the BWHA staff who work above and beyond what is expected of any employee, all for the love of the game.

Kathy Proctor

TREASURER’S REPORT

I would like to again acknowledge the work done by the BWHA office and in particular, Kath Proctor, that has allowed the continued smooth operation of the Association. The Association is very professionally managed and it is a credit to our hard working staff. This is highlighted by both the completion of the Financial Statements in a timely and satisfactory manner and the continued strong financial position of the Association. Well done ladies!

A summary of the 2014 Financial Performance of the Association follows: • Net Assets decreased slightly to $723k • Income fell slightly to $ 1.323m • Expenses increased slightly to $1.322m (wages increased by $13k and there was grant expenditure of $5k) • Profit was also slightly lower at $1.4k • Grants o We will continue to submit grant applications wherever possible, to assist in replacing assets, upgrade facilities, improve operations and deliver sustainable solutions for the Association. o In 2014, we lodged two grants: . Qld Govt (Get Playing) – $73k – irrigation and levelling of Rasey Park and Field 13 . Qld Govt – $4m – two artificial turfs for Downey Park o And we were successful with one grant . Qld Govt (Get in the Game) - $10,000 – to fund the new Umpire Officer role

VOLUNTEERS

BWHA identified the need to increase the level of skilled volunteers in 2014. BWHA formed the view that the limited information about the requirements for each volunteer position may have caused confusion and deterred people from volunteering. In an attempt to resolve this confusion, draft job descriptions are being developed and it is hopeful that this will result in a higher level of volunteers. A brief description of the Junior Committee positions were circulated with this year’s nomination forms and we have seen a limited increase in volunteer nominations. Notably, we have a nomination for the 2015 Junior Committee.

BWHA did not receive any nominations for the Junior Committee in 2014. As a result, BWHA decided to restructure the roles to increase the level of participation by Clubs. This involved a Club being rostered on for a morning to assist with the set up and Match Secretary tasks. As a result, there was an opportunity to educate participants about the roles that need to be 14 2014 BWHA Annual Report performed and allowed people to experience the roles before nominations for the 2015 season opened. BWHA ensured that an Official was present on each of these rostered days to provide support to the Clubs and the volunteers. Much positive feedback was received from volunteers that participated in their clubs rostered day. This restructure was a great success and BWHA have decided to retain the new structure for the 2015 season.

The presence of an Official on each of the clubs’ rostered days enabled a review of the existing structure. As a result of this review, some Junior Committee positions have been split to ensure that the role is manageable for volunteers and it is hopeful that this will encourage an increased level of volunteer participation.

BWHA conducted a brainstorming session to identify ways in which volunteer participation could be recognised and rewarded. Many great suggestions were made and BWHA will continue to consider ways to recognise and reward volunteers in 2015. Letters of appreciation will be sent to BWHA volunteers by the end of the 2014 calendar year.

BWHA intends to advertise vacant roles on community notice boards, and within University and TAFE environments early in 2015. In addition to this, BWHA will consider advertising vacancies in local newsletters and newspapers.

BWHA recognises that there is still much work to be done to increase the level of volunteer participation. It is hoped that the continued work in this area will eventually produce the desired results.

COMPETITIONS: FIXTURES & GRADING

TURF

After lots of meetings and liaising with clubs in the lead up to the 2014 season we saw the introduction of the points cap system, which affected clubs that have teams involved in the Division 1 - 3 competition.

Despite the few clubs who were initially not in favour of the caps most agreed that it had little effect on their players this season. The objective of the points cap system is to have a better balance of players in the BWHA competition.

All clubs agree we need a real focus on player & coach development to ensure our top level competition remains competitive. BWHA management and staff are continually working to achieve this and with positive support we can make this happen.

We held a meeting at the end of the season to reflect on the impact of the points cap during this season. No clubs were directly affected by it and the cap system did not deter any players from nominating to represent Brisbane and Queensland in any age level.

The 3 year club loyalty is a very short period of time and we are not sure of the impact this will have on clubs and players until we get a chance to test the system. 15 2014 BWHA Annual Report

The representative players from 2014 will be noted in the caps during the 2015 season and continually monitored to ensure clubs comply.

We struggled with momentum to the seasons fixtures due to the timing of Easter, school holidays and games not played because of championships, there were also a few games washed out and needed to be rescheduled. The Division 1 competition also had a bye this season and whilst this helped with the draw and scheduling club days it did have an impact on the flow of the games being played. We have taken this on board and next season there may be games played when there are championships on, however we need to remember that when they are held in Brisbane we share the facilities with the men so the turfs are not always available.

Clubs enjoyed having their Div 1, 2, 3 games following each other where possible to encourage club support at games, where possible the women and men's teams worked together to schedule games at the same location. The only drawback is this makes it very difficult organising umpires and clubs having to umpire their own games.

Thank you to Liz, Di and Robyn who took on the Turf Fixtures Committee. They were all new to this role. It is a tough job scheduling rotation of time slots, venues etc. and trying to accommodate the many requests we get from clubs regarding scheduling of games throughout the season.

Thank you to the Grass Fixtures Committee; Lesley, Glenda & Kate and the Masters Fixtures Committee; Lesley, Petra & Pam. We are fortunate that a few of these ladies have done this role before.

Congratulations and thank you to all the players and officials who make a positive contribution to our sport.

DOWNEY PARK – GRASS

This year a total of 44 teams affiliated with BWHA for the Downey Park grass competition. Based on information supplied by clubs and final positions in 2013, the grading committee again dispensed with grading games and placed the teams in eight team divisions in DP1- DP3, and ten team divisions in DP4-DP5. A late withdrawal from DP2 left that division with only 7 teams. By playing fixtures on the June long weekend, an extra double header weekend and an abbreviated knock out semi-final series, DP1, DP2 and DP3 played three rounds of fixtures during the season, with teams in DP3-DP5 playing two rounds of fixtures.

BWHA reaped the rewards from the installation of irrigation to fields 10, 11 and 12 with these fields in fantastic condition for the 2014 season. They were consistently in use each week by seniors, particularly since fields 2 and 9 were unusable. This created a few headaches for the fixtures committee. We nearly made it through the season without any disruption due to wet weather. Heavy rain in the week prior to the last round of fixtures for DP1-3 and first round of semis for DP4 and 5 and on the Saturday meant that games had to be played the following Sunday to enable the season to be completed as scheduled. 16 2014 BWHA Annual Report Thanks to the grading committee of Judy Hartnett, Kate Oudenryn and Lesley Bennett, and the fixtures committee of Kate Oudenryn, Glenda Street and Lesley Bennett for their tireless work during the season.

MONDAY MASTERS

The Masters Fixtures Committee again faced the challenge of only 4 teams willingly nominating for MM1 this year. This small number of teams was not enough to provide an interesting competition. With 8 teams nominating for both MM2 and MM3 the committee decided to combine MM1 and MM2 for the first half of the season and then split the teams into 2 divisions of 6 teams based on their ladder positions. Thank you to all Masters’ players for continuing to provide a wonderful competition for players 35 years and over.

COMPETITION: OPERATIONS

UMPIRES

It was another big year for BWHA umpires. There were no nominations for the role of turf umpire steward, so the task of umpire allocations for the turf was filled by Kath Proctor, who, as secretary of BWHA already has a huge job keeping our association running. Both Kath and Judy Hartnett, the Grass umpires steward, did a tremendous job with the umpire allocations, an often thankless task given the dwindling number of people putting up their hands to willingly umpire. With 25 turf games each fixture weekend and 22 grass games it was a huge task to find umpires for the 18 weeks of fixtures, plus finals. Without umpires there wouldn’t be any games. Thank you to all umpires for giving their time to ensure the fixtures can go ahead. The annual rules paper was again held in May, the aim of which is to improve players’ knowledge of the rules. As this is an open book test players should take the opportunity to sit in groups to discuss and complete the paper. Groundwork has been done this year in the hope that the Rules Paper will be able to be completed online in 2015.

This year a large number of fines and suspensions were issued to umpires who failed to appear for their umpire allocation. While the fines provide an unexpected source of income, the failure of an umpire to turn up for their game often results in the teams missing out on match time while an umpire is located.

This year Jan Hadfield conducted 2 rules talks for turf umpires and Bernie Pangrazio delivered 2 rules talks for grass umpires. These sessions are always entertaining and informative, where the rules are explained using practical demonstrations. All clubs were invited to send along the coach and captain of each team and umpires from the club. The dreaded own goal was removed from the rules this year, which was a relief to many goalkeepers.

17 2014 BWHA Annual Report BWHA continued with automatic 2 min green and 5 min yellow card suspensions throughout all senior games including those at Downey Park.

Congratulations to all umpires who were successful in attaining a HockeyEd practical assessment or an upgrade of an existing qualification.

TECHNICAL

BWHA again this year had paid qualified technical staff on Turf games instead of rostering clubs each week. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful job of keeping the games running efficiently and on time.

The U&TC, which consisted of Ronda Nix, Lesley Bennett, Cheryl Kann, Lyn Thomas, Christina Nipperess-Sims, Judy Hartnett and Caroline Schomberg, met regularly throughout the season. Thank you for volunteering your time.

TURF UMPIRES’ STEWARD’S REPORT

In 2014 the office resumed the role of allocating umpires to senior turf games. This is a complex task that impacts all levels of the association. With clubs requesting that teams play consecutively ie Div 3, 2, 1 together with no breaks, this meant many Div 2 & 3 games where umpired by their own club. As with many things this did have its pros and cons, clubs quickly discovered that some people on their umpires register were not up to the division they had indicated and umpiring pathways were reduced as those who played in a division often could not umpire at that same level. But clubs have indicated they prefer this, to splits in club timeslots.

Thank you to the senior umpires of the association, both those who are members and those who are from other centres who assist our association with umpiring and in return gain the benefit of higher level games and coaching. These senior umpires assisted in finding last minute replacements due to illness and injury during the season and I thank you for this. BWHA continues to have the invaluable services of Jan Hadfield at many Div 1 – 3 games during the season to coach and develop our top level umpires. Thanks Jan for your continued support of BWHA. Thanks to the umpires who mentored and coached umpires during the year; special thanks to Lyn Hill and Sonya Fisher for your assistance during the year. We have some clubs who are doing an amazing job of supporting and developing umpires, but unfortunately there are many clubs who aren’t. Clubs are the only groups that can make a real difference. BWHA through its DO and Umpires and Technical Committee can give advice and assistance, but clubs need to make it happen.

18 2014 BWHA Annual Report

GRASS UMPIRES’ STEWARD’S REPORT

Allocation of umpires each week

As BWHA Grass Umpire Steward I allocate umpires from the umpire registers that clubs provide at the start of the playing season. Standard practice is that if clubs change the allocations the BWHA office needs to be notified by 12pm on Friday. This year the BWHA office has then circulated the amended draw with changes to the umpire allocations on Friday afternoons. It was not unusual for 30-50% of the allocations made by the umpire steward to have changed. This occurs because:

• I try to have the draw with umpires allocated available 3-4 weeks ahead of the scheduled fixture to allow clubs time to communicate with umpires and for people to plan ahead. In this time, allocated umpires can become unavailable for a number of reasons e.g. injury etc. • The allocated umpire has no intention of umpiring and they (or a club co-ordinator) find someone to fill in for them – usually for a fee. This reason is discussed further below..

Clubs need to supply suitable umpires for the number of games they have teams playing in. If umpires do not complete their allocation the consequence is a fine and suspension – of the named person. One way to manage the possibility of a fine and suspension at a club level is to name players in turn. The onus is on the named player. Many clubs have an umpire co-ordinator who assists with this process. From an umpire steward perspective this is frustrating. It takes time to allocate the number of umpires needed (in 2014 this was 22 each week) as care is taken to ensure the umpire allocations do not clash with playing commitments, known absences etc. When the name on the register is not the person doing the allocation this time is wasted. It would be more efficient to know who will be doing the umpiring and select an allocation to suit them. Many times this season the allocation given to the person on the club register did not suit the regular substitute requiring further organising at club level.

As Grass Umpire Steward, I would prefer the Club Umpire Register to only include those who are likely to fulfil any allocations given rather than a list of players. This would mean if clubs want to share the responsibility (and the possible consequences for missed allocations) among all players that would be managed at a club level. Clubs without experienced umpires to list on their register from among their players will have a problem but that problem must exist already. Many clubs are working on umpire development. Addition of new umpires to the club umpire register could be a culmination of such development. Improving the status of umpiring would be beneficial across the Association.

Allocating umpires for finals

This year the umpiring committee struggled to find suitably experienced umpires for the grass semi and grand finals. Many regular umpires were playing in finals but the overall number of 19 2014 BWHA Annual Report suitable umpires was limited. The umpire registers were full of names but many were not umpires or they could umpire but didn’t umpire all season even if allocated. If clubs listed only their suitable and available umpires on their register there would be an enhanced list of umpires to choose from for finals. There are regular umpires whose names only ever appear on the updated draw each Friday.

Development of grass umpires

There is currently a shortage of umpires for fixtures at Downey Park. The same people regularly umpire each week which results in a depth of experience in a small number umpires but limited breadth and opportunities for development of umpires. Most umpires at Downey Park are players, mostly grass and some turf players. Naming players on the umpire register to take their turn could be seen as a form of umpire development. It can be if the inexperienced umpire is provided with a suitable mentor. If not, the teams who end up umpired by the inexperienced, unsupported player are disadvantaged and the respect between players and umpires is undermined. I believe the most likely source of extra umpires for grass is juniors. A meeting was held this year where this was discussed and I am sure the Umpire and Technical committee report provides further ideas about this topic.

Recommendations:

• Clubs only name players who are likely to umpire on their Grass Umpire Register. • Modification of the Club Umpire Roster to include a grass umpire contact and to remove player phone numbers which are a pain to fill in and as umpire steward I never use. I would prefer to work through a club co-ordinator. (Suggested modified form attached)

COMPETITIONS: RECORDING & REPORTING (MATCH SECRETARY REPORT)

TURF I took on the role of Turf Match Secretary for the first time in 2014 as I was having a year off playing hockey due to being pregnant but still wanted to be involved in hockey and the Association in some way. I knew that this role was hard to fill and was a very valuable one to the Association. I had to find my feet quickly. I had to create new templates and formulas in Excel for keeping track of the 16 clubs and 50 senior turf teams’ players. At the beginning of the season I had to check over 620 player registration and types across the clubs and teams. During the season, the final numbers for turf players reached over 650. Going through team match sheets and cross- checking registrations of players for over 600 players every week took from 4 to 8 hours depending on how well the clubs had filled in their match sheets and if they had registered players on the day at the tech bench. The total number of combined senior reserve and turf

20 2014 BWHA Annual Report reserve players that were used was over 230 players, with some clubs using nearly 25 additional players for their turf teams during the season, which also had to be checked weekly (players who played 5 or less games who were either a junior, grass or masters player). These 230 players had to be added to each club and checked during the season to ensure they did not become full time players in two competitions (this is the number of players who did not reach 6 or more games, a large number were changed during the season from reserves to full time in two competitions which are reflected in the overall player numbers). Due to the large scale of players to check every week and mark off if they played 1 game or more, BWHA changed the way the match sheet was to be completed by the clubs to make it quicker and easier for myself to cross-check the data. This change required clubs to place their registered players in alphabetical order followed by the substitutes in alphabetical order at the bottom of the registered players list. This then brought the weekly volunteer hours down to 2 to 4 hours each week. I believe this also benefited clubs as it meant they could quickly add subs to the bottom of their match sheet and not have to worry about it being alphabetical by all players who took the field; being a hockey player and coach I know that subs can change within 5 minutes of the start of the game so having this new flexibility with the match sheet was easier. As the season came towards the end nearly every club and team was completing the forms correctly and it made mine and the BWHA staff’s job much simpler. Before the finals began, I had to check players games played and supply teams who were in the finals with the number of eligible players who could compete. This allowed clubs to know who could take the field before their matches. Once the season was completed I also created a final club numbers spread sheet for Management to show how many players each club had used during the season and the type of registrations.

I would like to thank the teams who every week got their match sheet correct, or very close with only 1 or 2 errors occasionally and to the clubs who registered players before they took the field at the tech bench or emailing the correct forms to BWHA prior to the weekend. Your effort on game day made my job so much easier and I am very thankful to you. Thank you to some great club secretaries who chased up missing paperwork or registrations in a timely manner. Clubs need to ensure that they register players at the tech bench prior to players taking the field as it makes the match secretary role much simpler – when a player is not registered, or registered correctly as per the BWHA notes on what type of registration they are, we do not know if they are full-time, casual or from another section of BWHA and it makes the volunteers like myself at the club, as well as BWHA staff have to try and find this out during the week causing extra work for all involved. Clubs also need to de-register players if they are no longer playing – having to de-register players because they haven’t played took a lot of effort in the spreadsheets used and extra work for the BWHA office so if clubs can be proactive in 2015 and de-register players who are not returning it makes a big difference to the Association and its volunteers. Clubs also need to pass on the information directed from BWHA to all team coaches and managers, as some clubs had managers or coaches fill in the form differently across their teams.

I would also like to thank the BWHA staff and volunteers for their assistance. To Kath and Lisa in particular, thank you for answering my rule questions, chasing clubs, and just being a huge help overall! It was great to have some serious chats and some laughter with you during the year.

Having worked full-time and being pregnant in this role I would like to thank BWHA for the opportunity. I would also like to encourage anyone else who is a hockey player and having year 21 2014 BWHA Annual Report off due to injury, illness or pregnancy to nominate for a BWHA position from match secretary, selector, to manager or coach of a Brisbane team. It is a very rewarding job and you have excellent support from BWHA staff and volunteers. This role would also suit any mums, dads or grandparents out there who have a few spare hours each week. I had no idea what I was doing to start with but picked it up with great support so please don’t think you can’t volunteer because you haven’t done anything like it before because if I can do it you can too!

GRASS There were very few issues in the grass competition this year and clubs are to be congratulated on their cooperation in ensuring players are registered appropriately before they play.

DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT

MEMBER DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (MDM)

It is with great honour that I write my first Member Development Manager report for BWHA. I was appointed to this position in November 2013 after our long time and highly respected RCD Sharyn Simpson resigned moving on to continue building on her vast coaching experiences/roles and travels. BWHA took the opportunity to revise the role and with much credit, dedication and hard work by Kath Proctor and the Board of Management, moulded the position of MDM to best benefit the greater hockey community that forms BWHA. With over 3200 members the opportunity to work with as many of them as possible was a challenge that I couldn’t wait to start.

In a nutshell it has been an experimental year for BWHA and the Development department, we have continued with our traditional and successful programs and have trialled some exciting sessions ranging from Goal Keeper skill development for beginners to advanced, Masters & Senior Grass Development programs, various workshops and a new off season Strength and Conditioning program affectionately called “Smashfit”. Our programs have been supported by some really positive, eager and professional people, such as Steve & Angie Lambert, Nikki Taylor, Clare Comerford, Emily Burrows, Mick Evans & Tony Comerford. 2014 was personally a very rewarding year with many people advising their gratitude for BWHA recognising their various needs or member groups.

Our Junior development and representative programs continued to grow this year, with 4 teams competing at each age Tournament/State Championships U11, U13, U15 & U18 (U15 had an additional 7 players released to Tweed 2). Each team achieved creditable results in 2014. Growth in general amongst nominees was very exciting and in particular the increase in Junior GK numbers was both very overwhelming and exciting with 12 GKs nominating for U13 Selection trials, 10 for U15 selection trials and 7 for U18 selection trials. I am sure that this increased interest in Goal Keeping was a testament to the high coaching quality provided at club level, the 22 2014 BWHA Annual Report positive experience that kids are having within their teams and the additional development opportunities available to support them. The majority of our dedicated representative Coaches this year were accredited level 2 coaches who to their credit provided a high standard program and a dedicated off field team supporting our players. I hope that many more coaches will take the initiative to obtain their level 1 and or Level 2 accreditation in the future, and set a goal to create their very own rewarding representative coaching experience. I must also personally thank the many QLD representative players who have helped grow the “give back culture”- many of you have attended various programs and have definitely motivated and inspired our younger players. In 2015 I look forward to seeing tournaments such as the Open State Championships and Southern Cross League evolve into successful events.

I would like to thank the Kedron Wavell Services Club who granted BWHA a $2500 “Community Investment Grant” to support our development initiatives.

Finally I would like to congratulate all players on their relevant selection for Brisbane, Queensland & Australia, with additional junior state teams sent to National Tournaments more players are gaining valuable exposure to a higher standard of play and development.

I would like to thank the BWHA Management Committee and the enthusiastic and dedicated staff of BWHA for their commitment to their roles and applaud them on their input into the growth of the Association this season. I once again look forward to an exciting 2015 season, and would like to wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas.

Regie Fisher

REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (RDO)

2014 was a year that saw a lot of exciting changes to the Development Department here at BWHA and I was very excited to commence my role as RDO.

The U7 & U9 “Rookey” Competition welcomed Tara O’Kane to the Co-ordinators role, and welcomed back Athleri Cross (First Aid) and Grahame AKA “Mr Doppio” (Doppios Coffee). It is always a pleasure (and a relief) to have their commitment to the competition. The competition itself was a success, with a massive (21) U7 teams and (32) U9 teams. We were very thankful to be joined by our QLD U15 Representatives, as well as Brisbane Representative Coaches as our Guest Coaches for the Skills Day. We even featured in a brief segment on Junior Development on Hockey Zone.

Unfortunately the U7 & U9 Carnival this year was cancelled due to weather concerns. Thank you to all club volunteers who assisted with their duties throughout the season. Often a thankless task at the time, but always appreciated by staff to receive your support.

The U11’s were exposed to yet another U11 Development Clinic which spanned over 2 weeks. Thank you to all coaches who assisted during those early mornings. We received positive feedback to the new format in which we delivered the program, which will help us to improve development opportunities in the future. The Development Clinic gave a number of these U11’s new skills and concepts which they enthusiastically brought into their representative trials. We had a healthy pool of talent throughout the trials, and we’d again like to congratulate all who were selected in teams that competed at the U11 Southern Cross Tournament. As 23 2014 BWHA Annual Report always, we appreciate the assistance from our volunteers and selectors, without their efforts we wouldn’t be able to give these players the opportunity to represent the Association.

The U11 Southern Cross saw 4 Brisbane teams compete across 3 divisions. Brisbane 1 finished 1st in Division 1, Brisbane 2 finished 2nd in Division 2, Brisbane 3 finished 3rd in Division 2 and Brisbane 4 finished 3rd in Division 3. All teams had great fun during the March Past joining in on the #ROOVOLUTION craze, an initiative from Hockey Australia supporting the Hockeyroos at the World Cup. The successful day would not have been possible without the extraordinary efforts from BWHA Staff, team coaches, team managers and volunteers.

I was very thankful to be a part of each representative age group this season in a number of ways – selecting, coaching, managing or delivering development programs. I look forward to seeing our Association’s talent develop further and anticipate many more triumphs in the future. The revision of the RDO role allowed a focus on umpiring development this season. Clubs had the opportunity to host an Introduction to Umpiring Clinic at their clubhouse for their members, or alternatively BWHA members could attend an open clinic on Saturday mornings at Downey Park. As always we hosted Umpiring Talks, specific to both turf and grass umpires. Many of the attendees from the development clinics went on to umpire regularly throughout the season and obtained Community or Level 1 badges – a very successful outcome.

I look forward to continually improving the opportunities and development programs for BWHA umpires, and refining the umpiring culture.

TOURS, UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT REPORT Uniforms Officer Report

In my first year as Uniforms Officer all uniform allocations and apparel sales ran smoothly thanks to great support and assistance from Sue Barsby and BWHA staff.

All allocated uniforms were returned (2 unaccounted for). A few needed minor repairs but these were easily completed.

Apparel sales - to both Masters and Junior teams – were steady. Some stock was depleted but was ordered in time to meet needs.

The use of electronic records was successful – with room to increase/improve this aspect, maybe by using a laptop during uniform allocations.

Thank you to Jenny Tidey who filled in when I was away. Thank you also to all the team Managers who assisted with uniform and apparel fittings.

FACILITY AND DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO REPORT

2014 was a successful year from the perspective of the grounds staff as we achieved a long standing goal of building a big green shed. It is large enough to put a goal box inside and work on it with still lots of room to swing a cat. All our precious equipment especially the 2 Toro mowers 24 2014 BWHA Annual Report will now be safe from floods and the general ravages of the Brisbane climate. The shed will be fitted out as a workshop so we can do repairs and maintenance to the equipment protected from the elements. The old shed went under water with as little as 3 centimetres of water.

This year we have had little rain in contrast with the last few years of floods. We have not used field 2 and 9 for seniors as there were some large bare patches. Fields 10, 11 and 12 have stood up to the additional work due to the irrigation that we put in last season. This is a good indicator of the value of irrigation for our fields. To this end we have applied for a grant for irrigation for Rasey Park.

This year we joined the Sports Turf Assn and have learned much from their field days. It is valuable to talk to other people doing similar work on sporting fields.

My huge thanks to Noala and John who both go beyond the call of duty to ensure the fields are suitable for the players. They never grumble and just get on with the job at hand whatever it is.

Below is an article that I wrote for the Sports Turf Assn newsletter regarding our work at BWHA;

The task of maintaining 15 hockey fields (15 ha), on a land fill, in a flood corridor, whilst sharing the lease on a six month rotation, is somewhat complex and challenging. This is exacerbated by lack of funds to employ staff and purchase equipment and chemicals. As a member of the Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association management committee I was pleased to be given the facilities portfolio in 2011 as I love Downey Park and have played there since 1991. I have no skills as a groundskeeper just a love of the sport and am a bit of a gardener.

For an inner city park Downey is big; 12 hockey fields plus a large number of netball courts. Fringed by trees and backing onto Breakfast Creek, it is used by the locals for walking and playing. At the weekend hordes of women and girls descend onto the park to play sport. My role is to have the fields suitable and safe to play hockey from April to September and then handover to softball. BWHA has 50 senior teams, 74 junior teams, 32 U9s and 21 U7s playing each week.

The Facilities:

Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association shares the lease of Downey Park with Brisbane Softball and has an exclusive lease over Rasey Park. This in itself adds to the complexity of maintaining the park, as both sports have different requirements as to the length of grass and the various lumps and bumps we both need to play the game creates problems at handover. Downey is a land fill site, that when the development as a park was completed, was designated as exclusively for women’s sport. BWHA has a large brick clubhouse built in 1985 which contains offices and canteen. At Rasey Park there is a small canteen and upstairs there is storage for uniforms for our representative teams.

We have water on field 1 and since last year 3 other fields are irrigated. The council has plans to remediate 6 fields but have not given us a date so planning is difficult. Mowing is no longer a problem since we bought our Toro mowers. Initially we had 2 old ride-on mowers that went under water in every flood. We now have a Turbo diesel 72inch and a smaller with grass catchers for field 1. Jeff at the Mower Superstore in Lawnton helps us keep them working. I often mow Rasey Park which takes 2 hours in summer as there are no goal boxes on the fields and 4 hours 25 2014 BWHA Annual Report during the season. The mowers are kept in a shipping container on the one small piece of land that does not flood. Our sheds continue to flood on a regular basis. The sheds contain all our equipment other than the mowers and blowers.

We also lease Rasey Park which has 3 full fields and 3 small ones: uneven and overhung by the neighbours’ trees. Council have just removed 3 old jacarandas and plan to put in some shade trees. We are now working with the compliance division of council to ensure that the trees are trimmed. There are places where we cannot drive the big Toro.

Challenges:

Funding: Our major challenge is funding as we rely mainly on member subscriptions to fund our work. Since accepting the task we now employ a lady as supervisor who is paid to work 10 hours a week but does another 10 at least on a voluntary basis. She is knowledgeable as she has a certificate in Horticulture. She is assisted by our super ‘groundsman’ who has all the skills necessary to fix ‘stuff’ and understands grass. Unfortunately we can only afford him 8 hours a week. The challenge is that I cannot employ them for more hours.

The other issue around funding is the cost of chemicals. We have every weed known to man and some unknown but they remain and grow. We have just purchased a spray boom and a fertiliser spreader. The plan is to fertilise in January (when softball are not playing) then weed spray the 3 fields with irrigation. We are aiming to have the irrigated fields able to take the extra work load when the other fields are closed for remediation.

Flooding: Downey Park is in a flood plain with the added problem that Brekkie Creek originally flowed round the park. In the 1950’s the creek was straightened and the area filled. A gully runs through the park with the runoff from Wilston Hill and surrounding areas. Our flooding comes from this gully, particularly at high tide. We also get runoff from Table Tennis as their down pipes run straight on to the park.

Fixtures: My team also has the job of refurbishing the goal boxes. We have 48 across the 2 parks and cost $5000 a pair. We are also responsible for the building maintenance and all other equipment, for instance the golf buggy for the first aid people and so on.

Our Solutions:

In 2011 the flood was extremely expensive for BWHA as we then moved our offices upstairs in the clubhouse at a cost in excess of $100,000. Our insurance covered equipment but not the cost of the move. Almost everything we owned was destroyed by mud and water. We recognise that we cannot stop the flooding but we can protect ourselves and be prepared for the inevitable flood. To do this we bought 2 shipping containers as a temporary measure prior to building a shed/workshop on our only piece of high ground. We are currently awaiting approval to our DA by council.

Dreams: We have dreams of building an artificial surface at Downey Park but at this point we are tied up with council. I also want my shed/workshop so the guys can work refurbishing goal boxes and doing what groundsmen do in the shed. We hope that the remediation will bring irrigation so we can deal with the weeds and other nasties lurking in the grass. 26 2014 BWHA Annual Report Reality:

This year my budget was increased to $50,000 which included wages. The shed funding is separate. Downey will continue to flood, but if we go back into drought conditions then irrigation becomes vital. Before the drought broke in 2008 we were close to cancelling fixtures. We got through and then it rained and flooded 3 times. Downey Park is the real picture of Australia “a land of drought and flooding rains”.

In writing this I note that I have said little about grass/weeds/spraying/fertilising but currently our main issues are structural in that; when are we being remediated, when will council approve our shed DA. From the point of view of the Sports Turf Association we are at the bottom end of the skill ladder but have the desire to know more and do more.

CANTEEN CONVENOR’S REPORT

It was a busy but fun year in the canteen for 2014. A couple of new faces joined the team this year quickly coming up to speed on how we operate. Generally we were always kept very busy in the mornings with juniors and netballers and the afternoon eased off with an easy flow of customers. As expected the Southern Cross Tournament was the busiest day of the year.

Abby Nicholls and Olivia Barsby both stepped up this season to fill the Supervisor roll when I was away. Katie and Sarah Dean also did an exceptional job every Saturday afternoon when I left the canteen for 2 hours to play hockey.

Overall it has been a successful year with a friendly and capable team in the canteen.

ARCHIVES REPORT

This year has been a very quiet time for the Archives Committee (due to unforeseen circumstances – Moving House, health issues etc.)

We are still open to hockey members (including past members) joining this Committee to become familiar with what is entailed in having Archives for the Association. Archives never stop receiving photos, mementos, badges, (both cloth and metal) or anything to do with Brisbane Women’s Hockey. Always ask before throwing anything away if it would be suitable for our Archives.
