My fellow officers, directors, and I would like to welcome you to the 2019 Conductors Guild National Conference. Any event in New York City is bound to be an exciting experience, and this year’s conference promises to be one you won’t forget. We began our conference with visits to the Metropolitan Opera for a rehearsal and backstage tour, and then we were off to the Juilliard School to see some of their outstanding manuscripts and rare music collection! Our session presenters will share helpful information, insightful and inspiring thoughts, and memories of one of the 20th Century’s greatest composers and conductors, Pierre Boulez. And, what would a New York event be without a little Broadway, and Ballet? An event such as this requires dedication and work from a committed planning committee. -

Exploring performance KS5 styles in Musical Theatre Heidi McEntee Heidi McEntee is a Dance and KS5 – BTEC LEVEL 3, UNIT D10 Performing Arts specialist based in the Midlands. She has worked in education for over fifteen years delivering a variety of Dance and Performing Arts qualifications at Introduction Levels 1, 2 and 3. She is a Senior Unit D10: Exploring Performance Styles is one of the three units which sit within Module D: Assessment Associate working on musical theatre Skills Development from the new BTEC Level 3 in Performing Arts Practice Performing Arts qualifications and (musical theatre) qualification. FROM PENCIL TO PERFORMANCE: The creative nexus of arranging, orchestration and music direction in works of contemporary pop/rock musical theatre BRYAN SCHIMMEL 8300995 A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Humanities University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Music Final Corrected Submission 22 September 2014 ABSTRACT In the art form of musical theatre, available literature on the creative musical aspects of musicals has focused primarily on the composers and/or lyricists; their works having been extensively analysed and documented. There is, however, comparatively less literature and documentation on the processes that guide the transformation of the theatre composer’s work to an eventual performance embracing arranging, orchestration and music direction. This dissertation explores these practices from two perspectives – the creative and the recreative. First, from the creative perspective, I challenge Joseph P. Swain who makes a compelling case for composition as a tool of dramaturgy in his book The Broadway Musical: A Critical and Musical Survey (2002). I contest that his argument cannot hold true for pop/rock musicals in which the scores are comprised of pre-existing popular music that was not originally or intentionally composed for the stage. In order to understand how music functions as a dramatic element in musical theatre, it must follow that all collaborative creative forces that contribute to this music must be evaluated in a holistic manner. Dramaturgy contextualises and elucidates storytelling and artistic vision. While Swain has postulated that composition is an element of dramaturgy, I offer the notion that since arranging and orchestration contextualise and elucidate the composition they therefore cannot be excluded as dramaturgical devices. -

BROADWAY MUSICALS: RECENT PRESERVATIONS OF MUSICALS ON THE CONCERT STAGE AND IN THE STUDIO By James Fisher In 1985, RCA record producer Thomas Z. Shepard assembled an extraordinary cast of Broadway luminaries for two special performances of Stephen Sondheim's 1971 musical, Follies, which previously was represented in recordings by only an original cast album which eliminated, or significantly abbreviated, much of the score. Shepard's recording (RCA Red Seal, RCD2-7128) features virtually the entire score of the show, with snatches of dialogue, as recorded in concert before two enthusiastic audiences at Lincoln Center. In 1988, conductor John McGlinn's restored, complete (including a lengthy appendix of songs added to later versions of the show) studio recording (EMI, CDS 7 49108 2) of Jerome Kern's and Oscar Hammerstein's classic 1927 Broadway musical play, Show Boat, was released to widespread critical acclaim. The much recorded Show Boat had never before been captured in its entirety, and previous versions featured so many interpolations, omissions, or "updated" orchestrations that the simple beauty of Kern's score was often obscured. The success of these two otherwise unrelated recordings contributed to a revival of a nearly lost art-the studio recording of Broadway musicals with a cast and orchestra assembled not for any particular production, but for the sole purpose of preserving the score. The unexpected and extraordinary commercial success of the Follies and Show Boat recordings renewed interest in studio revivals of musicals leading to a flood of revisits to earlier works of the musical stage, while inspiring experimentation with the ways in which these recordings may present most successfully the score. -

BIOGRAPHIES OF PRESENTERS & COMPOSERS updated 8/15/18 Aark Duo, The The AarK Duo, flutist Tabatha Easley and percussionist Justin Alexander, is a dynamic and expressive chamber group committed to expanding the repertoire for flute and percussion through commissions and recording projects. Formed as a faculty chamber group in 2013 at Virginia Commonwealth University, AarK has performed throughout the United States, including at the National Flute Association Conferences in Washington D.C. and San Diego. International performances include The College Music Society International Conference in Stockholm, Sweden and Sydney, Australia. Adams, Daniel Daniel Adams (b. 1956, Miami, FL) is a Professor of Music at Texas Southern University in Houston. Adams holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (1985) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Master of Music from the University of Miami (1981) and a Bachelor of Music from Louisiana State University (1978). He served as the College Music Society Board Member for Composition from 2015 through 2017. Adams is the composer of numerous published musical compositions and the author of many articles and reviews on topics related to Twentieth Century percussion music, music pedagogy, and the music of Texas. His book entitled “The Solo Snare Drum” was published in 2000. He is also the author of two entries published in 2009 in the Oxford Encyclopedia of African-American History: 1896 to the Present and has authored a revision of the Miami, Florida entry for the Grove Dictionary of American Music. Adams has served as a panelist and lecturer nationally and internationally. Johnson (212) 875-5718; [email protected] NATHAN LANE TO HOST SYMPHONIC SONDHEIM WITH NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC In His Philharmonic Debut Evening of Music by Celebrated Broadway Composer-Lyricist Stephen Sondheim Paul Gemignani To Conduct January 29, 2013 Nathan Lane — Tony Award–winning star of theater, film, and television — will host Symphonic Sondheim, the New York Philharmonic’s performance of symphonic suites by Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award, Academy Award, and Grammy Award–winning composer Stephen Sondheim on January 29, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. Paul Gemignani will conduct the Orchestra in a program that includes a newly commissioned arrangement from Sunday in the Park with George and orchestral selections from The Enclave, Pacific Overtures, Stavisky, Into the Woods, and Sweeney Todd. Mr. Sondheim is renowned as both a lyricist and composer, and the program spotlights his musical achievements by presenting symphonic suites of his music without his lyrics. Mr. Sondheim studied music at Williams College, and after graduating he earned a two-year grant to study with composer and music theorist Milton Babbitt. Mr. Sondheim credits Babbitt with teaching him “long-line” composition, developing musical ideas over an extended period, and cites Rachmaninoff and Ravel as influences. The New York Philharmonic has presented Stephen Sondheim’s works 68 times, including the critically acclaimed, semi-staged production of Company in April 2011 conducted by Paul Gemignani and featuring Stephen Colbert, Neil Patrick Harris, Christina Hendricks, and Patti LuPone, among others. Making his Philharmonic debut in this program, Nathan Lane starred in Mr.
