H U M a N It Ie Svolume 15/Number 4 HUMANITIES VOLUME 15/NUMBER 4 EDITOR'S NOTE Baseball The poet Walt Whitman tells us "it has the snap, go, fling of the American atmosphere; it belongs as much to our institutions, fits into them as significantly as our Constitution's laws; is just as important in the sum total of our historic life." The "it" is baseball. If the rhetoric sounds extravagant to the modern ear, many find it nevertheless true. "Baseball is a thousand morality plays," filmmaker Ken Burns tells Endowment Chairman Sheldon Hackney in this issue. For Burns, whose nineteen-hour documentary on Baseball premieres this fall, the game is a mirror of American history, particularly of the long struggle over race. Seven years before Brown v. Vic Power was a first baseman who came to North America from Puerto Rico in 1950 to play baseball. He started in Class D ball in Ontario and a year later was signed by the Yankee organization. In 1952 he was assigned to the Yankee farm team in Kansas City where he hit .331 and drove in over a hundred runs. The next year he hit .349. He then was traded by the Yankees to the Philadelphia Athletics.

Historic Dodgertown is set to host its 4th Annual Labor Day Beach Bash youth baseball tournament from August 30-September 1. Following the Presidents’ Day Tournament every February, the Labor Day Beach Bash annually serves as one of the biggest holiday weekend events on the calendar. With school just underway, the three-day tourney will host a Florida-based contingent of teams ranging from Clearwater-St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, Orlando, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and even the Florida Keys, along with regional area squads. With many teams still completing the registration process, over 50 teams are expected and a number of hotels in the area are already at or near capacity. Games will begin Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 8 a.m. and will continue throughout the evening, while Friday night games are still a possibility as teams continue to register. Admission is just $5 per person, per day or $10 for a full tournament pass. Concessions are available at each field location, including the cloverleaf which hosts all teams ages 12 and under. Additional baseball and softball events in the coming months at Historic Dodgertown include the Elite Squad Fall Invite, Women’s Baseball Championships, Baseball Youth Fall Nationals, USSSA Baseball, Baseball Factory, Softball Factory Select Training, Gold Diamond Softball and Next Level Softball, among others.

The new partnership will bring some of the most exciting prospects in the game to Blue Wahoos Stadium alongside the storied legacy of Twins baseball. Twins history began in 1961 when Washington Senators president Calvin Griffith made the historic decision to move his family’s team to the Midwest, settling on the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in Minnesota. The new team was named after the state’s famous Twin Cities and began their inaugual season with a talented roster featuring Harmon Killebrew, Bob Allison, Camilo Pascual, and Jim Lemon.
