SIMS Foundation 2019 10th Anniversary Emerald Dinner Wednesday 25 September 2019 Sergeants Mess, Chowder Bay Rd, Mosman

Sydney has long been known as the ‘Emerald City’ for the extraordinary colour of the shallow water along the shoreline of Harbour and its bays. The deep emerald colour evokes the precious qualities of the emerald gemstone and highlights Sydney Harbour as the jewel in the city’s crown. The Emerald Dinner celebrates and highlights SIMS’ efforts and achievements in research, education and outreach and honours the work of the dedicated scientists who underpin SIMS’ commitment to the understanding, management and enhancement of our marine systems. SYDNEY INSTITUTE OF MARINE SCIENCE It also serves to acknowledge our generous FOUNDATION 2019 supporters who are helping us build SIMS into a world-class marine research institute with global impact.

Part of the core business of SIMS is engaging with the broader community around our oceans, including through our education programs. Our oceans and estuaries are the lifeblood of our planet, driving our social and economic survival. Ocean literacy, or ‘an understanding of the ocean’s influence on you and your influence on the ocean’ thus becomes a fundamental concept for every Australian. This is only achievable through education. Each year, SIMS has the privilege of welcoming more than 2000 students from across greater NSW into our formal education programs. Our programs are further strengthened by regional and international students, for whom SIMS is an important hub for learning in the marine sciences. SIMS is the primary institute offering specialised marine science education to Primary and High School students on the South-East Coast of Australia, and the beauty and astonishing diversity of Sydney Harbour’s dynamic marine environments makes our program attractive and unique to students worldwide. Our vision is to expand our educational reach by bringing students from low-SES, regional, and remote schools to SIMS to experience the marine environment. The potential impact of this expansion is clear from the video that will be shared at the dinner, of children who in many cases had never seen the ocean until their time at SIMS. We seek your support to expand our capacity to make SIMS educational programs accessible to a greater number of diverse students.
