This is and worry. serious stuff. But it lies at the centre of Christ‘s teaching. Jesus pulled no punches. Advent was never meant to be like this. He spoke repeatedly about death and the Advent was designed to be a time for certainty of judgement. It formed the basis of reflection and spiritual preparation for many of his parables. He also spoke about Christmas. Mercifully, it still is within the heaven and hell, urging his listeners to live Christian Church. Entitled Stations of the Nativity, and led by the warden of Holland House, the Revd Ian Spencer, this two-day experience begins at 10.00.am on MONDAY 10 DECEMBER and continues until 4.00.pm on TUESDAY 11 DECEMBER. The cost is £143 per person including all meals and accommodation. Those who cannot manage the two-day event can use Holland House for an Advent Quiet Day on THURSDAY 13 DECEMBER from 10.00.am until 4.00.pm. The cost of the day is £10. Buried Treasure Margaret Gardner uncovers the November meeting of the Alvechurch Historical Society We had a very good precise talk at our November meeting from Mr Ray Aspden who told us the historical background to The Mercian Hoard found in 2009 by a man using a metal detector. The hoard had obviously been buried very quickly and not very deeply. It consisted of gold and other precious metals torn off selected weaponry - swords, sheaths, shields, helmets and knives. There were no brooches, necklaces or rings. The hoard has been dated back to the seventh century but it is still not known to whom it belonged. Mr Aspden said that during that time there were many bloody battles between those wishing to become King of Mercia. Bands of soldiers criss-crossed the country near to the burial spot all through the century and many battles took place nearby. There is still no clue as to who buried this hoard. All I know is that our ancestors were a fierce, violent lot and much blood was spilt. Our speaker on MONDAY 3 DECEMBER will be Mr George Gascoyne telling us about Chadwick Manor. There is plenty of car parking behind the Catholic Church in School Lane with their kind permission. Page 4 Tiny Tots Service The under-fours have their very own Christmas Service on THURSDAY 20 DECEMBER at 10.15.am in St Laurence Church. Sitting on cushions with their mums and dads at the chancel step, the Christmas story will be told using straw and crib figures. There will be some simple Christmas carols and a prayer. The whole service lasts no more than twenty minutes. If you have very young children, do bring them along. The entrance to the church is via The Ark. All Together An ecumenical service is one where people from different religious traditions come together to worship the one God they all have in common. Alvechurch hosts a monthly ecumenical service held in a different church of the village. This month it is the turn of St Laurence Parish Church to host the service on SUNDAY 9 DECEMBER. Using the timeless service of Evensong and a good selection of Advent hymns, members of Alvechurch Baptist Church, St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and Rowney Green Shared Methodist and Anglican Church will gather in St Laurence Church at 6.00.pm. A warm ecumenical welcome awaits all who care to come along. The Silver Threads Margaret Gardner extends a warm welcome to the next meeting of the Silver Threads Club If you are looking for an enjoyable afternoon out with good mixed company, a game of Bingo, refreshments and a good laugh, come and join us in the Alvechurch Village Hall on WEDNESDAY 5 DECEMBER at 1.30pm. You will be made most welcome. Page 5 Festival Of Nine Lessons And Carols The annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols takes place on SUNDAY 23 DECEMBER at 6.00.pm in the candlelit parish church. The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols originated at Kings College, Cambridge in 1918 and has become an established part of Christmas celebrations ever since. Using nine readings from the Old and New Testaments, interspersed with carols sung by choir and congregation, the story of God’s loving purposes for the world, from the creation of the world to the redemption brought by the birth of Jesus Christ, is told. There is no better way to begin the celebration of Christ’s birthday. Christmas Eve There will be two Family Carol Services on CHRISTMAS EVE 24 DECEMBER at 4.00.pm and 6.00.pm. In addition to favourite Christmas carols, there is a specially- written play that bridges the divide between the first Christmas two thousand years ago, and Christmas today. It is being performed by members of the local community. The two Christmas Eve Family Carol Services are always popular services. In recent years, the 4.00.pm service has been “standing room only”. Some families, with older children, might prefer to come to the 6.00.pm service to be sure of a seat! Midnight Eucharist Burcot Grange There is always something special about the Christmas Eve Residential Midnight Service. Whilst others are tucked up in bed, and Care Setting for silence falls over the parish, those in the candlelit church listen the Elderly to the story of birth of Christ in the stable at Bethlehem and A unique blend of luxury country house living and quality forward thinking care, join with the shepherds and the angels proclaiming peace on Burcot Grange is the perfect place for earth, goodwill to everyone.
