International Mathematical Olympiad Preliminary Selection Contest – Hong Kong 2010 Prize-giving & Flag Presentation Ceremony

The International Mathematical Olympiad Preliminary Selection Contest – Hong Kong 2010 Prize-giving & Flag Presentation Ceremony, jointly organised by The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE), Education Bureau (EDB) and International Mathematical Olympiad Hong Kong Committee (IMOHKC), was successfully held at 10:30 am on 3 July 2010 (Saturday) at the Lecture Theatre, 4/F, West Block, Education Bureau, Tong. Dr Stephen David TOMMIS, Executive Director, the HKAGE; Mr LEE Pak-leung, Chief Curriculum Development Officer (Mathematics), EDB ; Prof SHUM Kar-ping, Chairman, the IMOHKC; Dr LEUNG Tat-wing and Mr HUNG Chun-may, Committee Members, the IMOHKC presented the certificates to the student awardees. Mr Robert LAI, Managing Director, Pro-Technic Machinery Ltd sponsored the scholarship and presented the certificates to the Hong Kong Team.

More than 500 students participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad Preliminary Selection Contest – Hong Kong 2009. Those who stood out above the other contestants were eligible for the nine-month training programmes and joined a number of mathematical competitions. Finally, 12 students who had outstanding performance in the training and competitions were selected to represent Hong Kong at international competitions .

Brain Chung, a member of the Hong Kong Team, shared his feelings in the prize-giving ceremony. He said the overseas contests not only provided the team with valuable chances to make like-minded friends from around the world, but also enabled them to learn from other people to expand their knowledge.

The 51st International Mathematical Olympiad will be held in Kazakhstan during 2 - 14 July 2010. Dr LAU Yuk-kam, Mathematics Department of The University of Hong Kong, Mr ALABAN,

Dr LAU Yuk-kam has left Hong Kong for the Olympiad’s meeting on 2 July and the Hong Kong Team has departed on 5 July.
