  • The Other Tchaikowsky
The Other Tchaikowsky A biographical sketch of André Tchaikowsky David A. Ferré Cover painting: André Tchaikowsky courtesy of Milein Cosman (Photograph by Ken Grundy) About the cover The portrait of André Tchaikowsky at the keyboard was painted by Milein Cosman (Mrs. Hans Keller) in 1975. André had come to her home for a visit for the first time after growing a beard. She immediately suggested a portrait be made. It was completed in two hours, in a single sitting. When viewing the finished picture, André said "I'd love to look like that, but can it possibly be me?" When I sneaked a glance I saw that his eyes had narrowed and he held his mouth slightly open, as if ready to speak but unable to bring out the words. Finally, he managed a weak, "Would you say that again?" It was April 1985, and I had just arrived in London to enjoy six months of vacation and to fulfill an overdue promise to myself.

  • A Regular Octagon Is Inscribed Inside a Square. Another Square Is Inscribed Inside the Octagon
This brainteaser was written by Derrick Niederman. A regular octagon is inscribed inside a square. Another square is inscribed inside the octagon. What is the ratio of the area of the smaller square to the area of the larger square? © 2009 National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Inc. Resources for Teaching Math http://illuminations.nctm.org Solution: ½. One way to see this is to rotate the blue triangles onto the top of the red trapezoids, with the hypotenuse of the triangle flush with the shorter base of the trapezoid. Then it’s pretty easy to see that if the four red and blue triangles are folded over, they’d completely cover the yellow square. In other words, the area of the yellow square is equal to the area of red trapezoids and blue triangles combined, so the ratio of the smaller square to the larger square is ½. It is also possible to calculate the area of the larger and smaller squares. Start by assuming that the length of the shorter sides of the triangles is 1 unit, as shown below. Then the hypotenuse of each triangle is 2 , and since the hypotenuse is also a side of the regular octagon, then all sides of the octagon are 2 . Consequently, the side length of the larger square is 2+ 2, and the side length of the smaller square is 1+ 2, so their 2 2 respective areas are (22+=+) 642 and (12+=+) 322. Dividing the area of the smaller square by that of the larger yields ½. If those calculations are a little too messy for you, then here is an alternative solution.

  • Fairy Tales and Political Socialization
FAIRY TALES AND POLITICAL SOCIALIZATION by Mehrdad Faiz Samadzadeh A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Curriculum, Teaching & Leadership University of Toronto Ontario Institute for Studies in Education © Copyright by Mehrdad Faiz Samadzadeh 2018 FAIRY TALES AND POLITICAL SOCIALIZATION Mehrdad Faiz Samadzadeh Doctor of Philosophy Department of Curriculum, Teaching & Leadership Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto 2018 Abstract The concept of childhood is one of the many facets of modernity that entered Western consciousness in the seventeenth century. It emanated from the historical mutations of the post-Renaissance era that set in motion what Norbert Elias calls the civilizing process, one that spawned a repressive mode of socialization in tandem with the cultural and ideological hegemony of the new power elite. Accordingly, childhood became a metaphor for oppression targeting not only children, but also women, the underclass, the social outcast, and the colonized as they all were deemed “incompletely human”. From mid-nineteenth century on, however, childhood began to evince a liberating potential in tandem with the changing direction of modern Western civilization. This ushered in an alternative concept of childhood inspired by the shared characteristics between the medieval and modern child that finds expression in the works of distinguished literary figures of the Victorian era. What followed was an entire movement towards the recognition of children’s rights and status that set the context for the growing interest in childhood as a subject of historical inquiry in the twentieth century. This conceptual vicissitude of childhood is central to the present thesis which I pursue in relation to the literary genre of fairy tale.

  • The Octagon in Leonardo's Drawings
Mark Reynolds Research 667 Miller Avenue The Octagon in Leonardo’s Drawings Mill Valley, CA 94941 USA [email protected] Abstract. Mark Reynolds presents a study on Leonardo’s abundant use of the octagon in his drawings and architectural renderings. Keywords: Leonardo da Specifically, he focuses on Leonardo’s applications of the octagon: in Vinci, octagons, geometric his studies and sketches of the centralized church, and for which we constructions can find influences specifically from Brunelleschi, as well as from other fifteenth-century architects working with this type of religious structure; in his almost obsessive and frequently repetitious drawing of octagonal shapes and forms in his notebooks throughout his career; in his project for a pavilion while with the Sforzas in the last part of his period in Milan. Also examined are ways to develop the modules to accommodate ¥2 and the T rectangles. The application of the modular units, so far, have been within the square and its gridwork, but as the octagon has traditionally been used in the development of both the circle and the square, this shape is an interesting challenge in terms of linking the two-dimensional surface to the three-dimensional forms we are planning to generate. The object is to provide us with more insight as to why the octagon held so much fascination for Leonardo as one of the ultimate geometric expressions of grandeur and practicality in spatial organization, design, and development. Often in Leonardo’s drawings of octagons, precise geometric constructions were lacking; the master’s approach was freehand. The author seeks to learn if Leonardo’s sketches can be put to the rigors of strict geometric construction, and still be viable as accurate renderings of octagonal geometric spaces with his own geometric constructions of those same spaces.

No details about the policy were *Promoters would be charged an annual fee for a promoter's available at press time but it will include wrestlers making public license. If the promoter averaged more than 1,000 paying service anti-steroid promos on television. Hopefully Frey, who is spectators per event in Florida over the previous year, his a newcomer to the wrestling world, will realize the touchiness license fee would be $1,000 (which would mean only WWF and involved in this issue and not try to have wrestlers who have WCW). All others wishing to promote would have to pay $250 achieved the spotlight partially through the use of steroids for a promoters license (which covers a lot of ground) to then make statements that give one the impression they would never touch the stuff. Frey *There would be a five percent tax on all live gates. The original also said in comments for this coming Sunday's Miami Herald bill included taxes not only on live gates, but also on gimmicks that WCW would be instituting a policy to post signs in front of sold at live events and pay-per-view revenue from systems arenas when advertised talent isn't going to appear.

  • The New Christian Desengaño and Diaspora Identities of Antonio Enríquez Gómez
LONGING FOR JUSTICE: THE NEW CHRISTIAN DESENGAÑO AND DIASPORA IDENTITIES OF ANTONIO ENRÍQUEZ GÓMEZ DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Matthew David Warshawsky, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2002 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Elizabeth B. Davis, Adviser Professor Rebecca Haidt ________________________ Adviser Professor Donald Larson Department of Spanish and Portuguese ABSTRACT This dissertation studies the dream narratives and accompanying interpolated semipicaresque stories of Antonio Enríquez Gómez in order to understand the satirizing aims of an exiled Spanish New Christian author. In El siglo pitagórico y vida de don Gregorio Guadaña, La torre de Babilonia, and La inquisición de Lucifer y visita de todos los diablos, Enríquez Gómez addresses corruption and deceit in the dominant ideology. Using allegorical settings whose satirical characteristics reflect the seventeenth century, Enríquez Gómez calls for the reform of greed, false appearances, and pride. The dissertation explores how, within the framework of Judeo-Christian teachings, the author challenges the social order of places such as a fictionalized Babylon and an infernal Inquisition that in varying degrees are metaphors for Spain. The dissertation also argues that the New Christian perspective of Enríquez Gómez’s works differentiates them from similar texts of his contemporary, Francisco de Quevedo, by substituting converso dissillusionment for the “stock” Golden Age type. This perspective is evident in Enríquez Gómez’s criticism of the Spanish Inquisition; in a definition of original sin that reflects a converso’s exile, longing, and rootlessness; and in the assertion of the superiority of virtuous deeds to ethnicity.
