I analyze different visual and narrative strategies developed by the directors of youth cinema during the Brezhnev period as mechanisms for circumventing ideological control over cultural production. -

Russia Eternal: Recalling The Imperial Era In Late- And Post-Soviet Literature And Culture Abstract The return of Tsarist buildings, narratives and symbols has been a prominent facet of social life in post- Soviet Russia. My dissertation aims to explain this phenomenon and its meaning by tracking contemporary Russia’s cultural memory of the Imperial era. By close-reading both popular and influential cultural texts, as well as analyzing their conditions of production and reception, I show how three generations of Russian cultural elites from the 1950s until today have used Russia’s past to fight present- day political battles, and outline how the cultural memory of the Imperial epoch continues to inform post- Soviet Russian leaders and their mainstream detractors. Chapters One and Two situate the origin of Russian culture’s current engagement with the pre-Revolutionary era in the social dynamic following Stalin’s death in 1953. -

FROM METROPOLE TO THE PEN CENTRE 1 ‘A wolf cannot break with tradition and the she-wolf her sightless cubs nags: with her milk we imbibe one condition, ‘Never run past the hunter’s red flags!’ Vladimir Vysotsky, ‘Wolf Hunt’, August 1968. First published in Metropole, 1979 The Metropole affair of 1979 made a special contribution to the struggle for the anti-censorship Article 29 of the Russian Constitution, which the current regime has gone to great lengths to reduce to the status of a stage prop. The recent scandal at the Russian PEN Centre over the expulsion from its ranks of Sergey Parkhomenko, the ‘administrative conclusions’ drawn about certain turbulent writers and the voluntary resignation of others, have shown the 1979 affair in a new light. The persecutor in the PEN scandal is Yevgeny Popov, president of the PEN Centre, and himself a hero of events that took place almost forty years ago, in which it was he who was persecuted. The example of Popov seems to turn the Metropole affair on its head and to illustrate just how easily and imperceptibly ‘keeping politics out of art’ can lead to betrayal of the very ideals for which someone fought and suffered. Or is it all simply a matter of the blandishments of power which, in certain circumstances and at certain times, become irresistible? So what kind of conspiracy was this that in 1979 took place in full public view? A mutiny on the ship of Soviet culture? The coming out of non-official literature? Who was the winner in that match against Sofia Vlasievna (i.e., the Soviet regime), and where will playing games with Putia Vlasievna, her direct descendant, lead? ‘A Chunk of Literature’ It is a quiet Saturday morning. -

Both Russian and American academics have tackled the political implications and historical innovations of perestroika-era groups such as Akvarium, Mashina Vremeni, and DDT. Similarly, the Beatles craze of the 1960s is also frequently mentioned in scholarly works as an enormous social phenomenon in the USSR – academics and critics alike wax poetic about the influence of the Fab Four on the drab daily lives of Soviet citizens. Yet what happened in between these two moments of Soviet musical life? Very little critical work has been done on Soviet popular music of the 1970s, its place in Soviet society, or its relationship to Western influences. -

The emphasis is laid on social issues of women translators’ work. The main problems dis- cussed are as follows: How have women contributed to social and literary processes? To what extent were translational activities of women different and/or separate from those of men? Women participated in all major social processes in Russian and So- viet history. From the eighteenth century onwards to the present day, they have been involved in translational work and other types of social-systemic transfer (primarily from the West). Women played their role of translators in the same spheres where men did. Evtushenko and the Underground Poets1 he more one studies the Symbolist-Acmeist-Futurist creative explo- T sion in Russian poetry of the first three decades of our century, the more staggered one is by its total scope and accomplishment. By the early 1930s, that great age was forcibly brought to an end by what in retrospect amounts to a governmental ban on all creativity and imagination. While Mayakovsky was being acclaimed the great Soviet poet and his work na- tionalized, while Pa ster nak was being decried by the Soviet press for his uniqueness and individuality, no younger poet was any longer allowed to try to equal the stylistic daring and modernity of either of these two. Vic- torian-age poetic techniques, themes, and styles were brought back, pro- claimed the latest word, and institutionalized as the only possible way for Socialist-Realist poetry, whereupon all Russian poetry worthy of the name ceased until after Stalin’s death. As Boris Slutsky, a poet who survived the Stalinist period, described the plight of Russian poetry during those years: Only yesterday she was on the run, Wringing her hands in terror.
