Busy week coming up with that Senior Level 2 and a combined Youth Level 3 coaching course, running from Tuesday 9th til Sunday 9th April. Changed days since those courses used to cost nearly nowt, despite being residential - they were held in the Meat Inspectors quarters ( very apt ) in Lincoln College, near Christchurch, spartan accommodation but Rab top class instructors, Barry Truman, and Terry Conley as staff coaches. Not so Spartan was a Level 3 jaunt I went on at Queenstow, when Trans Tours was a national sponsor - Trans Tours Utd was then the Chch champion Nat. Lg. winning team. ( full of imports ) TT was a top class Qtown hotel, superb food and facilities. We trained in sweltering heat down in town, and jogged back up the hill to the hotel when we finished - straight into the TT swimming pool to cool off - with pints of lager delivered by white coated barmen, floating under our noses - those were the days, my friend. It was a hard life... and cost just pennies, for a ten day course... Top talent on the course too, several NZ internationals just back from playing Iran. Also Wally ‘ Juggler’ Hughes former English pro, who ran City then became NZ coach, replacing Truman ( who ran http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ Zorba thehttp://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ TT course.) Not sure of the date, but Zorba the Greek was in Vogue and at the break-up, there was dangerous dancing on tables - ask Neil Zorba Mackenzie. Such good news that Tess Nicol has been appointed WDO for FSouth, she is obviously a top female keeper, and has the wit and energy to become a large factor in her Womens Development role. Her bravery in tween the sticks was sometimes breathtaking, whether in the classic mud heaps of Ellis, Culling, or Logan - she set standards playing - and will set them again as a WDO. Tidy opening weekend for the club, just one loss to prevented Gaz from having to open up his pockets for a Presidents shout...

Bizarre scenes for our Men’s Prems who were pumped to face Caversham at Tonga Park for the Blair Davidson Challenge Trophy – but never got to kick a ball after the referee cancelled the match due to incorrect pitch markings. Frustrating that the game couldn’t get underway but sometimes these things happen, let's hope its a one off.

It was an eye-opening start for our 2nds who faced a Tech side oozing experience and class. We were definitely second best although the 8-1 scoreline felt a little harsh, just got away on us a bit towards the end. Onwards and upwards, there’s plenty of new faces to the grade but Tel is confident they’re putting the hard yards in so the results will surely come.

PV’s Thirds faced bogey team Caversham, and made a good start, playing well and improving as the game progressed. There were a few new faces who played well and were solid. Came away with an impressive 2-1 win, goals to Dan Baker and Matt Duke. POD went to Barry Schmidt, but the real star was the sweeper/keeper –none other than PV himself, diving and punching like a sprightly Ed de Goey.

The 1888’s took on great rivals

Page 8 Melchester Sharks, and it was a classic game of three halves… good hard game, we conceded early on but the lads dug deep to get 1-1 at the (first) break thanks to Jules White. Steve Brown scored a spectacular winner with 15 to go and we held on. All in all very happy with the start to the season – Alan “Neymar” Gray POD.

Chargers went out to a windswept Culling Park to face Tech Weasels, it was a tough but even match played in great spirits. With the wind at their back, Tech opened the scoring, but we grabbed one before the break thanks to new recruit Andrew. We dominated play in the second half and were denied by the woodwork and Tech’s stubborn defence. Henry scored a good goal before Tech grabbed a late equaliser. 2-2 final score, we’ll take that. POD newRob who was brilliant at the back.

The O35 Originals were also out at Culling and were 2 goals down at halftime into the wind. Nige gave us a stern talking to and Rich Fyfe must have listened scrambling our first goal in. Then Charlie smashed in a 45 yard screamer to tie it up. With minutes remaining Maff burst down the right, http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/crossed in a beauty to Lam who http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/headed in the winner! POD Rich.

The Colts opening game was out at Mosgiel in the sunshine. A solid start to the season with 6 goals and 4 injuries! Goals to Gerald Sherratt, Jab, Gribbs, Steve Mc, & Matt. Promising performance, POD was Jab.

Women’s teams get underway next week, so should be a great turn-out at the clubrooms next Saturday! Morgan Page 9 R. W A F C

Flooring - Bathrooms - Trade 738 Princes St, Dunedin Page 10 The first day of the season saw a bumper turn out with not a spare blade of grass available- 1sts, 2nds , 3rds 45s .Womens v youth all at home and many thanks to Shane Carvell for bringing out his blow up fun training set up and football south for running training drills for our squillions of excited juniors , Gordy liberated Fulton Hogan's BBQ for the day and young crooner Casey Pike entertained the revellers with some smooth sweet melodic tunes . The bar was humming and it was a great vibe on opening day - shame that in a Couple of years we might be swimming rather than scoring on the lush veldt that is Memorial...... grrrr the DCC. But back to the main event and the primed and pumped first team with new coach Whitson at the helm have been gearing up for today and hit their straps early v Northern - thanks to emphasis on the good old leg and lung work preseason and witch doctor TK's weird pre match concoction (sorry lads that's a state secret) young Sean was very solid in goals in his first start for the prems and the event younger Rory Findlay was a stand out on defence along with Cam who won every challenge and header. The lads responded to Whittys demand to play intense pressing and speedy play. Speedster Issac and Sam impressing on the flanks with Isaac bagging a brace and Sam setting up 3 of the goals. Connor Neill was Feisty up front and also was on the score sheet. The centre midfield saw Morgan Day , Riley Anderton and the rangy Andreas Hirzky cover every blade of grass with Andreas getting 2 http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/and having another 2 disallowed . 3.0 at the break and 5.0 at f/t - with Reggie and Fernando coming on in the 2nd stanza to not give northern a sniff. Unfortunately that's http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/as good as it got ..whether it was April's Fool, the end of daylight savings or opening day some of our club members must've been overwhelmed as they left the remaining teams seriously underdone. The seconds got smoked 5.1 v a very impressive Braes side with Robbie Mitchell's coached team being too savvy for us first up. Chris Langers 3rds were even shorter with Langers himself drafted in for the full game- along with plenty of youth with his son Javier and Thomas who got the pod nod as well as the skilful Ahmed and Mohammed but Tech were too good winning 6-0. Oldies 45 fell to Roslyn by the same score . We were like outpatients in a dementia ward- introducing ourselves to another for the first time- over and over- Big Craig on his first ever game taking the accolades. Incredibly Steve Day was absent on opening day for the first time ever- rumour has it he made sure his wedding was on s Saturday morning not to miss kick off and had both his sons induced so they wouldn't arrive on a Saturday - but he'll be back!! 35s went to a very foggy and blustery Forrester- Surfer Mike scored on debut - big Dan rattled the X bar but with wind going in the wrong direction and us running out of wind in the 2nd half northern took full revenge for their first team scoring an impressive 6.1 win ( PS - Club Quiz on 6th May ) Nevinho Page 11 Open Day on the Plains More HungerBall page 21

Page 12 Coach Darren Hart will be more than busy these days, what with attending the Senior Level 2 ( UEFA C eqiv. ) course along with 14 others. His bonus for the course was in having to video a training session at Forrester, plus the ongoing mechanics of organising - almost from scratch, Varsity’s 2017 campaign. However, that Bye week provided some respite for the Varsity club, Club President Mag O’Malley reported that "It's looking to be an exciting season this year for Varsity. ‘We're going into the season with 5 men's teams, 3 women's teams and it's looking like there will even be a fourth women's team that is going to be a joint Northern/Uni mix! Our Div 4 Men did so well in their season last year that they've been promoted up to Div 3, giving us 2 men's teams fighting for top spot in this division. Our Men's prems, still under the seasoned eye of Darren Hart, are looking hopeful with a bit more experience under most of the player's belts and a few strong new additions to round it all off. Kingsley McConnochie is http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ taking over from Marc for the http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ mens 2nds Women wise, our prems are very happy to welcome aboard our new head coach, James Coombes, who will be assistant coached by the talented Tess Nicol. The team is quite new this year, however, thanks to a strong influx of talented girls and the instruction of our quality coaches it is shaping up to be an exciting season. We're all very excited to see how everything plays out!" M O’M

I feel incredibly humbled and excited to be able to have the opportunity to work with Football South to not only better football for both women and girls, but for everybody in the region. It's an incredible feeling to have been given this opportunity to give back to the footballing community after being so supported as a player. A special thanks to those people who have continued to support my footballing endeavors as not only a player over the years, but now as a development officer. I would love to hear from friends, parents, coaches and those within the footballing community about any ideas and propositions you may have to make the game more enjoyable and fun for everyone. I am ready and excited for the challenges that lie ahead!

Law Changeshttp://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ - No Triple Punishment... http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ The previous ‘triple-punishment’ law meant a player who denied a goal- scoring opportunity in the box was automatically red-carded and handed a suspension, as well as giving away a penalty. The law has now been changed so players committing accidental fouls that deny goalscoring opportunities in the penalty area will not be automatically sent off, with a yellow card sufficient punishment.

As the amendment states: “When a denial of a goalscoring opportunity offence is committed by a defender in the penalty area, the penalty kick effectively restores the goalscoring opportunity so the punishment for the player should be less strong (e.g. a yellow card) than when the offence is committed outside the penalty area. However, when the offence is handball or clearly not a genuine attempt to play or challenge for the ball, the player will be sent off.”

FT Rovers 5 v Southland 1. HT 3-1 Goals Elliott Gardner (3) Callum Flaws, and Jan Kumar. Today we welcomed Southland to Queenstown for both of our first games back in the Dunedin competition. Southland having had a good pre season and us having a mixed bag to date I wasn't sure how this game would go. The weather was very hot and not something that both teams appreciated, but both teams gave it everything for the full 90. Jamie As expected in a first game of the season we didn't find any fluency in our game and that was down to a bit of us not showing enough quality on the ball and Southland maintaining a good shape when out of possession. We had 8 new debutants in our squad today and was always mindful that today could be a challenge. Our first goal is a opportunist effort from Callum Flaws who pounces on a spill from the Southland keeper for a tap in and our first goal of the season. Goals two and three come from Elliott Gardner, one a good finish off the back of a good run and another from a solo effort from the bye line. Southland get a goal back just before half time and its reward for their endeavour. We made some adjustments to our play and scored a quick fourth after the break. A foul on Jan around 20 yards out, sees him dust himself down and bend a delightful shot into the corner, 4-1 then becomes 5-1 as some broken play falls to Elliot to coolly finish for his 5. The game really opened up in the last 15 as both teams tired and goals could have gone it at either end if it wasn't for top keeping from both keepers. The referee team were outstanding today, letting the game flow. We go to Tech next week and look forward to that challenge. Jamie

Page 26 Six Goal Draw... At Sunnyvale, it was a well fought battle, as Green Island drew 3-3 with a more experienced Dunedin Technical side. The Island defended well, then hit Technical on the break for a 2-1 halftime lead, with goals by Max Johnston and Cam Scott, then a superbly flighted freekick by Ross Howard drew Technical level soon after halftime. It was toe to toe for a while with http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/Technical http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/looking likely, then the powerfull Matt Brazier had Island support on its feet with a well taken sprint and shot to earn a 3-2 lead. In reply George McCall retaliated for Tech and the match hung in balance, with big Brazier going closest to the winner when he was fouled after a bulldozing last minute run. ‘ Penalty’ was the cry from local support, and from the advangae point of looking square on, it seemed a good call... but referee Jeremy Samuels awarded a free kick outside the box, Tech’s keeper made a tidy save, and the match finished even. The Green Man Page 27 Tech 3, Green Island 3

Today saw Tony's boys open the season out at Sunnyvale taking on the young side of Green Island. The game was back and forth and had Tech not once but twice come back from behind. Being down on so many players from the previous years, Tony is still optimistic with the outcome of the game as it shows the strength of the new guys coming into the squad this year. The team went away with 1 point and are looking forward to next week. POD Ross Howard. Fletcher Cup, Tech 8 vs Roslyn 1 A strong start by this years experienced Fletcher cup squad saw them up 3-0 after the first 8 mins of the game. They managed to continue this score line through to the half where they came out with a much more determined approach at half time. 5 more goals were set to find the back of the net for Tech with Aaron Burgess netting a hat trick. The scoreline ending 8-1 after 90 mins. POD to the young goal keeper Ben Dybuk. 3 rds, Tech 6 vs Mosgiel 0 A strong Tech side traveled out to the plains of Memorial park to take on the Mosgiel team. Starting strong and sticking to the strategy saw them put away a 35 meter kick to go up 1-0, at the half time mark Tech managed to net a further 3 goals and go into the interval 4 - 0. Going back into the last 45 Tech struggled at first to keep the conditioning alive and started to find themselves forcing the ball rather than playing football. 2 goals later had them heading away with 3 points 6 - 0. POD Elliott Gibbins. 5ths WeaselsTech 2 vs Roslyn Chargers 2

Page 28 These two teams faced off against each other again in as little as a week. Tech opened the scoring and held this right through until just before the first half ended where Roslyn equaled the score. The second half saw a similar performance with both teams battling hard. Another goal to each team saw them sharing a point each and heading home 2-2. Player of the day Daniel Anfield. Colts Tech 2 vs Roslyn Originals 3 Runner ups from 2016 this Tech team were ready to take on the boys from Roslyn. This looked to be the case with Tech going into the half 2-0 up after 2 goals to Alex La Roche. A change of direction and the wind playing a factor saw Tech stuck in their own half battling to keep the ball out of the net. Unfortunately on the day Roslyn managed to use this to their advantage and ended the game 3-2 winners. POD going to the goal scorer Alex La http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/Roche http://www.footballsouth.co.nz/ Over 45's Tech 1 Vs Green Island 4 The Over 45 team were at home against the lads of Green Island and unfortunately did not have the best day in the office. The team going into the half 1-0 down. The 2nd half was however the worse of the 2 and the game ended 4-1. Player of the day David Cross. CapnTech

Get along to the Dunedin Oval on 8th April, 2017 for local FIT4FOOTBALL Fun ... The “old school” casual pre-game jog has been given the red card by New Zealand Football and ACC who have teamed up to launch a revolutionary new warm-up programme aimed at tackling the growing frequency and cost of injuries to players. New Zealand Football’s Fit4Football initiative has been developed as a complete guide to match preparation, performance enhancement and injury prevention for players of all ages and level of competition. Fit4Football’s 11+ warm-up component incorporates FIFA’s 11+ programme, a 20-minute training and match- preparation routine used by many of the top club and national teams that has reduced acute injuries by up to 50 percent, and non-acute by up to 30 percent. “Fit4Football changes that mind-set and can benefit players of all ages and ability social to competitive, but our focus is on younger players especially, to help them develop new and far more effective routines and habits.” NZ Football and ACC have partnered to build a national injury prevention and performance enhancing team, located around New Zealand in the seven Federations. “We’d encourage anyone involved in football, be they players, coaches, referees or team managers, to get along to a roadshow near them to learn about how Fit4Football can significantly reduce the risk of injury. “We want more people loving and playing football to the best of their ability, injury-free, for life. It’s about performing on the park, not sitting on the side-lines injured.” There have already been two Fit4Football sessions held by the Injury Prevention team in Nelson and Christchurch and there are more to come in the next two months. Come along to The Oval on 8th April, and see what Fit4Football is all about. There will be fun live demonstrations of our 11+ warm up programme, face painting, inflatable hunger ball, prizes, giveaways and much more. Lot's of fun to be had, and a great start to the football season.

‘ Never Wrong, Rarely Right’

Page 30 Rob’s Division 1 team played well against Mosgiel out at Memorial. We conceded the first goal, but answered with two of our own to have our noses in front at half time. Three unanswered goals in the second half gave us a 5-1 win. Young Rhys Quarrell scored a hat- trick on his senior debut. Luke Mitchell and Rick Visser also got on the scoresheet for Braes. The standout performers for Braes were Thomas, who had a solid game in the midfield, and birthday boy Tom Rawcliffe on the right wing. Our young defensive line also did really well keeping Mosgiel at bay. Division 3 Black had a game of two halves against Northern Winter. Playing into a strong headwind, we had to work hard to earn a 3-1 half-time lead. With the wind at our backs, the second half was much smoother, and we ran out winners 11-2. Five goals to Jono, four to Danny, one to player/coach Scott, and Leighton Ford nodded one in in his first game for our club. Division 3 Yellow hosted Melchester Teckle. Playing into the wind in the first half we held them scoreless, but unfortunately a couple of defensive lapses let them sneak in a couple of soft goals in the second half. Final score was 2-0 to Melchester. The Over 35s played well as a team, passing and moving well against a Melchester team who are rejoining the competition this year. The goals from six different players finding the back of the net in an eight-nil win to Grants Braes. The Over 45s had a much tighter tussle against Northern, but came out on top 3-2. All in all, not a bad start to the season for the senior Braes sides with four wins out of five games.
