1. We are only two weeks away from the start of the 2011 season. From your point of view, how have you viewed the pre-season and especially your initiative to have a pre season camp in Perth?

Our Pre-season has been a key focus once again for all players to build an important base for the season. It has been well attended in all areas and our camp to Perth was really well received by all who attended. Our aims on the camp was to experience a different environment with 4 days of solid training and also bring the playing group together which I felt we achieved. 2. The Williamstown list welcomes in 17 new players in 2011, how have you viewed the change in playing personnel from last season? After losing both our bookends in Faulks and Little, it has left us with a big challenge to reconstruct our team. Brett Goodes has been our most experienced recruit and is a class player. With our other new recruits I believe we will see some of them progress into Senior football and many of the first year TAC Cup players filling the 23rd player role. I’m confident we will have good depth from the Williamstown players this season. 3. Justin Plapp and Jeremy Barnard have joined our coaching ranks this year and Todd Clark has had changes to his role. Please tell us about the qualities they bring to our Club and their roles. Justin has been appointed as our Reserves / Development Coach and his understanding of young players is well proven in recent years. Jeremy has a wealth of experience as a player and coach and already has made his imprint on our mid-field group. Todd has really grown in his role as Senior Assistant and his management skills and attention to detail makes him an important member of our coaching staff. 4. Season 2011 sees the introduction of the Foxtel Champions League with Williamstown drawn to play WAFL Premiers Swan Districts in Perth on the 9 th of April. What are your views on the competition and how will Williamstown approach our opening game?

We are really excited to be part of this new competition. It will give our players and the VFL great exposure. At the moment we will treat it like any other game with maybe the chance to rest some older players and give some younger players a chance to play. We will wait and see how it all pans out. 5. As the Senior Coach, what impact will there be with no training or playing at Burbank Oval in 2011?

I have mixed feelings as I know the players enjoy playing at Williamstown but knowing that we will return in 2012 to top class facilities will make our 2011 travelling to all parts of the state worth while. We will still train and prepare in good facilities at Whitten Oval and at the Western Jets training base (Crofts Reserve) 6. During your time as Coach of Subiaco, you saw that Club develop their facilities and invest in their infrastructure. As the Senior Coach what do you hope to see occur at Burbank Oval with the current re- development and what positive impact can it have on the coaching and playing group? The key is to develop facilities for both members and players. In 2012, our members will enjoy an excellent social / dining room and with strong input from the football department we will hopefully have upgraded player and coaching facilities which will provide the necessary tools to prepare the players better than any other VFL club. 7. Now in your second year as Coach of Williamstown, how have you seen the Leadership group develop in your time and please tell us about Richard Maloney as he oversees our playing group and now has a similar role with the . History will tell you that to achieve any high performance as a team, leadership plays a massive part. Richard really understands what is required as a player in this area and the improvement by our leaders last season was quite evident . We are expecting Richard to even lift this group to another level and his role at the Bulldogs will be very similar.

8. You have a dual role as Development Coach of the Western Bulldogs. How do you manage the demands of development of young players and the aim of creating a winning culture and how supportive is Rodney Eade? It’s a very difficult role in that you serve two masters. I enjoy working with the young Bulldogs and try to develop not only their physical game but just as importantly help get them ready mentally for the long and tough AFL journey. ‘Rocket’ I must say gives me all the support in my role as he knows often I’m caught in tough selection situations. 9. You have a great appreciation of “history” within football clubs and how important is it to have a strong “Club 1864” group? The past players at Williamstown Football Club (Club 1864) is very important to the club culture and future of the Club. Often we see the boys from the halcyon days of the ‘50s to Terry Wheeler and Big Bazza Round of the ‘80s which gives great inspiration to the players. I love it when they have their reunions and look forward to their continued support. 10. What are your thoughts about the VFL competition and the constant speculation that a number of AFL Clubs are considering entering “stand alone” sides in 2012? Personally I loved the old VFA days and no doubt alignments have eroded the passion for a lot of supporters. I totally understand why certain AFL clubs want to enter stand alone teams however our alignment with the Western Bulldogs works very smoothly. It will be very interesting to see what unfolds for next season. 11. Which of the first year Western Bulldogs players have impressed you thus far and who can step up this year from the following group – Panos, Cordy,Roughead, Hooper, Mulligan, Tutt, Howard etc. and have shown they are both ready to take on the AFL challenge however reminds me of a young Glen Archer. He will surprise many plus Zeph Skinner will be exciting to watch as he develops his football knowledge. I expect all the mentioned players to make big inroads as key ‘Willy’ players and push for AFL positions. 12. Mitch Hahn has a significant role with Williamstown in 2011. How important is this role and how has Mitch approached it over the pre-season? I have really enjoyed coaching and working with Mitch over the summer. He has added a players perspective to the coaching staff and has surprised me with his organizational ability on the track. He will play a key part in both his playing and coaching on the field - but certainly we hope he can get another chance at AFL level at some stage in 2011. 13. Your wife Cathie is great support to yourself. She obviously loves her football and plays a key role interacting with the other coaches wives. How important is her role? Cath is often referred to as the unofficial “chairman of selectors”. Often I have to fight her to keep some players in the side but to have a wife who understands the pressure and commitments to coaching is a bonus. She does enjoy helping the other coaches wives to feel a part of the Club - mainly with a ‘Chardi’ in hand!!! 14. Should be an exciting season. What should the Williamstown faithful expect to see from the Seagulls in 2011? It’s difficult to really put an expectation on where we may finish as the competition can change from year to year, however I do expect our supporters to see a team that will each week commit to the task expected and will never concede at any point of a game during the season. I look forward to see our supporters at all our games regardless of where they are played in 2011.

THE WORD FROM WILLIAMSTOWN— MAR 2011 Page 4 Check us out at williamstown.aflvic.com.au Development Academy

The Liam Picken Academy is already starting to reap rewards as a marked improvement has been seen in the development of the Club’s younger players. Since the formation of the Academy, players have undertaken a number of learning sessions aimed to improve their football understanding and knowledge. Individually players have been working hard on both their strengths and weaknesses through one-on-one tuition with our coaching staff.

Development Academy Coaches Jeremy Barnard and Justin Plapp have held a number of “classroom learning sessions” in which players have been taught about numerous structures, situational play and other tactics. This has been reinforced out on the playing field with walk through sessions as well as incorporating this learning into normal training. With many bright performances seen so far by the young Seagulls in pre-season, it is clear to see what a great job Jeremy and Justin have been doing, and also how receptive the Development Academy boys have been in wanting to increase their knowledge and make themselves better footballers. The majority of the Development Academy are also about to commence their first session of the Certificate 3 in Sport (Career-Oriented Program). The program will run for 10 sessions including activities such as cooking lessons, financial advice, resume writing, social media education and networking. The program will be AFL related in every instance and be a great asset to our young playing list. FIDA Williamstown Football Club & Football Williamstown is delighted to announce that a new team will be playing under the Football Williamstown banner in 2011.The team will be known as the Williamstown Seagulls FIDA. FIDA is the acronym for Football Integration Development Association which is a competition for people with an intellectual disability. Playing in the iconic Royal Blue and Gold sash strip, the Williamstown Seagulls will be based at the Fearon Reserve where they will train on Wednesday nights. Matches are normally played on Sundays at the Royal Park complex but we will be playing a couple of home games at the Fearon on Sundays when possible. The team was previously known as the Broadmeadows Kangaroos and have been in existence since 1991 but lack of community support led to a decision being taken to disband the team after the 2010 season. However, as most of the players come from the Western Suburbs and the team was managed through Rosamond Special School, an approach was made to WFC which immediately offered its support through Football Williamstown. Within the space of a couple of months a Steering Committee is in place and the team has been resurrected. The Williamstown Seagulls FIDA is ready to take its place alongside the other clubs and teams that make up Football Williamstown.

Youth Girls Side

The Williamstown Football Club along with Football Williamstown and the Williamstown Junior Football Club are delighted to announce the formation of a brand new football side for 2011 and beyond. After months of hard work it is with great pleasure that we can announce that a Williamstown Youth Girls Side will participate in the AFL Victoria Youth Girls competition. This new team now allows girls aged between 13 and 18 in Williamstown to play football in a fun, competitive environment. As part of the Williamstown Junior Football Club, the newly formed side will train at Bayside College on a weekly basis. Games will be played at a central location each week. About the Youth Girls Competition: The Youth Girls competition is all about fun, fitness, friendship through football in a family friendly environment. The Youth Girls competition is a community football competition specifically designed to promote a female football friendly environment for girls aged between 13 and 18 years. Run at central venues around and beyond, the competition continues to expand to provide more playing opportunities for girls under the age of 18. The competition is managed by AFL Victoria and is supported by local councils, the AFL, VicHealth and the Department of Sport and Recreation Victoria. It welcomes teams and players from government and non government schools, football clubs and leagues and all girls wishing to have a go at footy in their very own competition. A call for support While a lot of hard work has been done to get the team to this point, continued community support is required to make this team successful. As with any football team, we require support from sponsors and the local community. As you can imagine there are significant start up costs with a brand new side with the need to purchase new jumpers, team uniforms, equipment, etc. Any potential business wanting to assist with the newly created side will receive generous exposure through local media as well as connecting with over 1000 families in Williamstown through the Football Williamstown network. Hospitality benefits and advertising through the Williamstown Football Club will also be included in any sponsorship packages. This unique opportunity presents a great chance to be involved with football in Williamstown in a completely new market space. By supporting the Williamstown Youth Girls Side you will be providing a platform for youth participation and encouraging female participation in a friendly family environment. Any organisation interested in supporting this initiative should call Chris Dixon from the Williamstown Football Club on (03) 9391 0309 or email [email protected]. The recruiting drive for players has been in full swing and we are delighted to have a commitment from many of the girls already. Courtney Baka and Lana Cubitt who are teachers at Mount St. Jospeh’s Altona have accepted the role as Coaches of the Youth Girls Side and fellow teacher Gavin Deller will act as the Team Manager. Lorraine Elliott who is the mother of Williamstown High School student, Hana, will also have a major role in assisting the team in 2011. Any other girls interested in playing should contact Chris Dixon on (03) 9391 0309 or Football Williamstown Chairman Bill Deller on 0408 033 797.

Chris Dixon - Football / Development Manager THE WORD FROM WILLIAMSTOWN— MAR 2011 Page 5 Check us out at williamstown.aflvic.com.au FOOTBALL WILLIAMSTOWN HISTORY Football Williamstown was formed in 2010 with the aim of promoting the game of Australian Football and the clubs that service the game in the suburb of Williamstown, and to foster reciprocal community involvement and participation. A Steering Committee comprising representatives of the four Australian Football clubs in Williamstown, the Williamstown Football Club, Williamstown CYMS Amateur Football Club, Williamstown Juniors Football Club and Footscray District Superules Football Club, was formed in March 2010 and held it’s inaugural meeting on 1 April 2010. The Steering Committee developed the following statement;

WHAT IS FOOTBALL WILLIAMSTOWN? Football Williamstown is an Alliance of the clubs that service the game of Australian Football in Williamstown: Williamstown Football Club, Williamstown CYMS Amateur Football Club, Williamstown Juniors Football Club and Footscray District Superules Football Club.

WHAT IS ITS MISSION? Football Williamstown exists to; - Promote the game of Australian Football - Support the clubs that service the game - Foster mutually beneficial relationships between the clubs and the wider community of Williamstown

WHAT WILL IT DO? Football Williamstown will promote the game of Australian Football throughout the community of Williamstown using the local media, service clubs, industry and commerce, schools and organisations representing those sectors of the community that are underrepresented in the football family; females, the handicapped, the elderly and the marginalised. Football Williamstown will facilitate support for the clubs that service the game throughout the community of Williamstown, through the sharing of ideas, information, resources, facilities and opportunities. It will provide the means by which a unified collective approach can be taken in successfully dealing with many of the issues that the Clubs face. Football Williamstown will foster mutually beneficial relationships between the Clubs and the wider Williamstown community through the delivery of programs that will engage the elderly, the young and the marginalised. The program will encourage their involvement in local football clubs as players, administrators, volunteers and / or supporters, and create opportunities for them to develop their life skills, knowledge and experiences and / or put them to further use. Involvement in local football clubs offers inclusivity, a sense of belonging, shared goals, shared commitment to a common cause, integration, physical activity, social intercourse, cultural awareness and understanding, and opportunities to develop social and life skills. Football clubs transcend the barriers of age, gender, disability, ethnicity and promote teamwork, respect for common property and resources, physical fitness and healthy lifestyle, positive attitudes, discipline, responsibility and accountability.

12 MONTHS ON Football Williamtown has played a key role in providing sections of the community with the opportunity to play football that did not previously exist by establishing two new teams, the Williamstown Seagulls FIDA and the Williamstown Seagulls Youth Girls Team. FIDA is an acronym for Football Integration Development Association which is a competition for people with an intellectual disability. The team had its first training at the Fearon Reserve in February 2011. Williamstown Football Club has provided generous support to ensure that the team is properly equipped in the Gold and Blue playing strip and has provided extensive administrative support.

In addition, both Williamstown CYMS and Williamstown Superules have embraced the FIDA team by extending the hand of friendship and providing guidance and support to ensure that the fabulous FIDA Seagulls are fully integrated into the Williamstown Football community. The Youth Girls Team will also play in the Gold and Blue strip and be known as the Williamstown Seagulls. Williamstown Football Club has again provided generous support ensuring that the team is properly equipped and has the necessary administrative support.

The Williamstown Juniors Football Club has welcomed the Youth Girls Team into its club which will ensure the girls are also fully integrated into the Williamstown Football community.

Football Williamstown also played an influential role in the resurrection of the ailing Williamstown Under 18 team. On the brink of disbanding after the 2010 season, the once mighty Willy Under 18Ms looked doomed. Under the auspices of Football Williamstown, and with great leader- ship from Williamstown Football Club, a Joint Steering Committee was formed comprising personnel from the CYMS and the Juniors and a rescue plan was developed and implemented. Under the guidance of Manager Steve McHugh and coach Mathew Montebello, the team is up and running and will play in the VAFA . With over 30 players registered to date, all the vital signs are strong and the team is on its way to regain- ing its former glory.

Football Williamstown has developed close links with the following organisations; Hobsons Bay City Council Williamstown Chamber of Commerce Rotary Club of Point Gellibrand The Williamstown, Newport and Spotswood Liquor Accord

and is most grateful for their support as it is through working with these organisations that Football Williamstown will achieve its objective of fostering a mutually beneficial relationship with the wider community of Williamstown.

On that basis season 2011 continues to offer Gulls members great value for their membership. HOME GAMES AT WERRIBEE (AVALON AIRPORT OVAL) - I had a meeting with Werribee FC CEO and they have the “Blue Room” which is located on ground level under the social rooms. It is well set up with a bar, tables and chairs, pie warmer and will act as the Gulls Supporters Group room for our home games in 2011. FUNDRAISING - with the 3 major home games being played at Torquay, Wangaratta & Keilor, we can channel all our energies into manning these 3 matches where we expect very large crowds. We require at least 6 Gulls members to help with the gate effort at each of these games so please let us know if you are available to assist. Throughout the year we can perhaps run a fundraiser at one of the local watering holes in Williamstown - e.g Trivia night. We can get some of the venues for free so its just a matter of putting together costs for prizes etc. This will help make up for lost revenue that will occur during the redevelopment of Burbank Oval. The club, under senior coach Alan ‘Oopy’ Elliott, is looking forward to improving on its fifth placed finish in season 2010 and over the summer has continued the experience of the past several seasons by attracting a significant number of talented younger players from the local area. With an average age significantly less than twenty-five the senior core still has its best football ahead of it and 2011 offers a tantalizing challenge to a group that has had a taste of success after gaining promotion to higher grades with back to back premierships in 2008 & 2009. The CYs will again field three open aged teams in the VAFA and this allows for over nearly 100 players to be accommodated over the course of the season.
