Mohankumar Coordinator Associate/collaborating Environmental Resources Research Centre (ERRC), institution, if any Thiruvananthapuram Nature of project R&D/Consultancy/Implementation monitoring/ Quality Audit/EIA/EMP/Resource audit/mapping Area/Location Yelkanna River, a tributary of River Shiriya; Seethangoli in Kasaragod District, Kerala Status Completed (2009) Duration Six Months Date of Initiation May 2009 Date of completion December 2009 Brief description of the The KINFRA Small Industries Park at Seethangoli in project (objectives, Kasaragod District, Kerala proposed to utilize the surface approach and salient flow of Yelkanna River (a tributary of River Shiriya), for findings/recommendations) meeting it’s industrial and domestic water uses. The scheme envisaged to utilize the yield from a watershed area of about 200 sq. km by constructing three check dams/weirs across Yelkanna. A 7.5 km long pipeline proposed from the pump house (proposed on the left bank) to the storage tanks (two tanks with storage capacity of 1.2 million liters and 0.5 million liters respectively proposed within the KINFRA Small Industries Park premises) would constitute the water conductor system. The entire route of the pipeline was planned along the existing PWD road and thus required no land acquisition. Since the flood level of proposed weirs was designed within the normal flood level of the river, the project avoided land submergence and thereby land use alteration. Further, the pump house was planned in the riverine puramboke land on the left bank of the river. The baseline environmental characteristics of the project area and surroundings were analyzed through field surveys and with reference to secondary data gathered from authentic sources. The impacts were assessed with respect to the project components/proposed actions and the baseline environmental features, and suitable mitigation measures were suggested. .

  • Introduction
7 CHAPTER Introduction Over the last few months, the world economy has been showing alarming signs of fragility and instability. Economic growth has been sluggish with protracted unemployment, fiscal uncertainty and subdued business and consumer sentiments. Growth in high income countries is projected to be weak as they struggle to repair damaged financial sectors and badly stretched financial sheets. 1.2 Global economic growth started to decelerate on a broad front in mid-2011 and this trend is expected to stretch well into 2012 and 2013. The United Nations base line forecast for the growth of world gross product (WGP) is 2.6% for 2012 and 3.2% for 2013, which is below the pre-crisis pace of global growth. 1.3 It is expected that the US economy will grow at about 2% with modest growth in exports. Persistent high unemployment and low wage growth have been holding back aggregate demand and together with the prospects of prolonged depressed housing prices, this has heightened risks of a new wave of home foreclosures in the United States. However, employment data for December 2011 and January 2012 have been encouraging with signs of revival in business confidence. On the other hand, as far as the Euro Zone is concerned, high deficit and debt continue to prevail. The Euro Zone experienced a period of declining output, high unemployment and subdued private consumption. However, the business climate indicator increased for the first time in ten months and inflation rate fell from 3% to 2.8 % in December. In order to boost investment, the European Central Bank flooded banks with low cost loans and there was improvement in demand.

V. Neethu1* and R. Miriam2 1*Center for Natural Hazards and Disaster Studies, University of Madras, Chennai, India. 2Department of Geography, Nirmala College for Women, Coimbatore, India. ABSTRACT The excessive use of pesticides in agriculture has an adverse impact on human health and the environment. Environmental health problems vary from region to region, reflecting the geography, climate and the level of economic development. Many health problems are associated with poverty and lack of fundamental resources. The aerial spraying of pesticides leads to suspension of toxic compounds in the environment. The residue of pesticides accumulates over years which lead to gradual occurrence of diseases. Kasaragod, the northern most district of Kerala, is a lush region with large cashew plantations. The use of pesticides in the cashew plantations has resulted in long term negative impacts on the health of the people living in the vicinity of plantations as well as in remote regions. The affect of pesticides on the health of settlements in remote area has to be understood along with the physiography of the region. The role of physiography in the spread of diseases has been systematically studied and analyzed using GIS technique. The result shows that a large number of victims have been identified in the settlements near to the river banks.
