Ultimate Wolverine vs. HulkBy BrandonFrom what I gather this story takes place alongside or after the events in the Ultimates 2. I would be inclined to say after the Ultimates 2 but I haven't read the Ultimates 2 in quite a while. This was a very interesting story dare I say, a rather unique look at two of the unstoppable if not indestructible characters in the Marvel universe. Ironically both of these characters shared the scene when Wolverine himself was introduced in the comics. But overall I was very mixed on this story. It straddled the fence between an interesting personal journey for both of these characters and a juvenile comedy in many instances. There are moments where the writer could have definitely delved into these characters with symbolism and very deep character moments but right when these moments occur and you can see the parallels, it seems as though a little kid takes over writing and sprays cringe worthy dialogue and furrowed brow scenes that could almost make you laugh but you are too confused to laugh. If you are looking for a deep thought out beautiful gritty take on the Marvel universe like the Ultimate Marvel comics have produced so well in the past, this is not your book. But if you are looking for a juvenile romp through the Ultimate universe then this is your book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An excellent outline for a Hulk/Wolverine movie.By Kindle CustomerI really enjoyed this comic book reprint. Since Fox owns the screen rights to the X-Men all Marvel mutants and Marvel Studios owns the screen rights to Hulk, the Avengers, everything else, we'll never see these characters on screen together. Reading this is like reading a movie story board for a movie that will never happen. The storyline was excellent and mixed a lot of action with sprinkles of Dark humor. The humor is what really worked for me. The 5th star I gave this story was for 2 reasons. 1, I got this during a Cyber Monday sale, so it was cheap. 2, I read each word balloon with the voices of the movie actors in my mind. (Ex. Sam L Jackson as Nick Fury, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, etc.) It was great affect.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. GREAT book, fast pace, high intensity, and interesting story done to perfection!!By nniceThis is a great read. The writing is AWESOME!! Lindelof does a great job of mixing action with story, keeping it fast paced, and keeping it interesting. I love how the book starts, right in the middle of the action, and slowly he starts piecing together the story. Wolverine is the ultimate badass we all love reading. The writer makes it seem effortless and natural, rather than some writers who try too hard to convince the reader that this is indeed the Wolverine we all know and love.Artwork is just as awesome. Francis Yu just kills it, panel after panel. I LOVE some of those dialogue scenes with wolverine, the great writing is taken to the next level by the artwork, he casts all the right shadows, has just the right amount of detail, and second to none when capturing wolverine's expressions. If you can't tell by now, Wolverine is my main guy, and these guys DO NOT DISAPPOINT. I'm not too familiar with hulk, but I think these guys did a great job with him too. They do a great job of showing the different sides of Hulk and really adding some depth to him. Matter of fact, after reading this book, I picked up my first hulk book too. I really wanted to see what this guy was all about, cuz they made him really interesting in this book. All the other characters were done really well too. No one is just there to be there, they all serve a purpose, and they all bring their own flavor to the story.I highly recommend this book. Damon Lindelof, co-creator of the hit TV series LOST teams with superstar artist Leinil Francis Yu to bring their storytelling magic to a tale that will rock the Ultimate Universe! Dr. Bruce Banner has been presumed dead since his execution, following his murderous rampage through Manhattan as the Hulk. But when reports start cropping up of an unidentified creature appearing around the globe, Nick Fury begins to get worried. Not because Banner can turn from man to unstoppable monster in seconds...but because Banner's existence is the one secret that can bring down Fury. Fury turns to the only man he can trust: Wolverine. And he's only too glad to take care of Banner - by any means necessary! Collects Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk #1-6. Not bad, thought a bit angst-y and super-hero-y which, contrary to a cover blurb I thought was what Wolverine used to be. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. I don't like the choice of subtitle for this series.

Panel Title: Her Own Heroine: Feminism and Diversity in the Comic Book Industry Moderator: Patricia B. Worrall, Ph.D. English Department University of North Georgia [email protected] First Speaker: Veronica Harris English Department University of North Georgia [email protected] Title: “Breaking the Mold: Ororo Munroe and the Entertainment Industry” Proposal: Throughout the history and development of comic books, there has been adaptations of the characters to different media venues. Storm, or Ororo Munroe, is no exception. She comes from the African country of Kenya born to a native woman and American man. Her mother comes from a line of priestesses said to hold mystical powers to protect their tribes. At a young age, she experiences a tragic plane crashing into her home, which traps her under her mother’s body and rubble. She develops claustrophobic tendencies, which awaken her powers. Later in life, she comes to teach at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, i.e. mutants, and becomes one of the most powerful X-Men. Representations of Storm occur in many different forms of visual media, such as movies and comics. However, the medium of film limits the development of her backstory and heritage because of the film industry’s shift to an emphasis and focus on white males taken from comics. This shift has resulted in restricting and restraining women of color. On the other hand, cartoons, such as Wolverine and the X-Men and X-Men Evolution , do provide some space for her. Although even in comic space restricts and restrains women of color and becomes analogous to Storm’s claustrophobia.

  • Avengers Dissemble! Transmedia Superhero Franchises and Cultic Management
Taylor 1 Avengers dissemble! Transmedia superhero franchises and cultic management Aaron Taylor, University of Lethbridge Abstract Through a case study of The Avengers (2012) and other recently adapted Marvel Entertainment properties, it will be demonstrated that the reimagined, rebooted and serialized intermedial text is fundamentally fan oriented: a deliberately structured and marketed invitation to certain niche audiences to engage in comparative activities. That is, its preferred spectators are often those opinionated and outspoken fan cultures whose familiarity with the texts is addressed and whose influence within a more dispersed film- going community is acknowledged, courted and potentially colonized. These superhero franchises – neither remakes nor adaptations in the familiar sense – are also paradigmatic byproducts of an adaptive management system that is possible through the appropriation of the economics of continuity and the co-option of online cultic networking. In short, blockbuster intermediality is not only indicative of the economics of post-literary adaptation, but it also exemplifies a corporate strategy that aims for the strategic co- option of potentially unruly niche audiences. Keywords Marvel Comics superheroes post-cinematic adaptations Taylor 2 fandom transmedia cult cinema It is possible to identify a number of recent corporate trends that represent a paradigmatic shift in Hollywood’s attitudes towards and manufacturing of big budget adaptations. These contemporary blockbusters exemplify the new industrial logic of transmedia franchises – serially produced films with a shared diegetic universe that can extend within and beyond the cinematic medium into correlated media texts. Consequently, the narrative comprehension of single entries within such franchises requires an increasing degree of media literacy or at least a residual awareness of the intended interrelations between correlated media products.

American marten, fisher, lynx, and wolverine: survey methods for their detection. Gen. Tech. Rep. PSW-GTR-157. Albany, CA: Pacific Southwest Research Station, Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture; 163 p. The status of the American marten (Martes americana), fisher (Martes pennanti), lynx (Lynx canadensis), and wolverine (Gulo gulo) is of increasing concern to managers and conservationists in much of the western United States. Because these species are protected throughout much of their range in the west, information on population status and trends is unavailable from trapping records. This report describes methods to detect the four species using either remote photography, track plates, or snow tracking. A strategy for systematic sampling and advice on the number of devices used, their deployment, and the minimum sampling duration for each sampling unit are provided. A method for the disposition of survey data is recommended such that the collective results of multiple surveys can describe regional distribution patterns over time. The report describes survey methods for detection only but also provides some considerations for their use to monitor population change. • Reflections on the Three Ultimates and the Mystery of Creativity: in Dialogue with John B. Cobb, Jr. and Bob Mesle*
1 Reflections on the Three Ultimates and the Mystery of Creativity: In Dialogue with John B. Cobb, Jr. and Bob Mesle* Tokiyuki Nobuhara Introduction: I have just completed my Japanese translation of C. Robert Mesle, Process Theology: A Basic Introduction.1 As is kindly manifested in the Preface to the Japanese Edition, I have had the honor of receiving a request from Dr. Bob Mesle, the author of this book (whose Japanese translation is re-entitled The Basis of Process Theology: A Novel and Intelligible Introduction), to write a response to two additional essays contained in the Japanese edition: Chapter 19, written by John Cobb, “On The Three Ultimates: God, Creativity, and the World,” and Chapter 20, written by Bob Mesle himself, “A Spiritual Autobiography.” I was more than willing to respond with all my capabilities to this thoughtful request which is expressive of an open stance of theologizing peculiar to him. Thus, I have written Chapter 21 “Reflections on the Three Ultimates: From the Perspective of a Theology of Loyalty,” which is the original essay out of which I am in the process of producing the present one. As the translator, I am thinking of writing my summary of the major contents of the book in the Translator’s Postscript. But presently in the original essay, I intended to confine myself to writing succinct reflections on the “three ultimates” from “the perspective of a theology of loyalty,” which is a long-standing theological thesis of mine. With this intention in mind, I have then proceeded to concentrate on the focus of my recent academic concern, which is to find a solution to “the mystery of creativity.” I am basing the present essay on the original one but want to make it more articulate in order to pursue and elucidate as much as possible the question as to why what I call “the mystery of creativity” is internally related to the adequacy of reflections on the three ultimates (i.e., God, creativity, and the world).

Through an analysis of the adaptation process of Marvel Entertainment’s superhero franchise from comics to film, I argue that a hegemonic American model of militarization has been used by Hollywood as a discursive formation with which to transform niche properties into mass market products. I consider the locations of narrative ambiguities in two key comics texts, The Ultimates (2002-2007) and The New Avengers (2005-2012), as well as in the film The Avengers (2012), and demonstrate the significant reorientation of the film franchise towards the American military’s “War on Terror”. While Marvel had attempted to produce film adaptations for decades, only under the new “militainment” discursive formation was it finally successful.

Through an analysis of the adaptation process of Marvel Entertainment’s superhero franchise from comics to film, I argue that militarization has been used by Hollywood as a discursive formation with which to transform niche properties into mass market products. I consider the locations of narrative ambiguities in two key comics texts, The Ultimates (2002-2007) and The New Avengers (2005-2012), as well as in the film The Avengers (2011), and demonstrate the significant reorientation towards the military of the film franchise. While Marvel had attempted to produce film adaptations for decades, only under the new “militainment” discursive formation was it finally successful. I argue that superheroes are malleable icons, known largely by the public by their image and perhaps general character traits rather than their narratives. Militainment is introduced through a discourse of realism provided by Marvel Studios as an indicator that the property is not just for children.
