And finally, thank you to my devoted partner Jamie and to my mother, for all of your support and patience. 2 Abstract The aim of this thesis was to investigate the role of television news media in maintaining cultural hegemony in the United States. The financial crisis of 2008 and 2009 was used as a window into this process. For this investigation, a qualitative frame analysis was conducted on samples of television news coverage from major moments during the financial crisis and the resulting economic recession. Additionally, peer group discussions were conducted as a window into how people who fit the social and cultural imaginary of “Middle America,” an important part of the historic bloc which forms the contemporary United States cultural hegemony, discussed the financial crisis and recession in a social context. The results found five major explanatory frames which dominated coverage of the financial crisis; strategy- game frame, survivor stories, bootstraps frame, opportunity in disaster, and populism. Taken in aggregate, these frames directed attention away from the actions of the economic elite and onto either the actions of politicians or the responsibilities of non-elite individuals. Moreover, these frames deprived the information environment of information which might otherwise facilitate an understanding of the financial crisis as resulting from the actions and practices of the business elite or the economic structure. Participants in the peer group discussions seemed to echo much of the picture provided by television media, demonstrating in particular a pervasive belief in a dysfunctional American government. Overall, participants struggled to demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the financial crisis, and this hindered their ability to form and express counter-ideologies. This was in spite of pervasive, emotional expression of betrayal, dissatisfaction and economic vulnerability. Overall, it is concluded that television news media functions as a hegemonic apparatus due to its practices producing frames and narratives which obscure the role of the capitalist classes even in the Paeth The paroxysms of economic pain through which the world has been suffering for the past four years offer any number of possible vectors for analysis—from economic theory, to public policy, to sociology, to international affairs. An examination of the economic crisis through any of these lenses would reveal a great deal both about how we’ve come to be here, and how we might (or might not) find our way out of it. The “Great Recession” is almost unique in modern political economics: a large- scale, catastrophic global economic meltdown, which may well persist for some time to come.1 There have, of course, been other economic crises, discussion recessions of greater or lesser duration, as well as global crises, such as the so-called “Asian Flu” of the mid- 1990s, but the Great Recession has come to be so named because its impact has been unlike anything the world has experienced since the 1930s (see Krugman 2008; Reich 2010; Stiglitz 2010).     The Tea Party Movement The Tea Party movement is a broad American political movement launched in 2009 through a series of protests against government spending and taxation. It has enjoyed great success and considerable media attention in its relatively short existence. The organization cemented its position in the United States’ political landscape during the 2010 midterm elections, when several self-identified Tea Party political candidates won seats in the US House and Senate. The Tea Party movement utilizes elements and images from the American Revolutionary period, such as an early flag design bearing the motto “Don’t Tread on Me,” as an expression of its efforts to reform the federal government according to the ideals of the nation’s founders. Tea Party supporters generally favor lower taxes, limited government, and reduced federal spending. The Boston Tea Party and Fiscal Conservatism The Tea Party movement takes its name from the Boston Tea Party, an event many recognize as an important precursor to the American Revolution. In 1773, the region that would become the United States consisted of thirteen colonies under British rule. Even though the colonies were subject to control by the British Parliament, the colonies were not represented in Parliament by their own lawmakers. Instead, colonial assemblies were created to enforce the decisions of the British Parliament. By law, all tea entering the American colonies had to be imported from England. In 1767, the British government began levying a tax on all tea imported into the colonies, meaning colonial distributors were forced to pay money directly to the British government if they wanted to sell tea.
