INTERNATIONAL MILITARY CARTRIDGE RIFLES AND BAYONETS The following table lists the most common international military rifles, their chambering, along with the most common bayonet types used with each. This list is not exhaustive, but is intended as a quick reference that covers the types most commonly encountered by today’s collectors. A Note Regarding Nomenclature: The blade configuration is listed, in parentheses, following the type. There is no precise dividing line between what blade length constitutes a knife bayonet vs. a sword bayonet. Blades 10-inches or shorter are typically considered knife bayonets. Blades over 12-inches are typically considered sword bayonets. Within the 10-12 inch range, terms are not consistently applied. For purposes of this chart, I have designated any blade over 12 inches as a sword bayonet. Argentine versions tend to have slightly different parts measurements than Belgian-made FALs due to local manufacturing methods; therefore, most parts of the FSL series are not interchangeable with more standard FALs. The Fusil Automatico Liviano Modelo IV (FALM IV) is an Argentine-made copy of the Belgian FAL Model 50-00. It is virtually identical to the FAL, but is heavier and has a more substantial muzzle brake. The Fusil Automatico Liviano Modelo Para III (FALMP III) is virtually identical to the FAL 50-64, but again is longer and heavier, with a longer muzzle brake. -

Brownells BenchTalk - FAL Magic FAL Rules This article deals with the laws surrounding the FN/FAL what's required to build one within the laws as they stand. Primarily chambered in .308 Winchester (7.62 x 54 mm NATO) this outstanding rifle's acceptance by military organizations the world over is only one proof of its capability and ruggedness. Even though the FAL has now been replaced by lighter, more advanced battle rifles, it remains one of the pinnacles of automatic rifle design. As a sporting rifle, the FAL was only imported into the U.S. for a very short time by Browning Arms. It was sold as a semi- automatic rifle but the BATF thought that it was too easily converted into a selective fire weapon so imports of complete, sporting rifles were halted. But, because of the large and surplus availability of FAL rifles, there has been an ongoing supply of what is known as FAL Kits coming into the U.S. for the last, several years. The first kits to hit these shores were made up of Inch Pattern parts from Great Britain, Canada and Australia. The latest Kits are Metric Pattern parts that come here from all over the world. These kits contain everything you need to assemble a FAL except the upper receiver which is the serial numbered part. Domestically produced upper receivers are now made by a number of manufacturers. Brownells carries domestically- produced semi-automatic receivers from D.S. Arms and a foreign-produced receiver from Pacific Armament that is made by Imbel of Brazil. -
Importation of Fn Fal Type Receivers for Unrestricted Commercial Sale
26 USC 5844, 18 USC 922(o), 22 USC 2778: IMPORTATION OF FN FAL TYPE RECEIVERS FOR UNRESTRICTED COMMERCIAL SALE An ATF-approved method of destruction for the FN FAL type machinegun will result in the severed portions of the receiver being importable for unrestricted commercial sale. ATF Rul. 2003–2 The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has received inquiries about modifications necessary to the receiver of an FN FAL type machinegun to make it importable under 26 U.S.C. 5844 and 18 U.S.C. 922(o) for unrestricted commercial sale. The FN FAL is a machinegun as defined in 26 U.S.C. 5845(b). The receiver of an FAL is also a machinegun as defined. Various manufacturers made FAL style machineguns in caliber 7.62x51mm (.308). The FAL is a gas-operated, shoulder-fired, magazine-fed, selective-fire machinegun. Section 5844 of Title 26, United States Code, makes it unlawful to import any firearm into the United States, unless the firearm to be imported or brought in is: (1) being imported for use by the United States or any department, independent establishment, or agency thereof or any State or possession or any political subdivision thereof; or (2) the firearm is being imported for scientific or research purposes; or (3) it is being imported solely for testing or use as a model by a registered manufacturer or solely for use as a sample by a registered importer or dealer. Additionally, the Secretary may permit the conditional importation of a firearm for examination and testing in connection with classifying the firearm. -
