Report on Environmental, Social and Economic Impacts of Madan Bhandari Highway DECEMBER 17, 2019 NEFEJ Lalitpur Executive Summary The report of the eastern section of Madan Bhandari Highway was prepared on the basis of Hetauda-Sindhuli-Gaighat-Basaha-Chatara 371 km field study, discussion with the locals and the opinion of experts and reports. •During 2050's,Udaypur, Sindhuli and MakwanpurVillage Coordination Committee opened track and constructed 3 meters width road in their respective districts with an aim of linking inner Madhesh with their respective headquarters. In the background of the first Madhesh Movement, the road department started work on the concept of alternative roads. Initially, the double lane road was planned for an alternative highway of about 7 meters width. The construction of the four-lane highway under the plan of national pride began after the formation of a new government of the federal Nepal on the backdrop of the 2072 blockade and the Madhesh movement. The Construction of Highway was enunciated without the preparation of an Environmental Impact Assessment Report despite the fact that it required EIA before the implementation of the big physical plan of long-term importance. Only the paper works were done on the study and design of the alternative highway concept. The required reports and construction laws were abolished from the psychology that strong reporting like EIA could be a hindrance to the roads being constructed through sensitive terrain like Chure (Siwalik). • During the widening of the roads, 8 thousand 2 hundred and 55 different trees of community forest of Makwanpur, Sindhuli and Udaypur districtsare cut.

  • Understanding Psychological Distress Among Mothers in Rural Nepal: A
Clarke et al. BMC Psychiatry 2014, 14:60 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-244X/14/60 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Understanding psychological distress among mothers in rural Nepal: a qualitative grounded theory exploration Kelly Clarke1*, Naomi Saville1, Bishnu Bhandari2, Kalpana Giri2, Mamita Ghising2, Meena Jha3, Sonali Jha2, Jananee Magar4, Rinku Roy2, Bhim Shrestha2, Bhawana Thakur2, Rinku Tiwari2, Anthony Costello1, Dharma Manandhar2, Michael King5, David Osrin1 and Audrey Prost1 Abstract Background: There is a large burden of psychological distress in low and middle-income countries, and culturally relevant interventions must be developed to address it. This requires an understanding of how distress is experienced. We conducted a qualitative grounded theory study to understand how mothers experience and manage distress in Dhanusha, a low-resource setting in rural Nepal. We also explored how distressed mothers interact with their families and the wider community. Methods: Participants were identified during a cluster-randomised controlled trial in which mothers were screened for psychological distress using the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). We conducted 22 semi-structured interviews with distressed mothers (GHQ-12 score ≥5) and one with a traditional healer (dhami), as well as 12 focus group discussions with community members. Data were analysed using grounded theory methods and a model was developed to explain psychological distress in this setting. Results: We found that distress was termed tension by participants and mainly described in terms of physical symptoms. Key perceived causes of distress were poor health, lack of sons, and fertility problems. Tension developed in a context of limited autonomy for women and perceived duty towards the family.

Environmental Assessment Document Initial Environmental Examination Loan Number: 2102 NEP August 2009 Nepal: Community-Managed Irrigated Agricultural Sector Project Parwanipur Kalinjor Irrigation Sub-Project, Sarlahi Prepared by the Government of Nepal The Environmental Assessment is a document of the borrower. The views expressed herein do not necessarily represent those of ADB’s Board of Directors, Management, or staff, and may be preliminary in nature. Appendix J : Initial Environmental Examination INITIAL ENVIRONMENTAL EXAMINATION PARWANIPUR KALINJOR IRRIGATION SUB-PROJECT, SARLAHI DISTRICT. I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1. This initial environmental examination (IEE) was undertaken for the Parwanipur Kalinjor Irrigation Subproject under Community Managed Irrigated Agriculture Sector Project under ADB Loan 2102 NEP to meet the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) requirements for environmental assessment process and documentation prior to Subproject approval, following the procedures in ADB’s Environmental Assessment Guidelines (2003), and the Project’s Environmental Assessment and Review Procedures. 2. The subproject does not pass through any environmentally sensitive ecological area. It is the rehabilitation of the existing irrigation scheme where the system is already in operation since many years. Apart from some construction related impacts, the subproject will have minimal impact on the environment. Hence the subproject has been categorized under Category B as per the Environment Assessment Policy, 2002. 3. This Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) was based on data collected during the Joint Walkthrough Survey. The objective of the IEE is to analyze the adverse environmental impacts arising from site selection, design, construction and operation of the subproject. The mitigation of any such effect to acceptable levels was sought through implementation of a set of clearly defined and costed mitigation measures which have been included in the cost estimates.

Food and nutrition security in the rural plains of Nepal: Impact of the global food price crisis A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University College London Nasima Akhter Centre for International Health and Development UCL Institute of Child Health 30 Guildford Street London WC1N 1EH Declaration I, Nasima Akhter, Confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ------------------------------------------ Nasima Akhter August 2012 2 Dedication I dedicate my thesis to all brave women who want to stand tall and live a life of aspiration to fulfil their dreams, who encourage others to achieve more in life and help to make the world a better place. 3 Abstract Background: Poverty and food insecurity are often associated and may lead to malnutrition. All three remain high in Nepal and may have been aggravated by the 2008 food price crisis. Methods to measure changes in food and nutrition security and track the localised impact of changes in global food prices required further development so as to provide better guidance to policy makers. Aim: To describe and compare measures of poverty and food security in Dhanusha District, Nepal, derived from the Household Economy Approach (HEA) and Household Surveillance Data (HSD), and assess changes in food prices and the affordability of a nutritionally adequate diet among different wealth groups in before, during, and after the 2008 food price crisis. Methods: HEA baseline data collected in 2006 was used to describe livelihoods, food insecurity, and food prices in Dhanusha.

No.: Kathmandu, Nepal Foreword Nepal has made significant progress in achieving good results in school enrolment by having more children in school over the past decade, in spite of the unstable situation in the country. However, there are still many challenges related to equity when the net enrolment data are disaggregated at the district and school level, which are crucial and cannot be generalized. As per Flash Monitoring Report 2014- 15, the net enrolment rate for girls is high in primary school at 93.6%, it is 59.5% in lower secondary school, 42.5% in secondary school and only 8.1% in higher secondary school, which show that fewer girls complete the full cycle of education.
