At the same time, I discuss the way in which the Gothic elements that permeate the novel fittingly double and deepen the critique of contemporary educational establishments and professors. Keywords : academic satire, the Gothic, university of excellence, literary trends, academic superstars, privatization of universities “People who come downstairs from Ivory Towers splash straight into the gutter.” (Smith 156) Whether it brings to light the vibrant life of the academic community with a certain degree of veracity or, on the contrary, it distorts the image of the scholastic environment to the point of grotesque, the contemporary academic novel can be read as “a fun-house mirror held up to the nature of our colleges and universities, one that, for all its grotesquerie, packs a American, British and Canadian Studies / 88 good deal of truth within its pages” (Pinsker 183).

  • Joe Hill’S Horns
Book Review: Joe Hill’s Horns Even if you’re not a fan of horror, you’ve heard of Stephen King. It’s hard not to, as he has written more books than most any other three authors put together, and currently sits atop his own publishing house, scribbling away on napkins that somehow morph into bestsellers every few months. But this is about the son of the King, Joe Hill. You might know that name because the TV show “NOS4A2,” based on his book, has been filming here recently. He writes under a psuedonym to avoid cashing in on his father’s success, but that’s hard to do when your dad can point to a piece of paper and turn it into money. I didn’t read NOS4A2 because I don’t have an interest in the sudden swell of vampire fandom, since I’ve been burned before. I did, however, pick up a copy of one of Hill’s earlier entries into the horror genre, Horns, and it is so much fun that Hill made me a fan. The book begins with a simple premise — you know the story — boy meets girl, they fall in love, girl is brutally murdered, they blame boy and boy’s life spirals downward into self-loathing, drinking and despair. Then one day boy wakes up with a pair of horns growing from his head, and everyone around him seems compelled to speak their deepest, darkest secrets to him like they’re having a casual conversation. This leads to the revelation of who killed said girl in the first place, making this book a supernatural horror murder mystery romance.

  • Virginity and the Patristic Tradition; Spenser’S Faerie Queene and the Reformation
Virginity and the Patristic Tradition; Spenser’s Faerie Queene and the Reformation —————— Beatrice Fannon Thesis Submitted in Candidature for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cardiff University —————— July 2012 Summary It has long been recognised that chastity is a problem in Book III of The Faerie Queene. The problem arises in part because the poem does not clearly define chastity but instead ambiguously praises it both as virginity and marital love. Behind the poem, too, lies the problem of Elizabeth with her Protestant virginity sometimes represented in Britomart, sometimes in Belphoebe, but also dangerously Catholic in its iconography. Indeed, wherever we turn in The Faerie Queene there are tangles of meaning. The contention of this thesis is that these problems are not merely surface writings, but stem from the Protestant breach with the Church Fathers and the long history of virginity. That history, I suggest in the main body of the thesis, has been broadly ignored by the critics who, by failing to grasp its theological complexity and development, have failed to produce an adequate platform from which to read the Protestant reformers and The Faerie Queene. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The Introduction examines recent critical discussions of virginity in Spenser, the Middle Ages and patristics, thus working backwards historically to the patristic writings themselves where I offer, in Part I, a detailed examination of the growth of the theological significance of virginity. Part II then looks at the reformers’ attacks on virginity, Luther and Erasmus especially, before turning to a discussion of the troubled meanings of virginity and chastity in Spenser’s epic poem.

THE LORE OF THE UNICORN BY ODELL SHEPARD (1884-1967) 1930 CONTENTS INTRODUCTION CHAPTER I THE GORGEOUS EAST CHAPTER II THE HOLY HUNT CHAPTER III SHAPING FANTASIES CHAPTER IV EAST AND WEST CHAPTER V THE TREASURE OF HIS BROW CHAPTER VI THE BATTLE OF BOOKS CHAPTER VII RUMOURS CHAPTER VIII CONJECTURES CHAPTER IX CERTAINTIES CHAPTER X REFLECTIONS Page 1 THE LORE OF THE UNICORN INTRODUCTION ON the table before me there lies a long straight wand of ivory. Cut to the length of a walking-stick, it is somewhat more than two inches in diameter at the top and it tapers evenly to a blunt point. Smooth-backed ridges, not more than a quarter of an inch in height, spiral round it counter-clockwise, making about two turns and a half between one end and the other. As a whole, it is a twisted spear. One can fancy that it has been taken in powerful hands and wrung, as one wrings a wet cloth. Thomas Fuller, having seen another such ivory wand as this, said excellently that to his dim eyes and at some distance it seemed “like a taper of wreathed waxe”. This walking-stick has been fitted at the upper end with a gilded silver cap which bears the arms of a certain noble house and a motto in Welsh. Four inches below the cap a hole has been bored through the stick—one would say, at first, to receive the cord to which some gentleman of the grand old days attached the silken tassel that adorned his cane.

Similarly, it’s impossible to understand culture in the American South without paying attention to religion: as Holly F. Mathews writes in Women in the South: An Anthropological Perspective, the South is “a diverse geographical region encompassing eleven states and some seventy-five million people,” and part of what distinguishes Southern identity is “this shared religious orientation (Christianity) [that] permeates day-to-day life,” (1).

With Horns, he polishes his well-deserved crown. A twisted, terrifying new novel of psychological and supernatural suspense, Horns is a devilishly original triumph for the Ray Bradbury Fellowship recipient whose story collection, 20th Century Ghosts, was also honored with a Bram Stoker Award—and whose emotionally powerful and macabre work has been praised by the New York Times as, wild, mesmerizing, perversely witty…a Valentine from hell. I think Joe Hill is a talented writer but there were too many inconsistencies in this book. Slight spoilers ahead---This guy has demonic powers and keeps getting his butt kicked?! Cmon thats as bad as superman vs batman. Even a lesser demon would have no problem with a mere mortal no matter how psychotic that person may be. The other reason I deducted a star was the setup of the book was all flashbacks which I dont mind but I thought he was going to try and figure out how he got the horns and with clues figure out what really happened to his girlfriend.

  • “Battle of the Sexes”: the Anti-Heroic Mode and a Shift in the Meaning
Antiheroes in the “Battle of the Sexes”: The Anti-heroic Mode and a Shift in the Meaning of Hegemonic Masculinity in World War I Fiction Sani Chartudomdej A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2017 Reading Committee: Sydney Kaplan, Chair Joseph Butwin Carolyn Allen Program Authorized to Offer Degree: English ©Copyright 2017 Sani Chartudomdej University of Washington Abstract Antiheroes in the “Battle of the Sexes”: The Anti-heroic Mode and a Shift in the Meaning of Hegemonic Masculinity in World War I Fiction Sani Chartudomdej Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Sydney Kaplan Department of English This dissertation explores the connection between anti-heroism and an important change in the meaning of hegemonic masculinity in World War I fiction. Its main goal is to illustrate that the anti-heroic mode, which became widespread in the period during and after the war, is a type of adaptation literature underwent in response to this transformative historical event. The dissertation argues that the change from the heroic to the anti-heroic mode was heavily influenced by post-war disillusionment, which entailed a reevaluation of traditional value systems, including gender roles and expectations. By investigating selected works written by male and female authors, both British and American, through the lens of Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar, this dissertation affirms that the anti-heroic mode marks a remarkable cross not only between the traditional hero and the radical antihero, but also between the hero and heroine themselves. Using Gilbert and Gubar’s framework, this dissertation validates that literary anti-heroism was a product of what is called the “sexual battles,” which suggests the struggle for power in literary space that male and female authors of the war period experienced.

  • Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3
Notes Chapter 1 1. Allen’s choice of Dickens as the “literary” in contrast to King’s populist is interesting, as there have been comparisons between King and Dickens drawn throughout much of King’s career, including Dickens’s long-time dismissal by his contemporary critics as a populist writer pandering to his audience. As fellow writer Peter Straub comments in Jane Ciabattari’s “Is Stephen King a Great Writer?”, King’s “readership is even larger and more inclusive and the similarities between King and Dickens, always visible to those who cared for King’s work, have become all but unavoidable. Both are novelists of vast popularity and enormous bibliographies, both are beloved writers with a pro- nounced taste for the morbid and grotesque, both display a deep interest in the underclass” (qtd. in Ciabattari). Chapter 2 1. The theme of small town secrets is a familiar one for King, a central factor in several of his books. In addition to Jerusalem’s Lot, some of King’s other notable small towns include Castle Rock, Derry, and Haven, all of which are fictional towns in King’s Maine and the settings of several of his novels. 2. Chapter 11 focuses exclusively on King and graphic novels, including an overview of graphic novel conventions and terminology. Chapter 3 1. As Charlotte F. Otten outlines the outcome of Grenier’s case, “The court, rec- ognizing his mental aberration and limited intelligence, sentenced him to life in a monastery for moral and religious instruction. He died there at age twenty, scarcely human” (9).
