But, even while I’ve been WORDS FROM THE straying from the metal path, I still haven’t shared with you all what I’ve been (not so secretly to those who know me) listening to the most in the WIZARD past year. You’ve probably already guessed it by the stench emanating Hey Ottawa - Happy New Year!! from this very zine…. That’s right, crust punk. I’m super pumped for another month packed with great bands, awesome games and AMEBIX are known by many to be delicious handmade perogies – thank you for the grandpappys of crust along with making the House of TARG your destination for entertainment other bands such as HELLBASTARD (who popularized the use of the term and diversion – we are here to serve you. We’ve got a ton of crust as a genre of music with their new ideas comin’ down the pipe for 2016 – please sign up for 1986 demo Ripper Crust). However, our monthly newsletter at www.houseoftarg.com to stay on top unlike the other founders of the genre of new developments and exciting plans - don’t forget to hang like DOOM and HELLBASTARD, their with us on the interwebs in Twitter/FB/Instagram land – super particular style, while it infl uenced many, was never quite replicated by stoked for a peaceful year fi lled with friends, music, games and anyone else. This can be attributed to great food – respect each other and respect the House – virus the fact that other styles within crust 2.0.1.5. has been eliminated - let’s have a great year together!!! punk, like more metal oriented crust (ISKRA, INSTINCT OF SURVIVAL, - YOGI etc), more grindcore infl uenced crust (DISRUPT, AGATHOCLES, etc), to straight raw punk oriented crust with a ton of d-beats (DOOM, DISCLOSE, etc.), can all be easily defi ned and put ABOUT THE COVER into these microgenres. This course situates the activity of listening to punk music in its broader cultural ideologies, such as the DIY (do-it-yourself) ideal, which includes nontraditional musical pedagogy and composition, cooperatively owned performance venues, and underground distribution and circulation practices. Students learn to analyze punk subculture as an alternative social formation and how punk productions confront and are times co-opted by capitalistic logic and normative economic, political and social arrangements. 3. • Angerburning-Issue02
EDITORIAL Well, this is the second issue of 'Anger Burning'! When I set out to create the fanzine earlier in the year, I simply wanted to do what had been done many, many times before but to give my own spin on the format. I have been overwhelmed by the positive responses from people - both fans and bands alike - who loved the zine. The format could do with a little tweaking and this issue shows some of those modifications now. However, I feel that the overall result is pretty much there or thereabouts. It will evolve, I'm sure. In particular, the bands whom I requested an interview of are more than willing to spend their precious time answering my obvious and not-so- obvious questions. I'm no 'Parkinson', but I do like my questions to not be too assuming. That is, to not be afraid to go over old ground where it was needed, as I'm sure that the audience to which AB is aimed at might not necessarily know everything about every band featured. Kudos to anyone who does! The website - which will improve with time I am sure - will be the place for the 'here and now' type of content. I'm thinking album reviews and perhaps personal views of gigs. With that said, I offer an open invitation for all of you to become part of the Anger Burning collective. If you attend a gig or indeed download/buy and album or whatever and feel strongly enough to lay down a few words and rate your experience, do contact the zine on Facebook and send in your words.

Abstract This study reports central points that define the musical genre goregrind. During the 1960s, British hard rock bands and the American guitarist Jimi Hendrix developed a more distorted guitar sound and heavier drums and bass that led to a separation of heavy metal from other blues-based rock. Albums by Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple in 1970 codified the new genre, which was marked by distorted guitar ‘power chords’, heavy riffs, wailing vocals and virtuosic solos by guitarists and drummers. During the 1970s performers such as AC/DC, Judas Priest, Kiss and Alice Cooper toured incessantly with elaborate stage shows, building a fan base for an internationally-successful style.” (Grove Music Online, “Heavy metal”) . “Heavy metal fans became known as ‘headbangers’ on account of the vigorous nodding motions that sometimes mark their appreciation of the music.” (Grove Music Online, “Heavy metal”) . • Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.
