Resources on Racial Justice June 8, 2020 1 7 Anti-Racist Books Recommended by Educators and Activists from the New York Magazine https://nymag.com/strategist/article/anti-racist-reading- list.html?utm_source=insta&utm_medium=s1&utm_campaign=strategist By The Editors of NY Magazine With protests across the country calling for systemic change and justice for the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Tony McDade, many people are asking themselves what they can do to help. Joining protests and making donations to organizations like Know Your Rights Camp, the ACLU, or the National Bail Fund Network are good steps, but many anti-racist educators and activists say that to truly be anti-racist, we have to commit ourselves to the ongoing fight against racism — in the world and in us. To help you get started, we’ve compiled the following list of books suggested by anti-racist organizations, educators, and black- owned bookstores (which we recommend visiting online to purchase these books). They cover the history of racism in America, identifying white privilege, and looking at the intersection of racism and misogyny. We’ve also collected a list of recommended books to help parents raise anti-racist children here. Hard Conversations: Intro to Racism - Patti Digh's Strong Offer This is a month-long online seminar program hosted by authors, speakers, and social justice activists Patti Digh and Victor Lee Lewis, who was featured in the documentary film, The Color of Fear, with help from a community of people who want and are willing to help us understand the reality of racism by telling their stories and sharing their resources.

  • SOLE Letter of Support June 1 2020
CW: Police Brutality, Violence Hi Everyone, We’re writing this email to help spread awareness about the various ways you can help support the current fight against racial injustice and the systemic policing of Black communities. SOLE stands in solidarity with Black students and with the Black community during these current protests demanding justice for the murdering of Black lives by the police institution and white supremacists. Many of our own Latinx communities are plagued with anti-Blackness that not only harms Black people, but contributes to the systemic oppressions of Black lives in our country. Staying neutral or deciding to not support protests and the constant struggle Black lives face every day is an ignorant action that only continues to perpetuate violence against Black people everywhere. We ask that you support in whatever way you can, whether it’s engaging in protests, donating, spreading accurate and helpful information on social media, or self-education. The burden and effort of this ongoing fight should not be solely placed on the shoulders of Black communities. It is crucial that we use any kind of privilege we hold whether it’s financial, racial, etc, to stand and fight alongside Black lives. Get Educated: • Website with more donation resources and a guide to help educate yourselves on the context behind the protests and systemic oppression of black lives. o https://black-lives-matter-b5d64f.webflow.io/ Ways to Support and Get Involved: Demand the sentencing of the four police officers involved in George Floyd’s murder.

  • Dear Campus Community, Our Hearts Are with You All During This
Executive Officers 2020-21, Associated Students Associated Students, University of California Santa Barbara CA 93106 as.ucsb.edu Dear campus community, Our hearts are with you all during this incredibly tumultuous time. We are enduring through a global pandemic, one of the worst economic recessions of all time, and the recent losses of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Tony McDade. These were all human beings whose lives were cut short by state-sanctioned violence and the inaction of our legal systems to rectify the long standing abuse of Black bodies. We recognize that this racial violence is not a handful of isolated incidents by a few “bad apples,” but rather part of an on-going pattern of anti-Blackness entrenched into police forces in the United States. We would like to thank a few of the dedicated student organizers who have done their best to keep our campus community together during this challenging time. Fifth-year student Michael Sanders organized a march on May 30th, and the UCSB Pan Asian Network that assisted with the outreach and equipment for this event. In addition, we would like to thank the UCSB students from the Inland Empire that helped set up the social distancing tape on the grass during the speaking portion of the protest. This peaceful demonstration brought in close to 1,000 people from our UCSB and Isla Vista communities in support of Black lives here on our campus and across our nation. We recognize the deep pain that our Black UCSB students must be feeling. Given the fact that CAPS is underfunded and therefore inadequately equipped to serve Black students, it would be inappropriate for us to push our Black students towards CAPS as the sole campus resource during this painful time.

  • Tepper MBA Black Business Association Statement on the Death
The members of the Black Business Association appreciate all of your emails, messages, and phone calls of support during the past couple of weeks. The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery are the latest examples of the injustice and systematic racial oppression that African Americans face in the United States of America. Particularly striking and relevant to the Tepper community is the Central Park case where Amy Cooper, not only recognized her white privilege over Christian Cooper but then decided to weaponize that privilege by falsely accusing a black man of threatening her life. We know the disproportionately devastating effects that policing has on people of color and policing should never be used as a tool to harm citizens. For hundreds of years, African-Americans have been treated as less than equal, unfairly, and asked to work twice as hard for less wages. Research shows 1 in every 1000 Black men die of police violence, making it a leading cause of death for young Black men. At some point, everyone in the country has to say “enough is enough.” The reality we are living in 2020 should not be our normal and a change must be made. At the very top, the Justice Department has investigated the systemic infiltration of white supremacists into police departments across the country and policy-makers everywhere must reconcile the fact that too many of our citizens are regularly under attack. If you consider yourself an ally to the struggle African-Americans face, this is the time to stand up—SILENCE cannot be the answer.

Minnesota Nonprofit Economy Report COVID-19 IMPACT UPDATE AND MINNESOTA’S RESPONSE TO THE MURDER OF GEORGE FLOYD July 2020 COVID-19 IMPACT AND CIVIL UNREST UPDATE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Minnesota’s response to the murder of George Floyd The spread of COVID-19 continues to present monumental challenges to Minnesota’s public health and infrastructure. On top of a global pandemic, the murder of George Floyd on May 25, an unarmed Black man, by Minneapolis police, triggered massive civil protest and widespread calls for justice. Several nonprofit facilities suffered collateral damage or were destroyed along Lake Street in Minneapolis and University Avenue in St. Paul during May 26-28, including MIGIZI Communications, Springboard for the Arts, MN Photo by Johs Hild transitions charter school, Ananya Dance Theatre, Goodwill, and Park-Nicollet Minneapolis Clinic. Governor Tim Walz ordered 1,700 Minnesota National Guard soldiers activated in Minneapolis and St. Paul to restore order on May 30 after the Minneapolis 3rd precinct police station was burned. While over 1,500 buildings were burned or damaged during the uprising in the Twin Cities, each morning thousands of volunteers began cleanup efforts, with organized contributions of food, legal services for small business, and transportation for people that lost access to nearby grocery stores and pharmacies. The active response at the neighborhood level by nonprofits in the aftermath created and organized clean up and community rebuilding (partial list) -- Take Action Minnesota, COPAL MN, Bryant Neighborhood Organization, Hamline Midway Coalition, and many more. Migizi Communications, whose newly inaugurated building suffered tremendous damages from fire, raised nearly $1 million from 15,000 donors on GiveMN, Facebook, GoFundMe and Migizi’s own website.
