Owned Enterprise Reform
3/22/2019 China is blocking World Bank report calling for changes in economy - The Washington Post The Washington Post Asia & Pacific China is blocking joint World Bank report that calls for state- owned enterprise reform By Anna Fifield March 1 BEIJING — China has delayed the publication of a report on its economy, written in conjunction with the World Bank, as it tries to tone down recommendations about reforming its state-owned enterprises and allowing more market-led principles to reign. The report, titled “New Drivers of Growth in China,” has been ready for a year, according to four people involved in drafting it, but Chinese authorities have not allowed it to be published. The delays underscore the Chinese Communist Party’s extreme sensitivity about its economy as growth rapidly slows, particularly amid a protracted trade war with the United States. Many of the core recommendations of the report echo calls from the United States and other industrialized countries for China to make its trading practices more fair. Beijing’s objections to the report underscore just how difficult it will be for Washington to persuade China to change. “We were trying to put out a road map that would provide China with a sustainable growth path,” said one academic involved in the drafting of the report who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect his ongoing work in China. The report was jointly written by the World Bank and the Development Research Center, an influential think tank under China’s State Council, or cabinet. It was designed to be a follow-up to “China 2030: Building a Modern, Harmonious, and Creative Society,” a 2012 report published before President Xi Jinping took power. -

NOTE D’INTENTION Par Hiromasa Yonebayashi, réalisateur et scénariste Il y a deux ans, Suzuki-san m’a conseillé de lire un livre intitulé When Marnie Was There. -

CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT Solved! the Mystery Motors of the Autosafe “Skypark”…
2 MAR 18 5 APR 18 1 | 2 MAR 18 - 5 APR 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT Solved! The Mystery Motors of the Autosafe “SkyPark”… Huge thanks to a number of you out there who sent me a link to the BBC News article that finally puts the issue I’ve been bleating on about for months (see Filmhouse December and February monthly programme introductions) to bed. Turns out the eight cars that have been trapped in the failed then abandoned automated car park (which is currently being dismantled behind our offices) since it closed in the early 2000s were only ever old bangers brought in to test the automatic parking machinery! Phew! Glad to have gotten to the bottom of that one… Our March programme, as is customary for the time of year, is replete with Oscar® hopefuls, it now being the turn of Lady Bird, Phantom Thread (in 70mm!), A Fantastic Woman, Palme d’Or winner The Square, and The Shape of Water, which continues from February. Awards season is, though, nearly over, as is evidenced by a slew of new films too new to qualify for consideration this year: Lynne Ramsay’s brilliant You Were Never Really Here; Warwick (Samson & Delilah) Thornton’s stunning Aussie ‘western’, Sweet Country, and Wes Anderson’s fabulous Isle of Dogs. And you know what, looking at that list, I’m going to stick my neck out and say that I’m not entirely sure I have ever seen a better line-up of new release cinema, at any one cinema, ever. -

About FAS The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is an independent, nonpartisan think tank that brings to- gether members of the science and policy communities to collaborate on mitigating global catastrophic threats. Founded in November 1945 as the Federation of Atomic Scientists by scientists who built the first atomic bombs during the Manhattan Project, FAS is devoted to the belief that scientists, engineers, and other technically trained people have the ethical obligation to ensure that the technological fruits of their intellect and labor are applied to the benefit of humankind. In 1946, FAS rebranded as the Feder- ation of American Scientists to broaden its focus to prevent global catastrophes. Since its founding, FAS has served as an influential source of information and rigorous, evidence-based analysis of issues related to national security.
