BIS Seed List 2020 2021 Plus Addendum British Iris Society Seed Scheme 2020 – 2021 Seed Distribution Officer: Christine Jarvis 3 Millbrook Close, Blewbury, Didcot, Oxon, OX11 9QL [email protected] 01235 851896 Thank you to all the seed donors who have provided the seed for this BIS Seed Scheme. 1 Members of the British Iris Society may apply for up to 40 packets of seeds. 2 The cost of seeds is £5 for up to 10 packets and £5 for each additional 10 packets (maximum £20). This cost is inclusive of postage and packing. 3 Payment for seed may be made by cheque (in Sterling) payable to the British Iris Society and enclosed with order or online using the PayPal account. 4 Orders should be sent to Christine Jarvis at the above address. An order form can be found at the back of this seed list. 5 A fair division of seeds will be made as soon as possible in January 2021. Requests will be dealt with in the order in which they were received. 6 Please order by number and retain this seed list for reference as seed will only be identified by the number on the packet. 7 Please include a sufficient number of substitutes as some seed is in very short supply. 8 No responsibility can be accepted for the results as seed is obtained from many sources and it is not always possible to check the accuracy of naming. 9 Much of the seed on the list is open pollinated so it cannot be guaranteed to be true to name. Where seed has been collected from a named cultivar, the seedlings are unlikely to be identical to the parent. Where an 'x' appears before the cultivar name only the pod parent is known. The abbreviations 'dip' and ‘tet’ stand for diploid and tetraploid. 10 If you are ordering seeds from outside the UK, please check and comply with your country’s regulations covering seed importation to make sure than any request is not on your country’s list of banned imports. 11 We are not able to supply seeds to any country that requires a phytosanitary certificate for seed importation. 12 Residual seed donated to the 2018 and 2019 schemes is also included in this list and is marked as (2018) or (2019) respectively. 1 THE GENUS IRIS 1. (Iridaceae Juss.) for the flora of Central Asia F. O. KHASSANOV* & N. RAKHIMOVA Abstract: A new conspectus of the genus Iris (including the genera Juno and Iridodictyum) is presented for the rich flora of Central Asia. Two new combinations as well as new epithetha for two species are proposed. Key words: Taxonomy, Iris, Juno, Central Asia, nomenclature. * Correspondence to: [email protected] Introduction ulate bulb tunics. Amazingly that 36 species of Iris are endemic for this area (fig. 1–3). Nomenclature changes has been started by P. WENDELBO (1975). R. KAMELIN (1981) and later on T. Hall During the last 70 years in all floristic revisions for Central et A. SEISUMS (2011) made several new combinations from Juno Asia made by A. I. VVEDENSKY (1941, 1971) section Juno was restoring to Iris. Nevertheless, several taxa needed in nomen- treated as a separated genus. 30 species were mentioned and sev- clature correction as well new ones described recently from this eral new species were newly described in his last revision. In- area. No doubt, that Central Asia can be treated as one of the terestingly enough, that all other genera of Iridaceae (including largest centers of biodiversity of genus Iris L. and proposed con- Iris) has been revised in “Conspectus Florae Asiae Mediae” by spectus given below based on revisions of R.

The Scottish Rock Garden Club SHOW REPORTS STIRLING in Kincardine SHOW 2012 Best Plant in the Show - Forrest Medal Trillium rivale ‘Purple Heart’ shown by Cyril Lafong Fifers win in Fife! The Trillium was part of Cyril's 3 pan entry in Class 1 along with Primula 'Broadwell Milkmaid' and Tecophilaea cyanocrocus leich- tlinii. ' Broadwell Milkmaid' was judged Best Primula, taking the Spiller Trophy and also the Ben Ledi Trophy for Best European plant in the show. The Trillium was Best Non European plant and it won the Institute of Quarrying Quaich. The Bronze Medal and the Fife County Trophy for Most Points in section 2 was won by SRGC President Liz Mills. The show was held this year in Kincardine in Fife in a good venue, an old school which has been converted into a community centre. It is central in the town which is easily reached by road from most parts of Scotland as ‘all roads lead to the Kincardine Bridge’! [ the M90, M80 & M876 anyway!] When it started 30 years ago, the Stirling show was gifted the trophies from then defunct Dun- fermline show, which explains why so many of the trophies have names associated with Fife, Carnegie and min- ing. It is nice to see them being awarded in Fife once more and to Fifers, as Cyril lives in Glenrothes and Liz in Saline. As you can see the show hall was brightly lit and the benches well filled in the new venue. These pictures were taken during judging when it was nice and quiet. The yellow verticals are covers on the iron pillars in the hall.

In the garden, flowers, butterflies and bees are revelling in the sunshine and the house martins, nesting in our eaves, are giving flying displays that surpass those of the Red Arrows. There is an emphasis ( almost a fashion) in horticultural circles at the moment on wild life gardening and wild flower meadows. I have always felt that alpines are the wild flowers of the mountains, whether growing in alpine meadows or nestling in among the rocks. Our Society aims to give an appreciation and thus the protection and conservation of wild flowers and plants all over the world. Perhaps you have just picked up this Newsletter and are new to the Society but whether you have a window pot or a few acres you would be very welcome to join the group and find out how much pleasure, in many different ways, these mountain wild flowers can bring. My thanks to our contributors this year who illustrate how varied our interest in plants can be. Not only did the Taylors give us a wonderful lecture and hands-on demonstration last November but kindly followed it up with an article for the Newsletter, and I hope that many of you, like me, have two healthy little pots of lily seedlings thanks to their generous gift of seeds.

St Andrews Botanic Garden Bob Mitchell In 1889, when the University Botanic Garden was founded, its focus was on teaching botany and natural history. That same focus is very much in evidence today, and with a much wider remit. Education now centres on projects with pre-school nursery groups; primary schools, teaching the curriculum for excellence; senior schools with specialised studies; and adult education classes with lecture series, botanical painting, and hands-on workshops. Biodiversity is the buzz-word in every activity, with hardy plants playing a huge role. The Garden has developed on its present site of 7.28 hectares since 1960, and has a collection of 8,000 taxa growing in a wide range of habitats. Of prime importance is the complex of pools and ponds which link the rock garden (fig. 1) and scree, and the heath and heather garden, to the Scottish native ecological borders. Adjacent are the Rhododendron terraces and the borders containing wild-collected species, especially plants given to us by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh from Joseph Rock’s last expedition to west China in 1947–8. Tree and shrub borders give shelter to the glasshouses and particularly to the herbaceous-plant borders from the strong, prevailing west winds. The regular Bob Mitchell © Fig. 1 The rock garden 46 herbaceous border, which gives flowers from April to the frosts of November, is backed by a Bob Mitchell 200m-long beech hedge. In an © area of full sun, the informal island beds tie in nicely with the flowing lines of the tree and shrub borders (fig.
