Biggest Ever Morris Dancing Fest in Bridlington at Old Town Festival Day on 29Th June Biggest Ever Morris Dancing Fest in Bridlington at Old Town Festival Day on 29th June Bridlington will see the biggest Morris Dancing display ever in the town at the Old Town Festival Day with 6 Morris Dancing Teams known as ‘Sides’ and their musicians, from York, Ripon, Beverley, Hull, Scarborough & Bridlington. Bridlington’s Makara Morris has been invited By the Old Town Association to coordinate displays by all the teams at two main locations at the Festival – Behind the Bayle near Priory Green and at the top of Old Town Market Place, where there are adjacent food stalls. The event on Sunday June 29th is part of the Yorkshire Festival 2014 fringe events programme, the first ever arts festival to precede the Grand Départ of the Tour De France in its 111 history. Bridlington Town Crier David Hinde said: “Visitors to the Festival day will be greeted by a blaze of colours, flowers, garlands, traditional & unique costumes. Never before has Old Town seen such a concentration of Morris Dancers – it’s going to be fabulous!! We hope given the proximity of the Festival to the Hull Gateway that many overseas visitors coming through on their way to the Grand Départ Yorkshire will enjoy the old traditions of this beautiful part of England & its heritage.” 1. Rackaback are a mixed (men and women) Border Morris team based in Hull, East Yorkshire, Traditional Border Morris (big sticks!) Rackaback dance in black with purple and a splash of gold reflecting the association of past Royalty with Hull - Kingston Upon Hull, the Kings Town of Hull. 2. Ripon City Morris Dancers perform dances from the North West of England. This style is traditionally from Lancashire and the adjoining areas of Cheshire, Yorkshire and the Lake District. Ripon City Morris use fresh flowers in their hats, one of only a handful of teams to do so. The hats therefore have to be made up each time they perform and reflect the seasons of the year. 3. The Minster Strays based amidst the Howardian Hlls between York and Pickering. Wearing green, burgundy and gold waistcoats, and colourful tatters, they perform the dances of Old England including elegant dances from the Cotswolds with complex sequences of galleys and capers, together with wild, raucous displays from the Welsh borders. 4. Beverley Garland Dancers are a Beverley based Ladies Team who perform Flower Garland and stick dances from Lancashire and Cheshire along with clog dances from Lancashire and Cumberland. 5. Yorkshire Coast Morris A mixed team of Morris with danceouts around Scarborough and District, including such places as Whitby, Filey and Malton. Musical accompaniment is often from melodeon (an accordion type thing with buttons) but members play fiddles, banjo, whistle, and recorder 6. Makara Morris Bridlington’s own Border Morris Recognised by their distinctive kit of Green ‘Tatters’ which represent the legend of the Green Man –The name ‘Makara’ being part of the far history of the Green Man’ With sticks, hankies & bells Makara capture the spirit of the Lord Of The Dance. Morris dancing has a long recorded history in England. By the early 1500’s Morris Dancing was a key part of Church festivals. Indeed in the Medieval period the churches brewed and sold ales which were used for many occasions for Christenings, brides ales and Whitsuntide ales. By the 1700’s The Morris became attached to village fetes, and the May Day celebrations. http://festival.yorkshire.com/events/bridlington-old-town-summer-festival CONTACT David Hinde Tel 01262 851445 Visit www.yorkshirefestival.co.uk, Yorkshire Festival on Facebook or follow Yorkshire Festival 2014 on Twitter - YFest2014 ENDS Yorkshire Festival 2014 is the first ever 100-day festival to precede the Grand Départ in its 111 year history. • U DDBA Papers of the Barnards Family 1401-1945 of South Cave
Hull History Centre: Papers of the Barnards Family of South Cave U DDBA Papers of the Barnards Family 1401-1945 of South Cave Historical background: The papers relate to the branch of the family headed by Leuyns Boldero Barnard who began building up a landed estate centred on South Cave in the mid-eighteenth century. His inherited ancestry can be traced back to William and Elizabeth Barnard in the late sixteenth century. Their son, William Barnard, became mayor of Hull and died in 1614. Of his seven sons, two of them also served time as mayor of Hull, including the sixth son, Henry Barnard (d.1661), through whose direct descendants Leuyns Boldero Barnard was eventually destined to succeed. Henry Barnard, married Frances Spurrier and together had a son and a daughter. His daughter, Frances, married William Thompson MP of Humbleton and his son, Edward Barnard, who lived at North Dalton, was recorder of Hull and Beverley from the early 1660s until 1686 when he died. He and his wife Margaret, who was also from the Thompson family, had at least seven children, the eldest of whom, Edward Barnard (d.1714), had five children some of whom died without issue and some had only female heirs. The second son, William Barnard (d.1718) married Mary Perrot, the daughter of a York alderman, but had no children. The third son, Henry Barnard (will at U DDBA/14/3), married Eleanor Lowther, but he also died, in 1769 at the age of 94, without issue. From the death of Henry Barnard in 1769 the family inheritance moved laterally.

  • Ripon Fragments
1 Introduction Medieval manuscripts survive in varying degrees of completeness. This is a study of the most vestigial survivors of medieval manuscript culture, the leaves from books which were dismembered during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and re-used to strengthen the bindings of early modern books. The focus of the study will be the fragments of medieval manuscripts preserved in a specific collection of books that belong to Ripon Cathedral Library. The aim of the study is to investigate the history of the fragments, using an appropriate methodology to hypothesise (if not establish) which manuscripts they were disbound from, and in which printed books they were recycled in the cases where they are no longer preserved in situ. The books of Ripon Cathedral Library have been held on long-term deposit in the Brotherton Library at Leeds University since 1980. The library of Ripon Cathedral was founded at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The nucleus of its collection was the bequest of Anthony Higgin, Dean of Ripon Cathedral.1 The physical components of this remarkable collection of early printed books reveal a hidden library of fragments that were once leaves of medieval manuscripts before being used as pastedowns and binding strips to strengthen the bindings. Since a nameless visitor to Ripon Cathedral started sorting and identifying the fragments in the 1920s, much work has been carried out, but much remains to be done. This dissertation will contribute to our understanding of the fragments by focusing on their relationship with the bindings in which they have been preserved. Determining the provenance of a binding and of an isolated scrap of text is far from straightforward, and the problems and challenges of identifying and interpreting fragments will be explored in a series of case studies.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA 1.1 Physical process level 1.1.1 Classification One of the youngest natural coastlines of England is the Holderness Coast, a 61 km long stretch of low glacial drift cliffs 3m to 35m in height. The Holderness coast stretches from Flamborough Head in the north to Spurn Head in the south. The Holderness coast mainly exists of soft glacial drift cliffs, which have been cut back up to 200 m in the last century. On the softer sediment, the crumbling cliffs are fronted by beach-mantled abrasion ramps that decline gradually to a smoothed sea floor. The Holderness coast is a macro-tidal coast, according to the scoping study the classification of the coast is: 2. Soft rock coasts High and low glacial sea cliffs 1.1.2 Geology About a million years ago the Yorkshire coastline was a line of chalk cliffs almost 32 km west of where it now is. During the Pleistocene Ice Age (18,000 years ago) deposits of glacial till (soft boulder clay) were built up against these cliffs to form the new coastline. The boulder clay consists of about 72% mud, 27% sand and 1% boulders and large Fig.
