Hines,Jessica Taylor, Amelia Lehmann,Carol Flavell,Zoe Theodore& ChrisCamp. Congratulationsto allClub Members for anothergreat season on MudjimbaBeach. Theweather was kind to usfor mostof the seasonwith onlya handfulof dayswhen the beachwas closed. Patrols performed well and at a highstandard. The extendgd patrolhours were not receivedvery well by Members, but I thankyou allfor putting inthe additionaltime.

The seasonstarted shakily with the resignationof a long term and dedicated Member,Dave Johnston. lt would be remissof me not to mentionwhat a huge contributionDave gave to the Club. Davewas an inauguralActive Member of the Club. He did histrainingwith Marcoola SLSC and performed patrols at Marcoolain preparationfor the formationof MudjimbaSLSC. Dave was our first IRBCaptain and performedthis role for the first two seasons. Davethen servedas an Active Representativeon the ManagementCommittee and SocialCo-ordinator. For the nexttwo seasonsDave held the positionof ChiefTraining Officer and, as many peoplewill attest, did an excellentjob. I am surewe all at MudjimbaSLSC thank Davefor hisefforts over the sevenyears he was a Memberof the Club.Fortunately the Club had tr,voMembers to take on the positionsof Club Captainand Chief TrainingOfficer vacated by Dave. GuyTanner and Jenny Kennedy put their hands up for ClubCaptain and Chief Training Officer, respectively, and havedone a great job for the Club. The resignationof the Secretary,Narelle Burke, in Januarywas againunsettling and I thankJane Langford for takingon this role and keepingthe Clubon track.

The Club has had great support this season, with a number of organisations assistingwith fundraisingopportunities and donations. Our thanksto Mudjimba CaravanParkSocial Club for donatingmannikins for training, new rescuetubes and surf rescueboogy boards for patrols. SurfdogSurt Shop donated a surfboardfor the Clubto rafflewhich was very successful. lt enabledthe Club to purchasenew hand held radios;our existingequipment being stolen at the beginningof the season. Quota Internationalof Coolum Beachdonated a new base radio and we thank Quotafor their on-going support. TheSumm er of SurfCompetition was heldagain thisseason and we werefortunate enough to win a Haydenrescue board. Thanks to all Memberswho collectedtokens and to the SunshineCoast Dailv and Havden Surfcraft.

TheClub continuesto grow andgear and equipment is mostlyof a highstandard. Hopefully, the CIubwill be in a financialposition to purchasenew IRBmotors for nextseason. Congratulationsto the JuniorActivities Committee and all coaches, water safety personneland parentsfor anothersuccessful season. The popularity of Nippers at Mudjimbacontinues to grow and it takesa lot of dedicationto makeNippers successful. l would like to thank the Management Committee for their effortsthis season. The time that is volunteeredby the Committeeis muchvalued.

Top - Club Memberof the Year 2002. From left - Steven Smith, Marty Kennedy, Jane Langford, Dave Johnston, A dualpresentation in the 2002season for the tirelesseffort put in by both Dave and Marty. Dave put througha record number of Awards for the Club, undertakingmuch of the training himself,as well as activelyparticipating in fundraising, social events and being a mentorfor the Cadetsand Juniors- he reallyenjoyed chaperoning them all to Dreamworldon the train! Hisefforts also earnedhim Instructorof the Year from the SunshineCoast Branch(Big Brotheris watching!). Marty steeredthe Junior Activitiesin the rightdirection all season,as wellas upholding his patrol duties and participatingin many other Club activities. His commitment and patiencereflected on the wholeJunior Activities Committee making our inauguralyear relatively painless.

Right& Centre- Many thanksfor the generosityof Dave Llewellynand the Mudjimba Caravan Park Social Clubin donatingmannikins, rescue tubes and boogyboards to theClub. It iswith deepregret that I farewellKen O'Connell from the SunshineCoast Branch. Kenhas assisted this Club with hisadvice and experience since its inceptionand his insightinto surflifesaving and associated matters has been invaluable. Ken will be sorelymissed by manypeople within surflifesaving and I wish him thevery best for thefuture.

MudjimbaSLSC has had an unsettlingyear in Administration.I foundcoming into a positionsuch as Secretarypart way througha seasona littledifficult. A personal emergencywhich then kept me interstatefor two months was frustrating, but never-the-lessextremely necessary. My grateful thanks to my Presidentand husbandfor his emotionalsupport and practicalassistance. My thanksalso to thosefriends and members who senttheir good wishes and to thosewho tooktime out to phoneme in Sydney. Specialthanks also to my brother-in-law,Jim, who offeredto paymy airfarehome for a few daysrespite and also enabled me to attend theManagement Meeting in April.

TheClub's long term goal of establishinga Supporter's Club and therefore a reliable incomestream is gradually coming to fruitionand the nexttwo to threeseasons will requiresome hard work and hard decisionsby Members, but most of all co- operationand reliabilityfrom the Management Committee.

During the preparationof this report,Annual Reportsfrom other Clubs in the SunshineCoast Branch have gradually been passing across my desk. I find it an interestingexercise to'compare notes'with Officers in otherClubs. Today I found thatSurf Lifesaving was losinganother stalwart. Lorraine Buhk, who hasbeen with AlexandraHeadland SLSC since the yeardot, is retiringas Administrator. I found someof herwords particularly relevant:

'Thereis the perceptionthat one person has the ideaand then someone else may do thejob, not so. Likethe houseof cards,if the baseis not setand the infrastructure not solid, the 'idea'willnot survive, again time for teamplayers but whereare they? Likeeveryone else, our honoraryofficers are always extremely busy persons in their personal/businesslives yet areoften asked to achievethe impossiblewithout any team effort. Only people standingto the side offering ideas but no solid constructiveassi stance.'

In order for our Club to achieveits goals,Members (including the Management Committee)must work togetheras a team. Conflictwill only serveto fragmentthe Club, create cancerous factions and hinder advancement.

The upgradingof our Constitutionis a goalwhich has becomelong term which shouldnot have. When our Club was first establishedwe adoptedthe 'model'as providedby Surf LifeSaving . The motion standing before the AGM this year to adoptthe model'in its entirety',is thereforenot new,and in factwas the basisof the Club's establishment.Whilst SLSQhas forged aheadand updatedthe 'model' on an almostAnnual basis, this hasnever occurred within our Cluband there are now many mandatoryclauses which are not in evidencein our currentConstitution. Someofthesechanges, both majorand minor, havebeen broughtaboutbySurf Life SavingQueensland but manyhave been brought about by statutorybodies in the QueenslandGovernment such as the Departmentof Justiceand the Departmentof FairTrading. The implementation of the CSTalso brought the FederalGovernment intothe picturein theform of theAustralian Taxation Office. lt is now essentialthat our Club updateits Constitutionto conformwith thesechanges. We havesat on ourhands for too long.

I lookforward to workingonce again for the Clubas Secretary and with a teamwho acknowledgesrespect for each other's abilities and responsibilities.

Unfortunately, someone else had the samehigh opinionof our equipmentand on the weekendof the first patrolsof the seasonthe towerwas broken into andall the moveableitems stolen. We thendiscovered just how pitifulthe current insurance cover provisions are as the excess for chattelssuch as theseis a staggering$5,000 per claim. Understandableperhaps for a public liabilityclaim involving compensation, but ludicrousfor relativelyminor items such asthe $6,500involved in thiscase. Bewarned - thoseCIub members who mayuse their own personalitems such as laptopsand digitalcameras for Clubfunctions - youare covered bythe Club insurance butthefirst $5,000 is out of yourpocket.

RyanGaylard of AquaticCommunications & Electronicsvery kindly loanedus sufficienthand held setswith bagsand harnessesto immediatelyget us up and goingagain. The old MidlandBase Set was once again dusted off andre-installed in thetower. Byseason's end we onceagain had a reasonablecollection of equipment includinga new baseset made possible by a donationfrom the QuotaInternational Club - CoolumBranch and the additionalassistance of a discountfrom locallcom agents,ClobalAviation of MaroochyAirport. The channel programming was done againgratis by RyanCaylard who deservesspecial mention for his unstinting supportof SurfLife Saving Clubs on the Sunshine Coast.

TheTower steps sprouted a handrail and a chainhoist to makelifting easy - slowbut easy. SomeRadio Operators found it unwiseto embracethis new technologytoo closelyas the endlesschain became rusty in a few daysof saltair with unfortunate resultsfor white shirts. A majorchange has been the provisionof a Lifeguardfrom MaroochyShire Council manning the Towerfull time on week-days.We share someequipment with the Lifeguardsand havean excellentworking relationship with them:Among other things, our Tower windows have never been cleaner.

Thankyou to allthe RadioOperators for their help during the season and the Patrol Members for their co-operation. Once againwe hadthe supportof LeonSharpe and PaulCrabbe of SunshineCommand with our trainingcourses and we arevery grateful for thetime and expertise they provide .

I am constantlyinspired by the way in which MudjimbaSLSC Cadets and Juniors performon andoff the beach. Onceagain this seasonthe Cadetsand Juniors have proventhat they can achievein manyways. We were able to retainmost of our Cadetsexcept for a few of the boys, who seemto get into board ridingat this age. Thefemales are another story - they havegone from strengthto strength.Quite a few Nippershave come through the ranksto attainCadet status. lt is reallypleasing to see. As in pastseasons quite a few Awardshave been gained by the Cadetsand Juniors. Many hours have been spent on the beachdoing patrols and water safety this season. A big THANKYOU must go to MitchellCarson, Jessica Taylor and LeanneHines for the hours they have put into water safetyover the past two seasons.Great job guysand the Nippersgreatly appreciate your time.

Anotherdifficult year in choosingthe recipientfor Cadetof the YearAward. Once againit wasa finalchoice between two verygood Cadets who workedtirelessly this season.Congratulations to thedeserving winner!

As I have statedin past years,Mudjimba SLSCneeds to think seriouslyabout sendingmore of our Cadetsand Juniors to Stateand Branch run camps.Much isto be gainedby the participantsat theseinformative and fun camps. Leadershipand teamskills are but a few lessonslearnt that the participantcarries through life, even outsideofsurflifesaving.Alsomanygreatfriendshipsareformedatthesecamps.

Congratulationsto all the Cadetsand juniors who competedin surf sportsthis season.lt was so pleasingto hearMudjimba's name mentioned so manytimes by the commentatorat the SunshineCoast Branch Championships. Also to Emma Offner- congratulationsfor your effortat the Stateand Nationaltitles. lt is really pleasingto seethe Nipperscome through to Cadetlevel and stillcompete at surf carnivals. Onceagain Mudjimba SLSC would liketo saya big THANKYOU to the Cadetsand Juniorsfor theirconstant support on and off the beach. Your conducthas been exemplaryyet again th is season.

Cadet of the YearAward - MicheleHopwood presentsJessica Taylor with her Award. Well didn't we havea fairlyeasy season with regardto FirstAid cases!Luck for now but hopefullythat will continuefor nextseason.

A greatseason as far a new FirstAid Certificateholders. We have9 new FirstAid Certificateholders which is fantastic.

As SurfLife Saving Queensland is now a RegisteredTraining Organisation, we are now ableto delivercertified courses and provideregistered certificates. This has alsobeen a greatway to helpraise much neededfunds for MudjimbaSLSC and we will be continuingthese courses both off seasonand into nextseason.

Hopefullyby the startof the nextseason we will alsobe ableto deliverARC and Defibrillator. Will keepyou all informed.

I hope everyonehas a greatbreak and again look forwardto seeingyou all nextseason.

Early in the seasona Competitor'sMeeting was called where any Members interestedin competingcould get informationregarding Carnivals throughout the season. Due to lack of interestthe meetingwas abandoned. Throughoutthe seasonMembers possibly interested in competingwere informed of Carnivals, but again with little interest and few inquiries,Mudjimba SLSCdidn't have a representativeat a Carnivalthis season.

I would liketo encourageall Membersto considercompeting next season as it is a great incentiveto keepfitness at a high leveland good exposurefor our Club. Carnivalscan be long and tedious, with hourspassing before an eventis called, howeverit gives lifesaversthe opportunityto mingle and interactwith fellow competitorsand can be a mostenjoyable day.

Fora Clubto competeat Carnivals, there is a requirementto provideOfficials on a 1:10 ratio (ie. 1 Officialfor each10 competitors). This is an issuethat the Club has to addressand I would ask potentialcompetitors for next seasonto encourage friendsor familyto becomean Official. I would liketo thankthe Officialsfrom our Clubwho attended Carnivals this season.

Anotherrequirement is that Clubs competing at Carnivalsprovide an IRBDriver and Crewperson.A rosteris sentto everyClub at the startof the season.lt will be put on the Noticeboardalong with the CarnivalCalendar. Would IRBDrivers please takenote of thedates and offer assistance if possible.

I find it hardto explainmy feelingsas Nipper Coach and Team Manager for this past season.l've beeninspired through the kid'sbeach and surf skills, we well astheir 'have-a-go'attitude when we have been involvedin competitionor againsteach other.

I am gratefulto all the peoplethat havehelped me and the Club throughoutthis season. To the friendsl've made and fellow coachesin Ken Keirnanand Rob Charlton,I would liketo saythank you for your support. Roband Ken's efforts with boardcoaching, positive attitudes and abilityto relatetowards our kids can only breed improvement. Rob teachesthe Surf AwarenessProgram at school - so importantto what we are trying to achieve. We are extremelylucky he will be implementingour Nipper Programin the coming seasonand I wish him every success.

ToPete Mclaren, my gratitudefor hissupport of ourJuniorClub through fundraising and especiallyat CommitteeMeetings. To all our Age Managersand WaterSafety personnel, thank you for your help week-in,week-out, no matter what the conditions.I makethe call we alwaysneed more support. Parentsplease do not be afraidto lendyour support. I guaranteeyour kids will appreciateit.

The unhappiestpart of the season, without a doubt, were the, at times, woeful beachconditions. I will endeavourto rectifythis problemin the comingseason, by speakingwith FatherJoe- he may have aword with a higherauthority on our behalf.

My other priorityand, hopefullythe Club'sconcern, is havingsuch a very small Cadetto Juniorfollowing. To guaranteesurvival on the beach, our Club must becomea communityhub for youngpeople. We, as membersand parents, must encouragekids to meeteach other, learn lifesaving and use our facilities.

I usedthe word inspiredto startthis brief and that is exactlythe way I felt asTeam Managerwhen MudjimbaSLSC has competed this year. With limitedpreparation everychild donnedthe jade, white and navy cap and gaveit their all. I have witnessedmany outstanding efforts and achievements in our shortNipper life, too manyto mention, except to sayI am leavingspace for nextseason's ''l st Gold result' andto the Geraghtybrothers who uncompromisinglypush each other. Yourlove, respectandrivalrytowards each other is what lifesaving is all about.
