Replacement Name for a Natural Hybrid of Encyclia Hook. From Colombia.

Ruben P. Sauleda 6442 SW 107 Ct., Miami, Fl 33173.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a replacement name for the natural hybrid Encyclia xortizii Sauleda. The specific epithet xortizii was previously used in the Encyclia by Dressler for a species now in the genus .

In the collection of Jose Fernando Londoño from Manizales, a from Valle del Cauca where Encyclia ceratistes (Lindl.) Schltr. and Encyclia diurna (Jacq.) Schltr. are known to be sympatric was found that resembled E. diurna but with a labellum showing characteristics of E. ceratistes. In addition, Pedro Ortiz Valdvieso in his archive of photographs and illustrations of orchidaceae of Colombia, now in the collection of Carlos Uribe Vellez, has a photograph, which represents the hybrid of these two species but without specific locality.

The natural hybrid is named in honor of Pedro Ortiz Valdvieso in whose archive of photographs and illustrations of orchidaceae of Colombia, accumulated in over 45 years, a photograph of this hybrid was first found and to acknowledge his contributions to the orchid flora of Colombia. This hybrid was known to occur but could not be named until a live plant was found and a specimen was made.

This paper replaces the specific epithet xortizii Sauleda because Dressler had previously published the epithet in the genus Encyclia Hook., Encyclia ortizii Dressler (Novon 5: 140. 1995). The specific epithet of Dressler honors Rodolfo Ortiz, director of the San Ramón nature reserve in Costa Rica. At the time Dressler was transferring to the genus Encyclia most of the species with pseudobulbs that were originally in the genus L. Higgins transferred the epiphet to a catchall genus, Prosthechea Knowles & Westc., Prosthechea ortizii (Dressler) W. E. Higgins (Phytologia 82: 379.1997 publ. 1998). In addition, Higgins transferred all the species that were not by definition encyclias into Prosthechea. Higgins based his work on cDNA (which has no bearing on the morphology of the plant) ignoring the distinct morphology of the species he transferred. The replacement name is here presented.
