On August 26, Myranda attended K-State’s Part Time Opportuni- ties Fair and spoke with hundreds of students seeking jobs. Three of the students left their resumes and Myranda is working to help them find part time jobs.

To help find jobs for Alorica’s displaced workers, Myranda attended their September 1 Job Fair. The three-hour event resulted in the Chamber gathering 15 resumes and talking with dozens of job seekers. Myranda will work to help the employees find other employment.

Washburn University held their Fall Career Fair, September 8. Myranda represented the Chamber member’s open positions at the event. Three resumes were brought back from individuals interested in jobs in Manhattan.

The Flint Hills Job Corps Fall Job Fair was September 9. Many students expressed a desire to stay in Manhattan after they complete their programs. Myranda visited with dozens of students at the event and returned with 3 resumes. October 2010 Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce Little Apple® Business Review Page 11

by Bevin Landrum Military Update Military-Community Liaison Twelve members of the Central Flint Hills Region recently travelled to Fort Polk, LA to observe 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Divi- sion during their Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) rotation. This is a final mission exercise to test the readiness of the unit prior to their upcom- ing deployment to Iraq. Community members from Manhattan, K-State, Chapman, and Dickinson County toured the training area known as "the box" and visited with Soldiers and Commanders as they began their force-on-force part of the rotation.

The trip also included a social with BG Yarbrough, Commanding General Fort Polk. BG Yarbrough formerly served as a Deputy Commanding General of the Big Red One before assuming his current position. He and wife, Kathy, hosted the Fort Riley delegation along with key local Fort Polk leaders and elected officials.

Tours and briefings about the JRTC program rounded out the visit. JRTC is one of three premier training centers for the Army and thousands of Soldiers rotate through each year. The scenario they encounter during their training is as realistic as possible, short of being boots on the ground in the Middle East.

Many of the 2nd BDE units have active partnerships with Kansas communities in the Central Flint Hills Region. The Adopt-a-Community program at Fort Riley is one of the only ones to take local leaders to visit our units during training. The opportunity to see our troops in action solidifies the partnerships and cre- ates a bond which will further the deployment support back home.

The Flint Hills Veterans Coalition con- tinued their recognition of long standing members of the organization on Septem- ber 8 by awarding Medallions of Excellence to Tom Fryer and Lori Bishop.

COL (R) Tom Fryer has been the FHVC Treasurer since its inception and served 21 years in the US Air Force. He also Commanded the K-State Air Force ROTC Detachment prior to his retirement and worked at Commerce Bank as a Certified Financial Planner before also retiring there. He is an active community volun- teer and devoted supporter of all things military.

Lori Bishop is the Director for RSVP of the Flint Hills which involves volunteers 55 years and over in area activities. Their partnership with the FHVC includes Lori’s work to bring veteran volunteers together to mentor local school children. Her work to oversee the annual Veterans Day essay and poster contest for students ensures we bring all generations together in sup- port of honoring our veterans.
