Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, Vol. 25, No. 2, August 2005 Estranged from the Ideal Past: Historical Evolution of Madrassahs in Singapore SYED MUHD KHAIRUDIN ALJUNIED and DAYANG ISTIAISYAH HUSSIN Abstract This article examines the historical evolution of the madrassah in Singapore as against its ideal Islamic past. We argue that a few broad processes have brought the estrangement of the present day madrassah from its ideal concept and practice in the medieval times. First was the nature of Islam that was propagated in the Malay Archipelago. This has to a large extent left certain tendencies in thought, which had stunted reformist movements at a later period. Next was the growing threat of Christian missionary movements which were reinforced by the role of British colonialists in marginalizing and delimiting the development and growth of the madrassah into an integrated educational institution. Last but not least are the secular-based expectations and policies that were implemented by the post- colonial state of Singapore which further relegated the madrassah institution within the mainstream national objectives. Introduction ‘Madrassah’ is legally defined in Singapore today as ‘religious school’.1 While a simple rendering in contemporary administrative language does point to madrassah to mean a ‘school’ yet, as such, it is not necessarily accurate. The publications in this series should reflect studies of both religion in society and society in religion. The convent, established in 1854 in central Singapore, is now the ‗premier lifestyle destination‘, CHIJMES. I show that the Sisters were early providers of social services and girls‘ education, with an orphanage, women‘s refuge and schools for girls. They survived the turbulent years of the Japanese Occupation of Singapore and adapted to the priorities of the new government after independence, expanding to become the largest cloistered convent in Southeast Asia. -

Education, Culture and the Making of the Singapore Developmental State, 1955 – 2004 Yeow Tong Chia Doctor of Philosophy Department of Theory and Policy Studies in Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto 2011 Abstract This dissertation examines the role of education in the formation of the Singapore developmental state, through a historical study of education for citizenship in Singapore (1955-2004), in which I explore the interconnections between changes in history, civics and social studies curricula, and the politics of nation-building. Building on existing scholarship on education and state formation, the dissertation goes beyond the conventional notion of seeing education as providing the skilled workforce for the economy, to mapping out cultural and ideological dimensions of the role of education in the developmental state. The story of state formation through citizenship education in Singapore is essentially the history of how Singapore’s developmental state managed crises (imagined, real or engineered), and how changes in history, civics and social studies curricula, served to legitimize the state, through educating and moulding the desired “good citizen” in the interest of nation building. Underpinning these changes has been the state’s use of cultural constructs such as ii Confucianism and Asian values to shore up its legitimacy. -

German Law Journal (2019), 20, pp. 1007–1034 doi:10.1017/glj.2019.75 ARTICLE Irreducible Plurality, Indivisible Unity: Singapore Relational Constitutionalism and Cultivating Harmony Through Constructing a Constitutional Civil Religion Li-ann Thio* (Received 18 August 2019; accepted 29 August 2019) Abstract This Article seeks to explore the nature, function, source, and content of a constitutional civil religion (CCR) within Singapore’s constitutional experiment in managing the diversity of race and religion and promoting solidarity. CCR is constructed as a strategy to secure social harmony within the world’smostreligiously diverse polity, through recognizing an irreducible plurality in ethnic and religious terms, while maintaining an indivisible unity through nurturing bonds of citizen solidarity. This dovetails with the function of the constitution as an instrument of social integration, involving the articulation and regular affirmation of shared community values and aspirations, as well as process and practices—or public rituals—which regulate dispute resolution or conflict management during instances or crises where racial and religious harmony is threatened. A functional approach is taken towards the idea of a civil religion, and the tasks of integration, legitimation, and inspiration it may play within a constitutional order. The nature of civil religion in general, and the sources of CCR in Singapore, as well as its expression as a public ritual in managing religious dis- harmony disputes is discussed.
