Scouting’s Impact Through the dedication and support of our volunteers, we achieved the following in 2016:

We collaborated with over 210 community-based organizations to charter 320 Scouting units in 37 communities and serve 10,329 youth with high quality programs. 3,593 Adult volunteers collectively spent over 269,500 hours leading, mentoring, training and guiding our Scouts.

We qualified as a Silver Council and a Silver Order of the Arrow Lodge in the National Journey to Excellence Program.

3,367 Cub Scouts advanced in rank. 432 Webelos earned the Arrow of Light, the highest rank achievement in Cub Scouting, preparing them for Boy Scouts.

1,919 Boy Scouts advanced in rank on their trail to Eagle, earning 9,181 career and hobby-based Merit Badges along the way. We partnered with Sikorsky Aircraft and the Connecticut Building Trades to offer 823 Scouts the opportunity to earn STEM-related merit badges taught by skilled instructors.

265 boys earned the rank of Eagle , giving direct leadership to 38,555 hours of community service projects in achievement of this goal. We also reconnected with over 200 adult Eagle Scouts through Eagle Scout After-Hours.

Our Scouts and volunteers performed 49,596 hours of community service collecting food, cleaning parks and sidewalks, shoveling snow, repairing trails and more.

Over 2,237 Cub Scouts and their parents spent quality time together having fun at our annual Fishing Derby, Scout Day at Lime Rock and Fright Night at Deer Lake.

89 Boy Scouts and Venturers took Scouting’s premier Youth Leadership Training, and 56 adult volunteers completed Wood Badge, Scouting’s top adult leader training.

Over 1,730 youth from 94 troops enjoyed a weeklong experience at Camp Sequassen. Many returned for a second week. 327 boys from 49 packs came home smiling, tired, dirty and sweaty each day from our Cub Scout Day camps. 3 19 Cubs and parents spent three or more nights together at Cub Scout/Webelos Action Camp (resident) camp.

Page 9 Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader

Leaders are trained so that young people receive a worthwhile experience full of fun and adventure -- and trained leaders have more fun! You have the privilege of making a positive difference in the lives of the youth members you serve. To serve effectively, you must be trained. The youth members of the BSA deserve a trained leader and there is no substitute for proper training. The programs of the BSA are exciting, challenging and often technical. The information needed to properly deliver these programs to our youth members is not intuitive. Instead, it requires proper training. Per Connecticut Yankee Council Policy: All direct youth contact leaders (Cubmasters, Den Leaders, Scoutmasters, Crew Advisors, Skippers, Coaches, and all assistant leaders) Must be 100% trained in their position prior to 12/31/16; otherwise, the unit may not recharter in 2017. Any untrained leader will be dropped from the unit charter. Youth Protection Training Youth Protection Training (YPT) provides information to help prevent various forms of child abuse, protocols for reporting suspected child abuse and resources to assist adults in creating a safe environment for our youth members. Annual YPT is mandatory for all registered BSA adult leaders. Protection Training is available through www.myscouting.scouting.org.

Page 11 What is Exploring?

Exploring is ’s career education program for young men and women in sixth grade through 20 years old. Adults are selected by the participating organization for involvement in the program.

Exploring’s purpose is to provide experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Explorers are ready to investigate the meaning of interdependence in their personal relationships and communities. Exploring is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth and organizations in their communities. Local community organizations initiate an Exploring program by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow and develop. Exploring programs can specialize in a variety of career skills.

Page 13 Adventures for Cub Scouts & Webelos The founder of Scouting, Lord Robert S.S. Baden-Powell, once described Scouting this way: “SCOUTING IS A GAME for boys, under the leadership of boys, in which elder brothers can give their younger brothers healthy environment and encourage them to healthy activities such as will help them to develop CITIZENSHIP.”

To the boys in our program, Scouting is a game -- to our parents and leaders, it’s a game with a purpose: Character building and Citizenship training” Your camps offer your boys and family the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, some fun and games, and at the same time helping to develop character and learning citizenship.

You and your families have year-round access to all of our camp facilities: Camp Sequassen in New Hartford, Deer Lake Scout Reservation in Killingworth, Camp Pomperaug in Union, Hoyt Scout Camp & Training Center in Redding and Wah Wah Taysee in Hamden

ROUTE I-95 TO NEW HAVEN EXIT 61 EXIT 62 About Owaneco Lodge, Order of the Arrow?

Purpose As Scouting’s National , the Order of Arrow’s purpose is to: • Recognize those who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and through that recognition cause others to conduct themselves in a way that warrants similar recognition. • Promote camping, responsible outdoor adventure, and environmental stewardship as essential components of every Scout’s experience, in the unit, year-round, and in summer camp. • Develop leaders with the willingness, character, spirit and ability to advance the activities of their units, our Brotherhood, Scouting, and ultimately our nation. • Crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others. Eligibility The Order of the Arrow membership requirements are: • Be a registered member of the . • After registration with a troop or team, have experienced 15 days and nights of Boy Scout camping during the two-year period prior to the election. The 15 days and nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. The balance of the camping must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps. • Youth must be under the age of 21, hold the BSA First Class rank or higher, and following approval by the Scoutmaster or Varsity team Coach, be elected by the youth members of their troop or team. • Adults (age 21 or older) who are registered in the BSA and meet the camping requirements may be selected following nomination to the lodge adult selection committee. Adult selection is based on their ability to perform the necessary functions to help the Order fulfill its purpose, and is not for recognition of service, including current or prior positions. Selected adults must be an asset to the Order because of demonstrated abilities, and must provide a positive example for the growth and development of the youth members of the lodge. Induction The induction ceremony, called the Ordeal, is the first step toward full membership in the Order. During the experience, candidates maintain silence, receive small amounts of food, work on camp improvement projects, and sleep apart from other campers. The entire experience is designed to teach significant values. All candidates for membership must complete the Ordeal. Brotherhood Membership After 10 months of service as an Ordeal member and fulfilling certain requirements, a member may take part in the Brotherhood ceremony, which places further emphasis on the ideals of Scouting and the Order. Completion of this ceremony signifies full membership in the Order. Vigil Honor After two years of exceptional service as a Brotherhood member, and with the approval of the national Order of the Arrow committee, a Scout or Scouter may be recognized with the Vigil Honor for their distinguished contributions to their lodge, the Order of the Arrow, Scouting, or their Scout camp. This honor is bestowed by special selection and is limited to one person for every 50 members registered with the lodge each year.

Page 57 When you start your online shopping using our link, you can feel awesome knowing that 6 percent or more of your purchase supports local Scouting in our Council.

Your purchases through our link have contributed over $10,000 to local Scouting in the last 12 months.

Whether you’re shopping for personal, family or business every purchase you make at www.ctyankee.org/amazon can change a life through Scouting in the Connecticut Yankee Council. Does this affect my Amazon Prime account privilieges? Nope. Just remember to start with our link and then log in as usual. You’ll be good to go. Does my computer remember this link? NO. You need to use it every time you go online to shop. We are effectively earning a credit for referring you. Simply adjust your bookmark to our link and you’re all set. How can I tell it’s working? Odds are you won’t notice any change. The only difference is that your browser is set to: “http://www.amazon.com/?_encoding=UTF8&tag=ctyankee-20” (don’t try to remember that though, just use our link above) Is this really worth my time? We estimate that about 50 volunteers made their purchases using this link in November and helped us earn over $750 in that month alone. There’s 8,500 families in our Council. If I buy enough stuff, can I earn a patch? Unfortunately no. We have no way of knowing who is using our link. We just see the total purchases and a statement at the end of the month with a nice deposit in our account.
