Preface The Women’s Law Project (WLP) is a public interest law center, committed to fighting discrimination and injustice against women and to advancing the legal, health, economic, and societal status of women and their families. The WLP has a long and dedicated history of advocacy and is recognized as a national leader in the field of women’s rights, as well as a unique resource for women in Philadelphia and other parts of Pennsylvania. It has been our goal since the WLP’s founding in 1974 to provide women with knowledge to empower them to address the problems in their own lives, to work to eliminate gender discrimination in laws and institutions, and to promote changes in the legal system that directly affect the status and opportunities of women. The WLP engages in high-impact litigation and leads advocacy, education, and public policy efforts on behalf of women and their families. Our vehicle for direct service to the community is a Telephone Counseling Service that has assisted more than 100,000 women in the Philadelphia area over the last twenty-five years by providing information about laws and legal procedures and referrals to social service and legal agencies. An alarmingly high number of calls to this service are from family law litigants without legal representation who seek information and assistance to negotiate the Domestic Relations Division of Philadelphia Family Court (Domestic Relations Division). The experiences of our callers in the Domestic Relations Division also provide direction for the WLP’s targeted advocacy and litigation initiatives and have helped to generate this report. High school and college students sketch sculptures, con- duct research and bike along this mile-long boulevard to Fairmount Park. Domestic and international travelers appreciate fine art, fine dining and luxury hotels with extraordinary views. With the relocation of the Barnes Foundation near the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) and adjacent to the Rodin Museum, the Parkway will host one of the most extraordinary ensembles of 19th- and 20th-century French art. The dramatic expansion of the nearby Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts has more than doubled this area’s offering of fine American art. PMA will open its new Perelman Building in 2007, the Free Library plans to break ground on its major new addition to the Central Library in 2006, and still other museums are possible. MID-1980s The Mural Arts Program begins in 1984 as a component of the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network. Today, Philadelphia is the mural capital of the world, with more than 3,600 murals. Live Aid takes place in just two cities in 1985—Philadelphia and London. It’s one of the largest television broadcasts of all time, with an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion across 150 nations. In 1985, The Foundation for Architecture begins its guided architectural tour program. The Book and the Cook event kicks off its annual celebration of the city’s gastronomic diversity in 1985. The Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing opens Memorial Day weekend in 1986 with the first annual Jambalaya Jam. In 1987, the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau forms the Multicultural Affairs Congress to promote African-American conventions and tourism. Founded in 1987, the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority begins to develop a convention center in Philadelphia. That same year, Marriott commits to building a 1,200-room hotel adjacent to the Pennsylvania Convention Center. In 1987, the 61-story Liberty Place office and retail complex opens in Center City, breaking the 100-year-old agreement limiting buildings in Center City to the height of the William Penn statue atop City Hall. We the People, a celebration of the 200th birthday of the U.S. Constitution, culminates on September 17, 1987 (Constitution Day) with the permanent lighting of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
