These themes are: (a) dolphin as peer to humans, of equal intelligence or at least capable of communicating with or helping humans; (b) the dolphin as the representation of a romantic notion of ideal freedom in nature, embodying principles of peace, harmony or love; (c) the dolphin as a naïve, innocent being that is subordinate and in need of human protection; and (d) the dolphin as superior to humans, potentially affiliating with a higher power or intelligence.This review revealed that the use of dolphins in humor reinforced or lam- pooned the four identified themes, indicating a common accep- tance of these themes.The paper concludes with a discussion of the importance of considering popular narratives in the presen- tation of scientific research results. Many modern aquariums are striving to discover more effective methods to inform and educate their visitors about the lives of the marine mammals in their facilities. Dolphins, in particular, are a species with a high degree of public familiarity and desir- ability as a display animal. Aquariums have used Society & Animals 14:4 (2006) © Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2006 S & A 14,4_f2_321-349 10/24/06 8:43 PM Page 322 these popular animals in public performances to expand the appeal of their public programs and to promote their conservation missions. Though dolphin shows are popular with the public, actual research into public conceptions of dolphins’ lives and the impact of these aquarium performances on that public discourse have not been the subject of empirical study. Furthermore, the pervasiveness of fictional portrayals of dolphins in popu- lar culture could make it difficult for the general public to distinguish fact from fiction and may pose a barrier for science learning. This review, as part of a 3-year study on the social understanding of dolphin cognition, sought to redress this research deficit by characterizing the themes used to portray dolphins in popular media. The research was intended to aid dolphin researchers and exhibit designers in the framing of their scientific presenta- tions within the public discourse. Background This research was motivated by public reaction to scientific findings from a research project at the New York Aquarium that unequivocally demonstrated the self-awareness and complex cognitive capacities of dolphins previously known only to exist in humans and great apes (Reiss & Marino, 2001).     The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape,digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. By looking at the production process of local drama television programming, this study examines the interactions among the three major players – the Barisan Nasional regime, the major television networks and independent producers – who are responsible for shaping its content. Three research methods are used for this study: in-depth interviewing, the informal conversational interview and documentary research. Between June 2001 and November 2002, 32 interviewees participated in this research. The research finds that the Malaysian drama television producer’s ability to generate program content is constrained by the Barisan Nasional regime. Three observations are made to outline the power relationship between the government and the television industry. First, the government often encourages television producers to make drama programs with the theme of friendship and goodwill (muhibah) among different ethnic communities in order to nurture racial harmony.

Abstract When it aired in Fall 2011 on Fox, Terra Nova was an experiment in creating a cult television program that appealed to a mass audience. This thesis is a case study of that experiment. I conclude that the show failed because of its attempts to maintain the sophistication, complexity and innovative nature of the cult genre while simultaneously employing an overly simplistic narrative structure that resembles that of mass audience programming. Terra Nova was unique in its transmedia approach to marketing and storytelling, its advanced special effects, and its dystopian speculative fiction premise. Terra Nova’s narrative, on the other hand, presented a nostalgically simple moralistic landscape that upheld old-fashioned ideologies and felt oddly retro to the modern SF TV audience. Terra Nova’s failure suggests that a cult show made for this type of broad audience is impossible.

    MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 • MICROSOFT THEATER MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN/CEO o say that television changed my life is not an exaggeration. In fact, it may be an understatement. This industry has allowed me to travel the world, meet extraordinary people, even win some awards — including seven Emmys. But without question, serving as Television Academy chairman was one of the high Tpoints of my career. It was a privilege to help guide this organization during a period of dynamic change, and I am proud of what our leadership accomplished during that time. Among my priorities as chairman was to increase diversity and inclusion in the television industry. The same is true of my work as a producer, which allows me to advocate in a more immediate and personal way for inclusion by creating opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to share their talents and advance their own careers. In this respect, as in many others, my personal values are in alignment with those of the Academy, and as I reflect on 2018, I am pleased to note the continuation of many positive steps within the Academy during the Emmy Awards’ 70th anniversary year. One example: When we heard from members and programmers that, with so many shows in the Emmy mix, they wanted additional FYC events to provide voters and creators more opportunities to engage prior to the balloting period, we increased the number of FYC events from sixty-one in 2017 to more than a hundred by opening up weekends and allowing more than one event on a single night.
