SCAM WARNING Asking for reward for return of missing person There are hundreds of thousands of missing persons in the United States. The most horrible feeling for a mother, child or sibling is to go month after month and year after year without knowing if their loved one is dead or alive. It isn’t bad enough the child or person is missing, now there are those who would make a business out of the family’s misery. The latest scam has someone call family members of a missing person to request the money offered as the reward for that person’s return. Either they themselves have taken the person for the money (kidnapping), or are now part of this evil and unconscionable scheme of collecting reward money based on a family’s misery. Those who indulge in that sort of scam are the lowest of the low, using the pain and suffering of family members for their own gain. Do not let such people get away with it. If it happens to you, call your local authorities immediately and notify the FBI agent handling your relative’s case. Asked about the president’s climate initiative last week, House Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio was also unyielding. “I think this is absolutely crazy,” Speaker Boehner told reporters. “Why would you want to increase the cost of energy and kill more American jobs at a time when the American people are still asking the question, ‘Where are the jobs?’” That “Where are the jobs?” refrain is a throwback to the speaker’s daily criticism of the president during the 2012 election campaign. Then, GOP contender Mitt Romney’s only concrete jobs proposal was to vastly expand fossil fuel production, and two of the right’s most well-worn talking points were the Obama administration’s “war on coal” and the bankruptcy of solar panel manufacturer Solyndra (a clear example of Obama’s “crony capitalism” at work). On energy, the election did little to budge the two sides on Capitol Hill. Then as now, congressional Republicans faced a president who far outstrips them in public approval polls and has a particular edge when voters are asked who cares about them more. In that context, Republicans see energy as a way of connecting with ordinary Ameri- cans on pocketbook issues like jobs and utility costs. Maybe the effects lin- ger on in some way to this day, but virtually no one would know about the ramifications of that event if I didn’t tell them. And when I was a young mother, wanting to have more children, I was never told that I should consider not having more children. I already had a daughter, and since I wouldn’t have minded having another girl, and she always wanted a sister, that was soon to be. After my second little girl was born, we told our daughter over the phone that she finally had a sister. She was so happy. But then that ever-present element of change that pops into our life — sometimes when we least expect it — popped up again. “Theresa” needed a complete blood transfusion. She did not even live two full days. The good news is that I have four living children. Four other children did not make it, but the four I do have are very delightful and healthy children. My only daughter is celebrating her birthday this week, and although unplanned, she got to celebrate it with me, thanks to the person who “screwed up” that car part overnight delivery. So as we go through the years and things happen, we have to remem- ber that none of us are exempt from that. Some of those things will be small on the scale of life, and some not so small. But we’re all in for such surprises — some of which will be happy and some not — yet all of which can cause us changes for which we’re probably not ready. In the end, what else can we do but say, “Stuff happens. It’s called Life.” Maramis Choufani is the Managing Editor of the Las Vegas Tribune. She writes a weekly column in this newspaper.
