White South Africans used both popular media and official rhetoric to portray Coloured men as lazy, cowardly, drunkards, and absentee fathers. In response, Coloured men developed a discourse that lionized loyalty, bravery, athleticism, morality, and respectability. Many Coloured men disputed the acceptability of those who they thought threatened their status as masculine and respectable citizens. Gay and transgender men, or moffies, were the center of one such debate during the 1940s and 1950s, while Coloured skolly gangsters drew public ire beginning in the 1930s. I frame my analyses of this discourse around the concepts of hegemonic and subordinated masculinities to demonstrate the ways in which ideals and practices of masculinities often overlapped, reinforced, and challenged one another on local and global scales. Drawing on archival research conducted in Cape Town in 2011 and 2013-14, this project contends that South African gendered identities emphasized inclusivity and cosmopolitanism that contradicted the exclusive and divisive racial identities promoted under White supremacism. ii Acknowledgements I cannot take sole credit for this project as countless people have made their marks along the way. They made my work in Cape Town enjoyable on a daily basis. A portion of Chapter Three was presented at the 2014 “Sports in a Africa and the Global South” conference at Ohio University. Chapter Five was first shared with the participants at the Fall 2014 North Eastern Workshop on Southern Africa. And finally, Chapter Four found a venue at the 2015 African Studies Association Annual Meeting in Indianapolis. According to one joke, the Dutch commander Jan van Riebeeck landed at Table Bay in 1652, and the Coloured people were born nine months later. The punch line of the joke lays the onus for creation of the racially anomalous Coloured at the feet of lonely White sailors who could not contain themselves at the sight of indigenous women, presumed barriers of race be damned. Of course not all Western Cape activists or trade unionists are combative, or display critically enquiring minds. Nor are these qualities always an indisputable 'good'. Sufficiently remarkable that it ought to be written about. The reasons for this distinctive character are of course complex and varied. Amongst these the political style and traditions established by the Non-European Unity Movement which grew out of the Anti-Coloured Affairs Department (Anti- CAD) campaign of the early 1940s must be included. It must be stressed that this is not the only, or even most significant political movement in the Western Cape; nor does it account for traditions that may have developed in the African townships.

    From War to Workplace: Class, Race and Gender amongst White Volunteers, 1939-1953 By Neil Roos Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History in the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at the University of North West Supervisor: Dr. Tim Clynick Mafikeng, North West Province August 2001 To Dick Abstract Through a case study of the war and post-war experiences of those who volunteered to serve in the Second World War, the thesis explores aspects of the social and cultural history of white men in South Africa. The thesis begins from the premise that class and ethnicity, the major binary categories conventionally used to explain developments in white South African society, are unable to account for the history of white men who volunteered to serve in the Second World War. It argues that the history of these volunteers is best understood in the context of racist culture, which can be defined as an evolving consensus amongst whites in South Africa on the political, social and cultural primacy of whiteness. It argues that, when the call to arms came in 1939, it was answered mainly by white men from those little traditions incorporated politically into the segregationist colonial order, largely through the explicit emphases of white privilege and the cultural hegemony of whiteness. Their decision to enlist was underscored by an awareness that volunteering entailed a set of rights and duties, which centred on their expectations of post-war "social justice." Chapter three examines some of the highly idealised and implicitly racialised ways in which, during wartime, white troops expanded their understanding of social justice.

Critics and intellectuals, mainly from out­ side Africa, formerly feared that the oppressive restriction of apart­ heid would kill creativity; more recently they have been afraid that its demise, with the collapse of that totalitarian system encompassing all fields, social, political, and cultural, would have the same result. How can South African literature survive? Where can it find new life and sustenance? I wish I could make a definite reply to these obsessive ques­ tions: magical realism, a major component of postmodernist fiction and an important feature of post-colonial writing, is also a well established literary practice in post-apartheid literature.
