for a kid from rural Minnesota to feel connected to the larger theater world. Before leaving I asked Mr. Guare to please sign my copy. On the title page he wrote, “To Peter Rothstein at the start of a wonderful career.” He then drew a line from my name to where his name was printed and crossed out the word Six.

I have wanted to direct this play for 26 years. My respect for it has only increased with life experience. I believe it is one of the truly great contemporary American dramas. At its best, theater is about our global connectedness. It encourages us to recognize our link to the rest of the world, not just our personal or professional networks, but a call to arms asking us to draw a line to every single person living on this planet. As Ouisa states, “I am bound to every person on this planet by a trail of six people. It’s a profound thought.”

Christopher Schout and Wayne Zink I brought my copy of the Six Degrees of Separation script to the meeting with me. It was a hard copy I acquired from the Fireside Theater Book Club.
