The notion of Φ-centrality arises by uniting the concept of an E-group with the generalized central series of Kaloujnine. An E-group is defined as a finite group G such that Φ(N) ^ Φ(G) for each subgroup N ^ G. Jones, Part 1 of 2 ) 1—14, 2012 The Work of Tom Farrell and Lowell Jones in Topology and Geometry James F. Davis∗ Tom Farrell and Lowell Jones caused a paradigm shift in high-dimensional topology, away from the view that high-dimensional topology was, at its core, an algebraic subject, to the current view that geometry, dynamics, and analysis, as well as algebra, are key for classifying manifolds whose fundamental group is infinite. Their collaboration produced about fifty papers over a twenty-five year period. In this tribute for the special issue of Pure and Applied Mathematics Quarterly in their honor, I will survey some of the impact of their joint work and mention briefly their individual contributions – they have written about one hundred non-joint papers. 1 Setting the stage arXiv:1006.1489v2 [math.GT] 8 Aug 2010 In order to indicate the Farrell–Jones shift, it is necessary to describe the situation before the onset of their collaboration. My favourite book “Abstract Harmonic Analysis” [1] by Ed Hewitt and Ken Ross contains both a proof of the Pontryagin-van Kampen Duality Theorem for locally compact abelian groups and the structure theory of locally compact abelian groups. Walter Rudin’s book “Fourier Analysis on Groups” [2] includes an elegant proof of the Pontryagin-van Kampen Duality Theorem. Much gentler than these is “Introduction to Topological Groups” [3] by Taqdir Husain which has an introduction to topological group theory, Haar measure, the Peter-Weyl Theorem and Duality Theory. Of course the book “Topological Groups” [4] by Lev Semyonovich Pontryagin himself was a tour de force for its time. P. S. Aleksandrov, V.G. Boltyanskii, R.V. Gamkrelidze and E.F. Mishchenko described this book in glowing terms: “This book belongs to that rare category of mathematical works that can truly be called classical - books which retain their significance for decades and exert a formative influence on the scientific outlook of whole generations of mathematicians”. The final book I mention from my graduate studies days is “Topological Transformation Groups” [5] by Deane Montgomery and Leo Zippin which contains a solution of Hilbert’s fifth problem as well as a structure theory for locally compact non-abelian groups. -

Math Object Identifiers – Towards Research Data in Mathematics Michael Kohlhase Computer Science, FAU Erlangen-N¨urnberg Abstract. We propose to develop a system of “Math Object Identi- fiers” (MOIs: digital object identifiers for mathematical concepts, ob- jects, and models) and a process of registering them. These envisioned MOIs constitute a very lightweight form of semantic annotation that can support many knowledge-based workflows in mathematics, e.g. clas- sification of articles via the objects mentioned or object-based search. In essence MOIs are an enabling technology for Linked Open Data for mathematics and thus makes (parts of) the mathematical literature into mathematical research data. 1 Introduction The last years have seen a surge in interest in scaling computer support in scientific research by preserving, making accessible, and managing research data. For most subjects, research data consist in measurement or simulation data about the objects of study, ranging from subatomic particles via weather systems to galaxy clusters. Mathematics has largely been left untouched by this trend, since the objects of study – mathematical concepts, objects, and models – are by and large ab- stract and their properties and relations apply whole classes of objects. There are some exceptions to this, concrete integer sequences, finite groups, or ℓ-functions and modular form are collected and catalogued in mathematical data bases like the OEIS (Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences) [Inc; Slo12], the GAP Group libraries [GAP, Chap. 50], or the LMFDB (ℓ-Functions and Modular Forms Data Base) [LMFDB; Cre16]. Abstract mathematical structures like groups, manifolds, or probability dis- tributions can formalized – usually by definitions – in logical systems, and their relations expressed in form of theorems which can be proved in the logical sys- tems as well. -

LINEAR ALGEBRA MATH 2700.006 SPRING 2013 (COHEN) LECTURE NOTES 1 Sets and Set Notation. Definition 1 (Naive Definition of a Set). A set is any collection of objects, called the elements of that set. We will most often name sets using capital letters, like A, B, X, Y , etc., while the elements of a set will usually be given lower-case letters, like x, y, z, v, etc. Two sets X and Y are called equal if X and Y consist of exactly the same elements. In this case we write X = Y . Example 1 (Examples of Sets). (1) Let X be the collection of all integers greater than or equal to 5 and strictly less than 10. Then X is a set, and we may write: X = f5; 6; 7; 8; 9g The above notation is an example of a set being described explicitly, i.e. just by listing out all of its elements. The set brackets {· · ·} indicate that we are talking about a set and not a number, sequence, or other mathematical object. (2) Let E be the set of all even natural numbers. We may write: E = f0; 2; 4; 6; 8; :::g This is an example of an explicity described set with infinitely many elements. The ellipsis (:::) in the above notation is used somewhat informally, but in this case its meaning, that we should \continue counting forever," is clear from the context. Because few people seem to be aware of quasi p-groups, we will begin with a bit of history and a definition; and then we will determine for each group of order less than 24 (and a few others) whether the group is a quasi p-group for some prime p or not. This paper is a prequel to [Hwd]. In [Hwd] we prove that (Z3 £Z3)oZ2 and Z5 o Z4 are quasi 2-groups. Those proofs now form a portion of Proposition (12.1) It should also be noted that [Hwd] may also be found in this journal. Section One: Why should we be interested in quasi p-groups? In a 1957 paper titled Coverings of algebraic curves [Abh2], Abhyankar conjectured that the algebraic fundamental group of the affine line over an algebraically closed field k of prime characteristic p is the set of quasi p-groups, where by the algebraic fundamental group of the affine line he meant the family of all Galois groups Gal(L=k(X)) as L varies over all finite normal extensions of k(X) the function field of the affine line such that no point of the line is ramified in L, and where by a quasi p-group he meant a finite group that is generated by all of its p-Sylow subgroups. -

In the situations, students in a preservice teacher training course dealt with such concepts, together with card-puzzle problems of a type. And there, we aimed to accompany these concepts with their raisons d’être. Such raisons d’être are substantiated by the dialectic between tasks and techniques in the praxeological perspective of the anthropological theory of the didactic. -
Group Theory
Group theory March 7, 2016 Nearly all of the central symmetries of modern physics are group symmetries, for simple a reason. If we imagine a transformation of our fields or coordinates, we can look at linear versions of those transformations. Such linear transformations may be represented by matrices, and therefore (as we shall see) even finite transformations may be given a matrix representation. But matrix multiplication has an important property: associativity. We get a group if we couple this property with three further simple observations: (1) we expect two transformations to combine in such a way as to give another allowed transformation, (2) the identity may always be regarded as a null transformation, and (3) any transformation that we can do we can also undo. These four properties (associativity, closure, identity, and inverses) are the defining properties of a group. 1 Finite groups Define: A group is a pair G = fS; ◦} where S is a set and ◦ is an operation mapping pairs of elements in S to elements in S (i.e., ◦ : S × S !
