Miracles by Joe Sixpack Miracle: a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency (Webster’s). Miracle: A sensibly perceptible effect, surpassing at least the powers of visible nature, produced by God to Witness to some truth or testify to someone’s sanctity (Modern Catholic Dictionary). Ours is a very cynical world. Because we live in a post-Christian era where God is not only no longer believed in but actually mocked, miracles are seen as phenomena that can’t be explained only because we lack the technology to fully understand certain laws of nature. This cynicism has effected the Christian world as well. Even among our separated Protestant brethren I’ve heard it said we are beyond the age of miracles—that miracles no longer take place. Baloney! Miracles take place every single day throughout the world. Some of those miracles are working in a perpetual state, some for the entire two-thousand year existence of the Church. Fact of the matter is, the majority of miracles taking place around the globe happen only in the Roman Catholic Church. Take the incorruptibility of some of the saints for example. From St. Cecilia (d. AD 177) to Padre Pio (d. 1968), we have almost 2,000 years worth of ongoing miracles. Here are just a few of the more than one hundred: St. Catherine Laboure (of the Miraculous Medal) died on December 31, 1876. When her body was exhumed 56 years later it was unblemished.

It happened quite often, however, that apparitions were accompanied by “miracles of the sun”. • In Fatima on the 8Th Day of the Novena
The Message of Fatima 100th Anniversary – 2017 1914-Apparition At 7 years old I (Lucia) began tending our flock of sheep. One day as we (Lucia & some friends) saw for the 1st time a figure that had a human shape, whiter than snow and which the sun turned transparent. This apparition recurred twice again without manifesting itself and always suspended in the air, over the wood at the bottom of the “Cabezo.” When questioned by her mother, “As I did not know how to explain clearly and to free myself from questions, I replied that it looked like someone wrapped in a very white sheet.” 1st 1916 Apparition of the Angel After quickly praying the rosary Lucia dos Santos with cousins Francisco & Jacinta Marto started to play a game. “We were feeding our flocks in a property belonging to my parents called “Chousa Velha,” which lies at the bottom of a hill called “Cabezo,” on the east side. It was there that the Angel appeared to us for the 1st time in the form of a youth, as white as snow, shining more brightly then the sun and as transparent as crystal. We began to see this light coming towards us and thus we gradually distinguished the features. We were taken by surprise and being half bewildered we did not say a word. On reaching us he said, “Don’t be afraid. I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me!” And kneeling down, he bowed his forehead to the ground and made us repeat these words three times: My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee! I beg pardon of You for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You.” “Pray thus.

Fatima Centennial The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared six times to three shepherd children near the town of Fati- ma, Portugal between May 13 and October 13, 1917. She promised that Heaven would grant peace to all the world if the requests for pray- er, reparation and consecration were heard and obeyed. The Blessed Mother repeatedly emphasized the necessity of praying the Ro- sary daily, of wearing the Brown Scapular of Mount Carmel and of performing acts of repa- ration and sacrifice. She also asked that the Faithful practice a devotion of reparation on the first Saturday of five consecutive months (receive Holy Communion, go to confession, recite the rosary, and keep Mary company for 15 minutes while meditating on the rosary). My Pilgrimage to Fatima On May 4th we flew to Lisbon and from there took a bus to Fatima. Fatima is one of the major shrines of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On May 13, 1917 the Blessed Mother appeared to three shepherd children: Lucia Santos, her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto, while they were herding sheep at Cova da Ira in the village of Fatima. Children saw a lady brighter than the sun. Blessed Mother asked the children to dedicate themselves to the Holy Trinity and pray the Rosary for conversion of souls and peace in the world. 1917 was a historic year; first World war was barely over. Through the children the Blessed Mother warned the world of a greater threat that of militant atheistic communism that would eventually engulf Russia and Eastern Europe and other parts of the world and the dangers of more wars to follow [II World War]. The Blessed Mother wanted Russia to be consecrated to her immaculate heart. Fatima became a popular pilgrim destination after the miracle of the sun on October 13, 1917. Our Lady promised a miracle to happen that day. About seventy thousand people gathered at the site of the appearance both believers and non-believers. On that rainy day when clouds slowly faded away, people saw the sun changing its colors and rotate like a wheel [called the dance of the sun]. It was visible up to 20 miles away. Nobody expected such a miracle to happen that day. Even the non-believers admitted that something happened in Fatima that day.

REFLECTIONS ON GRACE A HISTORY OF GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH CARLISLE, PENNSYLVANIA JAMES B. ESHELMAN 1 © James B. Eshelman 2007 2 INTRODUCTION istory is never best told by men. We do not see events fully as HGod sees them. Nor can we be certain that the most crucial contributors to those events have not been overlooked. There is a dark side to history which is better left untold. All the members of our church, including its leaders, “ . were once dark- ness” (Eph. 5:8). Scripture itself teaches us to be discreet. “It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret” (Eph. 5:12). If this darkness were fully recorded as God and the angels know it, then the grace and kindness of God toward such sinners would be the chief note of our account. Also we believe that the most amazing contributions to the work of God are unseen: Hours spent in the discipline of secret prayer; Lifelong application of God’s Word in family life; Patient catechiz- ing of children; Acts of charity, hospitality and sacrifice never mentioned; Witnessing and suffering for Jesus’ sake; Heart engage- ment in loving worship of God which is not measured by public appearances. The widow’s “very small copper coins” (Mark 12:42) mean more than the millionaire’s tithe. Only the Lord knows the heart that is most aglow with love for Him. Human history tends to shine the spotlight on generals, while within the ranks of their armies are countless heroes. It is not always the strategy of leaders but the grit and character of those who execute the plan which wins the day.
