Captain Jason Toole

Captain Jason Toole joins us from Purdue University where he recently completed a Master of Science in Sociology. Prior to graduate school, he commanded a light engineer company in 3rd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division in Paktya province Afghanistan and Fort Drum, New York. A sociology undergraduate student at Ohio University, he completed the ROTC program as a Distinguished Military Graduate and was commissioned as an Engineer Officer.

Today we hear the importance of the human element in our current counter insurgency operations. As a student of sociology I feel this is second nature when our discipline trains us to examine and explore the groups and processes that shape our everyday lives. Regardless of our areas of military expertise, the Army provides us with the skills and references to accomplish these specialty tasks. Much rarer, and infinitely more difficult to develop, is a fundamental understanding of the social currents that affect us and our adversaries alike.

Sociology provides an academic portal that lets us view the world from a disciplined perspective. The obvious is not always so. As a gateway discipline, the historical, contemporary, economic, political and cultural all fall within our pur- view. Regardless of our branch of service, there are few undertakings that can prove as valuable, universal or applicable to our current struggles home and abroad.

The amassed body of sociological theory and commentary provides limitless potential for the attuned warrior to mine. This has nothing to do with ivory towers or dusty academe, but everything to do with diverse all volunteer units, families, military culture and tribal councils, enduring cultures, insurgent [social] networks and so much more. In terms of utility, grab your sociological leatherman, I know it will also serve you well.

I am very excited to join the team and greatly look forward to sharing my experiences while learning. Go Army! Volume 2, Issue 1 Page 12 ARMY Sociology Faculty Research Carlton-Ford, Steve, Morten G.
