INTRODUCTION The reactivity of polyenes is influenced by their substituents, and whether or not the multiple double bonds of the unsaturated hydrocarbon are conjugated or isolated from 693 694 Nanette Wachter-Jurcsak and Kimberly A. The -system of a polyene may be fully conjugated, or there may be one or more pairs of conjugated double bonds isolated from the other -bonds in the molecule, or, alternatively, each of the carbon–carbon double bonds in the polyene may be isolated from one another. Conjugated -systems react differently with electrophiles than isolated double bonds. Addition of hydrogen to isolated double bonds has been previously discussed in this series and will not be addressed here1.
