Battle of the Insurance Bands Began with the Insurance Institute in Vancouver a Few Years Ago Another year…. Another three great bands…. Another 230 satisfied music fans…. and Another $3600 donated to charities! Take a look at photos from #boibSA Battle of the Insurance Bands began with the Insurance Institute in Vancouver a few years ago. Since then, Institutes across Canada have joined the party and our best guess is that over $70,000 has been raised for charities across the country! For us here in Southern Alberta, Thursday May 21, 2015 was our third #boibSA. This year’s venue was the Atlantic Trap & Gill known for its live music! We hosted over 230 music lovers who packed the dance floor for all three of the bands! For the competition component of the event, each band had to play one specific “Battle Song”. With the three bands all being of the rocker genre, they were assigned the task of playing the super cotton candy & bubble gum tune Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen as the battle song! In addition to the great live music, we also had some fab Silent Auction items including concert tickets to Ed Sheeran, Mumford & Sons, and Paul Brandt/Dean Brody. There was wine, a Timmies brewer, gift certificates, and other great deals! Our Rock n’ Roll Gold corporate sponsors also most certainly helped to make the night a success! Take a look here to see all of the great people that helped to make this event great! #boibSA May 21, 2015 Headcase was the first to take the stage. It’s all about the fun for this humble rock cover band and nothing is sacred when it comes to Rock & Roll! These "mature" musicians took the stage to tell us "If it’s too loud then you’re too old!!" They warned us to prepare to call in sick the next day cuz we’d be partying like rock stars at #boibSA! True story! With Linda Smith from Braeside Insurance playing the drums, these rockers did the Battle Song, Call Me Maybe, à la Blondie and rocked it! We heard other classics like Summer of 69, Kryptonite, and Rockin’ in the Free World. Playing their hearts out for Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse, their charity will receive $1,200! Teeny tiny little Linda Smith from Braeside Insurance The Headcase Crew Claire Taylor, Barry Lamming, Ian Moir, Linda Smith Next on stage was Wood Frame Construction. With a little bit of duct tape here & there and a whoooole lot of enthusiasm for playing great music, Wood Frame is a "throwtogetherband" to the max! Recipe: grab a client, grab a friend, make a band! Mission accomplished. The mission at #boibSA: rock the stage! Done! With tunes like New Orleans is Sinking, Highway to Hell, and a really cool “sorta ska” version of the Battle Song, Call Me Maybe, WFC did not disappoint! With the insurance connection of Devon Jacobs & Adam Thomson from Toole Peet Insurance they played to bring home the $$ for the Seniors Secret Service… another $1,200 is on its way! From Toole Peet Insurance: Devon Jacobs & Adam Thomson Along with Paul Unruh David Esch Charlene Francis Ummmmm? We don’t know… David? Orange Whip finished the night with a bang (and some bagpipers). Born out of wedlock and forged in the bowels of H-E- double-hockey-sticks this old school rock and roll band is like nothing you have ever seen before or likely ever will again (except hopefully next year at #boibSA 2016!). More guitar... more bass... more drum! As returning champs from #boibSA 2014, they held on to the title for 2015 with their rocking version of the Battle Song, Call Me Maybe. They also nailed it with Sweet Home Alabama, Home for a Rest, and 500 Miles. With the insurance connection of Lewis Moorman, Patrick Garuk, and bagpipe cameo by Craig Mackay, all from SCM Risk Management Services, the $1200 cheque is in the mail to Muscular Dystrophy Canada.     PAUL BRANDT BIOGRAPHY Paul Brandt is the most awarded male Canadian Country Music artist in history. Since his million-selling debut album “Calm Before The Storm”, his has been an unlikely journey of humble beginnings and big dreams to fame and stardom. It is an engaging story of a young man who followed his passion to make a difference in the lives of others using his musical ability. It has been a twisting road that has given him an audience with music legends, global leaders, royalty, and placed him on the world’s largest stages. A former pediatric registered nurse, Brandt had a passion for words and poetry early in life, and began to write music at the age of 13. Greatly inspired by both the Gospel music he heard at the church his family attended, and by the Western heritage, tradition, and culture of 1980s Alberta, the music that he created immediately skewed towards a Singer/Songwriter style, and towards Country Music. For as long as he can remember, Paul loved to sing and write poetry and music. He also had the goal of one day becoming a doctor. While reaching for his medical dreams during his college years, he started entering and winning talent competitions, one of which was the Youth Talent Showdown at the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. Brandt credits these contests as events that altered the course of his life. Label executives began to take notice, and by the age of 21, Brandt had been signed to a seven-album deal with Warner/Reprise Records Nashville, alongside label-mates Faith Hill, Randy Travis, and more.
