He was inducted into JEFFERY COPOLOV Prior to joining Bates Smart: the Design Institute of Australia’s Hall of DipIntDes, FDIA / ABC Channel 2, Melbourne Fame in 2018, in recognition of outstanding Director / GTV Channel 9, Melbourne contributions to the Australian design industry. Jeff has a classically modern, timeless approach to design and a reputation for producing highly refined and carefully targeted design solutions. He is known for his relentless attention to detail. Regularly working with architectural colleagues from the outset, Jeff oversees the entire design process to craft buildings from the inside out. His broad experience covers a wide range of building types, including commercial, hospitality, residential, retail, education and health, all of which promotes a rich diversity of cross-discipline thought. -

Newsletter No 29 – Winter & Spring 2012 PO Box 1080, Windsor VIC 3181 Australia ISSN 1835-5242 NEWS HEADLINES WE WELCOME DELEGATES TO THE JOINT MECHANICS’ WORLDWIDE 2012 CONFERENCE BUILDINGS, BOOKS AND BLACKBOARDS 27 November-1 December 2012 MEETING OUR MINISTER On 17 October a meeting is planned at the Maldon Athenaeum with the Minister for Local Government, the Hon. Jeanette Powell MLA. It has been six years since we last met our Minister in the same place. In 2004 Minister Powell opened the vastly remodelled Shepparton Mechanics’ Institute and last June unveiled their $700,000 extensions. Born in Prescot, Lancashire, UK, which also had an interesting early Mechanics’ Institute, Minister Powell arrived in Victoria with her parents in 1958. The family then settled in Shepparton and was educated at the Shepparton Girls’ Secondary College. Gaining Local Government experience with the Shepparton Shire as a Councillor and President, she was then appointed a Campaspe Shire Commissioner The Official Opening of the newly renovated Shepparton in the Local Government restructure. Entering Mechanics’ Institute, Member for Shepparton, Jeanette Parliament became her next career move and she was Powell (left) with Trustee of the Shepparton Mechanics’ elected as Member for the North Eastern Province in Institute, Lance Woodhouse and Shepparton Access the Legislative Council in 1996 and moved to a Lower CEO, Wendy Shanks. LANEWAYS IN DANGER THE NEED FOR NEW POLICIES AND DIRECTIONS TO PROPERLY PROTECT MELBOURNE’S CITY LANEWAYS ACDC Lane - Iconic wall demolished This old brick wall and its art at the rear of 108 Flinders Street is now gone, demol- ished in 2012 for an apartment develop- ment. June 2012 Preamble This report provides an account of the current state of laneway preservation and management in Melbourne’s CBD. It is Melbourne Heritage Actions assertion that the current CBD lanes policy is appallingly out of date and does not take into account the rich diversification of uses currently seen in laneways over the last 15 years. This report will also give an account of the current threats to lanes, how they can be better managed and where the most important existing laneways are which are currently unprotected. Melbourne Heritage Action have also produced a policy steering document which is intended to provide a detailed indication as to how our laneways should be managed and protected. A major photographic assessment of the CBDs existing laneways undertaken by Melbourne Heritage Action member Tristan Davies, has also been included as an appendix and is designed to provide the reader with an overview of the kind of unique and vibrant places the current policy fails to protect. Presgraves Place In a heritage precinct, but it’s laneway buildings current have the lowest amount of protection (D- grading) The lane itself is also Class 3, the lowest level in current policy, despite a cafe, shops and art lining the lane, and it’s multiple daytime through- block access via the Capital Theatre Arcade and Howey Place. -
