Dr Ooi Teik Aun is the Founder Chairman of the IEM Tunnelling and Underground Space Technical Division and an Organizing Chairman of the International Conference & Exhibition 2015 (ICETUS2015. He is also the current Chairman of Dispute Resolution Practice (DRP) Subcommittee. He is an Advisor for Consulting Engineering Special Interest Group (CESIG). Ir. Dr Ooi is an Honorary Fellow of IEM, Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Arbitrators and Past President and is ICE Country Representative for Malaysia. But with the rapid development of tunnelling and ground formed at the seminar and inaugurated in 2001 with the improvement technologies in the last 30 years, this is set objective to undertake activities related to the promotion to change, especially with the active participation of and advancement of the science and engineering the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) and the of tunnels and underground space technologies. -
Service Disruption on Mrt Kajang Line Due to Signalling Problems
MEDIA STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SERVICE DISRUPTION ON MRT KAJANG LINE DUE TO SIGNALLING PROBLEMS KUALA LUMPUR, 16 August 2021- MRT Kajang Line is experiencing a service disruption due to signalling problems that were detected at 9.15am today that caused all trains that were in operations along the MRT Kajang Line to be held at platforms along its entire alignment starting from MRT Sungai Buloh Station to MRT Kajang Station. “The signalling problems are believed due to a technical issue and Rapid KL’s Engineering Department, together with BT Alstom who is the system’s manufacturer and Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), are working to resolve this so that MRT Kajang Line could operate normally as soon as possible,” said a statement issued by the rail operator today. When the signalling problems were detected, all trains that were in operations switched to manual mode and were driven by Transit Officers to the nearest station, at a speed of not more than 25km/hour. Passengers were advised to disembark and take alternative transport in order to continue with their journey. Then, MRT Kajang Line suspended its operations from 11.15am to 3.45pm to allow for diagnostic work and full system reboot to be performed. It has since resumed operations at 3.45pm in revised service mode. “We deeply regret the inconvenience and would like to apologise to our passengers for this service disruption. For the safety of all involved, MRT Kajang Line is currently operating on revised service mode where trains would be moving slower and dwelling at platforms longer,” it added. -

In Malaysia, the problem issues are related to traffic congestion and many user cars on the roadway in daily lives. One alternative mode of using a rail network is commuter, LRT, Monorail, MRT and ETS. Therefore, the Geographic Information System (GIS) technology is then used to map and produce the railway networks history and developments in urban public transportation (UPT). The goal of this research is to identify the heatmap trends of the Klang Valley railway stations which included Kuala Lumpur as urban public transport sectors. It was based on the OSM image layer from the year 1990 to 2019 and studied the growth of railway networks through a polyline pattern analysis. -

FEATURE Pipe Roofing Installation by Micro Tunneling Method Mr. Ivan Leong ABSTRACT This article described the process of installing the pipe rooing structure for Maluri underground KVMRT station Entrance A. The pipe roof was constructed using 780mm diameter steel pipes of 10mm thickness, installed via pipe jacking method using a Micro Tunnel Boring Machine (MTBM). The use of a separation plant for slurry treatment was suitable, given the site conditions and greatly improved productivity of the pipe jacking machine in the silty ground condition. The journal described why a pipe roof structure was needed and how it was constructed. ABSTRACT Kuala Lumpur Limestone formation exhibits karstic features with irregular bedrock profiles and variable weathering condition. The Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) SBK Line project is the first Mass Rapid Transit project in Malaysia. There are three underground stations namely Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) station, Cochrane Station and Maluri Station located in Kuala Lumpur limestone formation. TRX Station is the deepest station with maximum excavation depth of 45m below ground and also one of the underground interchange stations for future line. Cochrane Station with maximum excavation depth of 32m below ground also serves as launching shaft for the tunnel boring machine from both ends of the station. Maluri Station with maximum excavation depth of 20m below ground includes an underground train crossover as operational requirement. A technically appropriate and cost effective temporary earth retaining system suitable for the challenging geological formation using secant pile wall supported by temporary ground anchors or temporary strutting was adopted. -

The KVMRT Project when completed will cover a distance of 51km and comprises of 31 passenger stations. This paper covers the challenges in design and construction of deep excavation works for three underground stations, namely Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) station, Cochrane Station and Maluri Station, as well as one portal (South Portal) all located in Kuala Lumpur limestone formation. The Kuala Lumpur Limestone formation exhibits notorious karstic features with irregular bedrock profiles, variable weathering condition, cavities and slime zones. This paper presents the design principles of temporary earth retaining system together with vertical rock excavation to the final depth of the station in karstic limestone formation. The unique experience (design and construction) gained from this project will be a useful reference for similar excavation works, especially in karstic limestone formation.
