ADJUDICATOR Barbara Long, Junior Piano Barbara was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario where she studied piano. She returned to musical studies as a young mom studying in Fredericton, New Brunswick, earning her ARCT Teachers Degree. Barbara and her husband live on the family farm near Hartland, New Brunswick where she has operated a private piano studio for over 30 years. Barbara is Past President of the NB Registered Music Teachers’ Association and a member the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators’ Association. She has been the Provincial Administrator of the New Brunswick Federation of Music Festivals since 2002 and the Executive Director of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals since 2016. Barbara's students have been consistent winners of prizes at the Carleton County Music Festival. Several have earned scholarships to study music at universities. Many others are involved in the musical life of their churches and communities. Barbara continues to mentor other teachers and enjoys adjudicating at festivals. In 2009, the Canadian Music Teachers’ Association honored her with the Hugheen Ferguson Distinguished Teacher Award in recognition of outstanding contribution to music education in Canada. Festival Program 2021 ADJUDICATOR Dr. Heather Price, Intermediate Piano Dr. Heather Price has been actively involved in Nova Scotia’s music scene as teacher, adjudicator, accompanist and music therapist for over twenty- five years. Completing graduate degrees in music performance at the University of Toronto, the Hochshűle fur Műsik in Vienna, and the University of Iowa, Heather pursued a teaching career at the University of Eastern Oregon in the 1980’s and early 90’s, during which time she performed regionally as a recitalist, chamber musician, accompanist, and orchestral soloist. In early 2000’s Heather completed her studies in music therapy, and joined the faculty at the School of Music, Acadia University, teaching courses in music therapy and keyboard improvisation. As a music therapist, Heather emphasizes the process of music-making as a creative and holistic activity. Through improvisation and the experience of music as an in-the- moment form of self-expression, Heather encourages a greater dimension of self- awareness and communication, attributes that should be the hallmark of any musical performance! Festival Program 2021 ADJUDICATOR Dr. David Rogosin, Senior Piano Pianist David Rogosin has performed across Canada, in the American Midwest, the Caribbean and France. Praised for the brilliance, clarity and passion of his performances, he is highly regarded as a performer, adjudicator and clinician. Aside from solo recitals, Rogosin is a frequent collaborator and chamber player with a particular passion for the two-piano repertoire. He has released two solo recordings: Incandescence (2005) and Evocation (2012), the latter nominated for an ECMA “Classical Recording of the Year” award. A third, Variations, will be recorded in the summer of 2021. Professor at Mount Allison University since 2001, he was awarded that institution’s Paul Paré Excellence Award in 2013, and in March, 2019 he was named to the prestigious position of Pickard-Bell Memorial Chair in Music for a five-year tenure. In April, Dr. Rogosin served as one of three jurors for the 42nd Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition in Brandon, MB. Apart from classical music, Rogosin enjoys jazz, world music, cooking and woodworking, and holds the rank of shodan in aikido. Festival Program 2021 ADJUDICATOR Marc Djokic, Upper Strings Marc Djokic is a Canadian violinist and concertmaster of the Orchestre Classique de Montreal. Winner of a 2020 East Music Award for Classical Recording of the Year, he is also a CQM Prix Opus laureate and former Canada Council for the Arts Instrument Bank recipient. Djokic’s debut album “Solo Seven” as well as his newest collaborative album “André Mathieu – musique de chambre” were both released to critical acclaim. He recently embarked on concert tours in Switzerland, Italy and France. Originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Djokic first and foremost studied with his father Philippe Djokic, one of Canada’s great soloists and a pupil of the master Ivan Galamian. He continued his studies in the USA with David Russell, Donald Weilerstein and Jaime Laredo. From BC Contact to Jeunesses Musicales and Debut Atlantic, Djokic has toured several times throughout Canada as an accomplished chamber musician. As a soloist, he has performed with such prestigious orchestras as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Quebec Symphony Orchestra. Festival Program 2021 ADJUDICATOR Emily Kennedy, Lower Strings Emily Kennedy is a cellist and educator based in Fredericton, New Brunswick. She frequently performs with the Elm City String Quartet, guitarist Steven Peacock, Symphony New Brunswick, Atlantic Sinfonia, and as a part of UNB's music UNB Performance Series. Outside of the classical music world, Emily is active in genre-crossing projects, collaborating with poets, textile artists, and dancers. Her interest in performing and writing new music has brought her to Banff’s Concert in the 21st Century residency, the Britten-Pears: Composition, Alternative Performance and Performance Art program in Aldeburgh, UK, Montreal Contemporary Music Lab, and RE:FLUX Festival in Moncton, NB with improv trio Terre Wa. Emily is a graduate of the performance program at the University of Ottawa and Wilfrid Laurier University. She has taught cello at Mount Allison University, and maintains a full private teaching studio in Fredericton. Festival Program 2021 ADJUDICATOR Dr. Ninette Babineau, Junior Strings Ninette Babineau is an arts education consultant and musician with degrees in education and performance from Hartt College (University of Hartford) and Boston University. A stringed instrument specialist, she has taught in private studio, schools and university programs in Canada and the U.S. After retiring from the position of Instrumental Consultant for the Halifax School Board and as instructor in Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Music, she held leadership roles on many regional, provincial and national boards and advisory groups, among them the National and Provincial Music Educators Associations, Coalition for Music Education in Canada, the provincial Department of Culture, Nova Scotia Arts Council, Canada Council, the Department of Canadian Heritage and Orchestras Canada. She is called upon as an adjudicator/assessor and consultant and continues to take an active role as Board Member for Scotia Festival and advisor for their Young Artist Program. Dr. Babineau has published internationally on the subject of education in and through the arts and has been the recipient of several national and institutional awards for her work in education. Festival Program 2021 ADJUDICATOR Anthony Rissesco, Fiddle and Traditional Music Anthony Rissesco is a contemporary violinist who performs folk, fiddle, rock, classical, and more. He grew up playing in the "down east old time tradition" and has competed in fiddling competitions across the country. He was a student of both Jan Wicha and Prof. Philippe Djokic, and has toured for many years with Lennie Gallant. Anthony appeared on Lennie's album Live Acoustic at the Carleton which received a Canadian Folk Music award, and he has been on many festival stages across the U.S with roots rock band, Pogey. He has also played and toured with many Maritime artists including Bruce Guthro and Anne Murray. Anthony has been a guest performer with Symphony Nova Scotia several times, either performing with Lennie Gallant or playing fiddle medleys and singing folk songs. He is part of the trio Papilio which has just released its second CD, and whose first CD was nominated for both an ECMA and Music Nova Scotia award. With almost 30 years’ experience as an educator, Anthony has given many workshops for fiddle organizations and clubs such as the Maritime Fiddle Association. He has often been a string and fiddle adjudicator for the Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festival and other music festivals. He is a first place prizewinner in five Canadian provinces and has represented Nova Scotia at the Canadian Grand Masters several times. Anthony is third prizewinner at the Canadian Open. He is also a past Maritime Fiddle champion and recently was a judge at that competition. Festival Program 2021 ADJUDICATOR Dr. Jack Brownell, Brass Jack Brownell grew up in Truro, NS, and upon completing his undergraduate degree at Acadia University spent two years playing with Symphony Nova Scotia. Following a residency at the Banff Centre School of Fine Arts, Jack was invited as a scholarship student by Daniel Perantoni to pursue graduate studies at Arizona State University where, as a Dean’s List student, he completed his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts (performance) work with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. While chamber music is his genre of choice, having long been involved in professional brass quintets in both Germany and the US, he has been found in Canadian, German, and American symphony orchestras and performing with touring Broadway productions. Following performance endeavours in Japan, the USA, and Europe, Jack returned to his native province where he currently combines professional performing with involvement in academia: he currently serves on the faculty of Dalhousie University, having also taught at Université de Moncton, Acadia, St. FX, and Arizona State universities.
